What used to be the dominion of the very rich, beginning with the satellite phone, has now become a daily necessity to over six Billion of the world’s population. Of course we are talking about proliferation of world-wide mobile communication that can fit in your pocket, purse or backpack.

“The figures highlight the important role developing countries are playing in terms of telecommunication revenues and investments, particularly during the recent economic crisis,” ITU said in a statement regarding the report

Yeah. Its an amazing time. Just think about it, you get porn over the internet any time any where. What a time we live in.

Surprising figure considering how poor most of the world is, really makes you think about how US citizens get buttfucked by providers simply because we CAN pay more. Want windows 7, it'll cost you 2-3 times more in the US than China, movie just comes out, the DVD comes out within a couple of weeks in Russia, want fast internet? it'll cost you $40 for the 5Mbps speeds, all the way up to $200 for 50+ Mbps speeds S.Korea $19.95 gets you gigabit fiber to your house. Ok the last one is dependent upon companies, but still, the same company will charge more based upon if they can afford more or not.

For every 7 people on earth, 6 of them use a mobile device?

Unless that includes people who use multiple mobile devices... then screw it.

The article didn't really clarify, so I'm guessing they're confusing "accounts" or "devices sold" with "people". I've seen way too many people who have more than one cell phone.

I really hope so, because I'm starting to feel really lonely in my group of those without a cell phone OR a Facebook account :D

Considering the continent of Africa, a large portion of Asia/India are dirt poor, the amount of elderly people in N.America/Europe that never will have a mobile device even if they can afford one, children of the planet who do not have a mobile device, large amounts of S.America who can't afford such devices, I call pure BULL-SHIT!
I would think that is a TOTAL number of cellphones and mobile devices sold. Some folks are on their 5-6th mobile device.

So, that's six billion people who are going to get brain cancer and die sooner?

I saw 2 years ago a documentary about Korea and Japan and they mentioned it was fairly usual to see people with two phones or even more (one for work, one for personal usage, etc). With that in mind, 6 billion is fairly believable.

I wasn't sure if i believed 6 billion people use mobile devices. But the article threw out this gem
"According to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), six billion people in the world use smartphones and/or tablets."
and now i know it's BS.

I think they are including just normal mobile phones in the total ... since outside the US mobile lines are far more common than land lines that might not be beyond the realm of possibility ... also since developed countries have so many mobile devices it is possible for every family member (including kids to have mobile devices) ;)

the data is more likely from number of units sold and it might just be right, considering around 2.5 billion people are in two of the world's biggest country and majority of them are using it. i can certainly say for India as people might not have good home to live in but they sure has good mobile to use on their daily lives. also keep in mind USA, UK, Germany, Japan countries such advance communication provides their employee with such devices (cellphones mainly, but in some case tablets as well) so with their private devices and devices for work might just add up to around billion.

so yes if they are saying 6 billion people are using it, it's bullshit, if they had said 5 billion than it might have been believable.

I know in India mobiles are more common than land lines. Most people have one. But that said, India makes up 1.2 billion of people, and according to wikipedia it's 31% of it's population is 0-14 years of age and I doubt most kids that age would have a mobile phone, so straight away that's 0.37 billion who I doubt would have a phone even if every adult did (and certainly not every adult does).

As others have said, this is mobile accounts, not actual people. Also, keep in mind that tablets and anything else that has its own mobile data plan count as an account... so if you have a work cell phone, a personal cell, a pre-paid phone you bought overseas to use for a week (with its own sim), and an ipad or other tablet device with some sort of limited data plan, you count as 4 'people' in their numbers.

and think about all the wifi signals that are invisible in the air what does to our Brains?

With 2 billion people living for less than $2 a day, I seriously doubt that 6 billion figure
