Research on the behavior of 216 college students as related to their Internet usage, finds the students who had high email use, or switched Internet applications frequently showed a correlation between their Internet behavior and depression.

Specifically if you share a lot of files online, switch between Internet applications, watch a lot of videos, or check email obsessively, you could be depressed.

Or you could have ADD (switching between applications) or be bored.

Given the results are taken over the course of a month, if you have repeated long periods of boredom to actually cause it to register in their results, then there's probably a good chance you're also depressed. Everyone gets bored from time to time, but excessive boredom is probably a good pointer towards depression.

I thought I was just bored and passing the time guess i'm depressed.

Been bored for years at a stretch. Not depressed in the least, no signs of it at least.

I'm assuming they rounded up kids from their campus, in which case I'd assume the majority there are depressed, besides drinking and St Pats, well, there isn't much to do in Rolla.

Maybe I worded my post badly, I didn't mean to say everyone who has long term excessive boredom is depressed but rather than those with depression may also have long term excessive boredom.

Personally I've had periods of depression in the past for various reasons and certainly at times the periods of depression have coincided with long term boredom because usually when I get depressed it's because I'm not doing interesting things, have nothing to keep my mind occupied and feel like my life is going no where.

The question arises, if you're bored for a whole damned month/year... why? Why aren't you doing something stimulating?

I polled myself and came to the conclusion that studies like these are fucking stupid.

Because you can't find anything stimulating to do. Because the things that you did find stimulating are no longer stimulating. Because you are depressed, or bored with them. Because you have worked it all out, and no longer have a purpose. Game over.

Raise your hand if you think this survey is legitimate. I betcha none of the students in the survey provided totally legitimate results because they knew they were being watched. They stopped surfing for all the stuff they usually would look at like rubber chicken slap fights, furry porn, lube coated body builder workout videos, naked nuns on slip n' slides covered in equine urine, and whatever else so the survey is probaby totally useless.

My hand is pre-occupied.:D
(BTW: can you send me links to some of that stuff?:p)

Oh no, I don't do stuff like that. The only thing I ever do with the internet is download legal ISOs of Linux distributions, make stupid comments here, and play Hello Kitty Online.

I'd like to see this study reproduced on a larger scale before drawing anymore conclusions, but it is still interesting. It begs this question... What is the cause/effect relationship involved that leads to the result stated in the article?

For example, if the students are replacing one on one interaction with other people with emails, there might be merit to their findings. As of now? It's a stretch to say this proves anything.

Crap, I should get rid of all the knives! Never know when I'll try to off myself!

I’ll give it to you on a larger scale: The position of everything in the Universe is determined by the position of everything else in the Universe. The rules of positioning are governed by force and direction. These are determined by the rules of energy transference & transformation, how massive it is and how far away it is from the point that it is influencing, effectively gravity. Theory of Relativity is based on this.

To find the cause of an effect, you need to trace all the influencing forces right back to their point of origin. For example, if you want to take into account everything, then you will need to go back to a point which is about 13.7 billion Earth years ago. If you want to take into account what was specified to influenced the outcome of the that survey, then you will need to look more at what they put in and less at what they left out (if you choose to be that way inclined).

Everybody moves in a straight line, unless compelled by external forces to act otherwise. In other words: everybody moves in a logical straight line (its kinks, bends, twists, inclinations are logical). In other words: everything in existence follows the path of least resistance available. Fait and logic are the same thing. Find the paradox effect, and you will have found the path of God.

I think the 'study' should focus more on the content of what these bored individuals are downloading and sharing.

OR, it could be that people who are depressed behave in this manner because they now have the Internet, etc. at their disposal...

What a ridiculous "study".
