Have you ever wanted to just trash your Facebook account completely but found that it was so much easier to sign up rather than sign out? Well help is on the way in step-by-step directions to get your account completely removed once and for all.

Warning: If you’re dead set on deleting your Facebook profile, there is no turning back after 14 days.

I did this four years ago. It was still as difficult to do then (in terms of execution, not emotional trauma). I have never regretted it.

Facebook ruins lives. This world would be better off not knowing and life would be easier for everyone. Why is the divorce rate so high these days? Its not because more people fuck around on their spouse, its because their spouse publicized it on Facebook. The old cowboys didnt have this problem.

So don't cheat and your wife won't have anything to post about on that matter, lol.

Just make an account with a fake name. I've made heaps of friends joining a few groups on facebook about things I enjoy. It does occasionally have some upsides, even if people can't always see them.

I did that a few years ago and got kicked off for it. :(

But was the name obviously fake? They accept Smith as a last name, I just threw in a random guy's name just to make it sound legit. I think the idea of using your real name is ridiculous with Facebook and while they do attempt to enforce the rule, there's not much they can do if the names you use are real.

Facebook doesn't ruin lives, people ruin their own lives by being morons and publishing all the details about their personal lives, or trolling your "friends of friends" for hookups. Facebook doesn't force you to be a dishonest, unfaithful, douche bag. You do that on your own.

People need to take responsibility for their own actions, and stop trying to find something or somebody else to blame it on. Facebook may make it easier but you still have to make the choice in regard to how you use it.

And for the record, I come from a small-ish (at least it was when I lived there) town with plenty of cowboys, and the "problem" was just as prevalent there. They just had to work a little harder to find a mistress or settle for the neighborhood slut that they meet in the bar. A cheater is a cheater regardless of how, why, or what social media sites you have at your disposal.

The best way is to never sign up in the first place. I don't have a fb account. And after poking around my wife's account the other day I found out why I don't have one. That site is annoying.

Or maybe do as you promised and be faithful 'til death do you part'.

facebook has it uses. Keeping in touch with distant family is one.

Just dont add random people you met once. My rule for accepting people as friend is : if i see them on the street would I talk to them?

This times a million!

Thanks for this article. I deactivated my account a year or so ago when I realized it was nothing more than people who were attention whores posting everything they did throughout the day. I knew that it would never be permanently deleted, but hopefully this does the trick.

Thanks!

Facebook is NOT required for that. People treat it as if it is, but it isn't. You have an internet connection....that connection is alot more useful than Facebook.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What I find interesting about this is that with this being a tech site, no one seems interested at all in the fact that this article is a lie. Even if you do exactly what this article says, your account IS STILL THERE. There is absolutely NOTHING you can do to get rid of it (even after that 14 days). You might "deactivate" it and never go to it ever again. But it is and always will be part of their system. Zuckerburg is never going to be willing to truly delete your account. Chances are that the "app" to archive it also archives it on THEIR server at the same time.

The only way to TRULY get rid of all your personal data is to file a lawsuit against them.

Incorrect, after the 14 days your account is permanently deleted. Hence the word permanently.

Incorrect, this is the internet. Nothing EVER gets permanently deleted. Even on the slim chance that it does actually get removed from Facebook's servers...it's still on other servers (outsourced agents). This is something that really ought to be clear as crystal to any user....just as the idea of opening every email you get in your inbox will likely get you infected. We're talking old news here. This isn't some radical new idea.

I seriously cannot tell if you are serious...

He's serious in that the data is archived and continues to be useful data to them for data collection and mining purposes, even if you "delete" your profile.

Thus the rule of thumb to remember anything you post/upload to the internet: assume it will remain there forever.

It's actually true. When it comes to data collection, companies are strenuously encouraged AND told to save all data collected on ANYTHING related to their purpose. Browsing for porn in incognito mode? They know it was you regardless if you had the privacy setting on or not.

Exactly. Facebook calls permanent data archival 'compliance' and they do it with a straight face. Consider how every once in a while we'll read a story about some crime that took place and law enforcement goes to FB and they magically are provided data belonging to a 'person of interest' even though the profile had long been deleted.

Of course if you're committing crimes you get what you deserve but it demonstrates the point that the data is archived and likely indefinitely
