Best Buy reported its financial figures for the nine week sales period covering the all-important holiday sales. The sales revenue was down overall with online sales up by 10%. Even though the online sales improved, it was not enough to counter the weak in-store sales this holiday season.

“During the most important period in the retail calendar – the holiday sales season – we were able to improve our Domestic comparable store sales trends compared to the performance of the last several quarters and continue our strong traffic growth in our online business.

how many articles and dumb ass people does it take to drive home the point that people don't have as much disposable money as they used to!?!

As much as I hate best buy I'd love to shop there if I was making what I used to before the collapse in 2009.

Go from 100K to making 35K - yeah you are going to cut back everywhere you can.

Strip all the economic reasons out of the way and I still have to say "Christmas" and the whole "holiday spending expectation" is a total crock. Trillions in debt and all we can think about is spending more to buy our kids love for a few more months.

Call me a scrooge - (im only 31) but I'd love to see ONE christmas where nobody got anything unless it was something self made by a loved one.

Best Buy is a dinosaur whose extinction is inevitable. It's what always happens,a company appears, undercuts the competition, then when success arrives they get too big and greedy, forgetting what got them there. Their prices rise, customer service goes in the toilet, and all they're interested in is selling big ticket items. Scams like the Geek Squad, bundle "deals",and outrageous installation fees have made them a running joke.

I have to agree with this 100% very well said. Things have changed allot my children have adjusted just fine. We celebrate on a smaller more family oriented way.

As a best buy employee, what I saw this year was low priced large TV's fly out the door. There wasnt a have to have item that everyone wanted, nor were there any "sales" on nick nack things that you had to have. No real impressive game releases before Xmas either. With the rumor of new consoles from sony and microsoft floating around the game section didnt fare well either. I think the trend echoed throughout the B&M stores and on-line retailers. With the government in disarray, new taxes on paychecks. The people just didnt spend. I forsee this trend for the next 5 years or so. Oh well, at least I still have a job.

I agree! I'm 33 and I am so sick of the commercialism of Christmas. It would be refreshing and far more meaningful if family members made things for each other. My father-in-law make me kindling one year (I had a wood stove), it's the gift I remember most fondly since he put so much effort into chopping up all those bits of wood.

I highly, highly, highly doubt Best Buy is the one and only tech company to be in this boat. [H] only seems to post stuff about them though for some reason.

They aren't the only ones, but they're among the biggest, and that draws attention. They helped put companies like Circuit City,CompUSA,ect. out of business during their rise, now they're in the same boat. Pissing off customers with poor service, high prices, and questionable marketing scams will do that to you.

I agree with just about everything you said, except that the financial collapse happened long before 2009. I lost my job in December of 2007 when the construction industry started to collapse and it wasn't much longer before I saw Bush at that press conference talking about the economy being in trouble and talking about bailouts.
