Porn Sites Safer Than Religious Web Sites

Boogeyman superstitions never took a hold to me so I never visited those sites, as for the others, well, lets just say I got a few colds.

Well, religion has killed way more people IRL than porn ever did. I guess it follows that porn would be safer on the interwebs too.

Seems fitting. One is about them fucking you any way possible. The other is porn.

Truth.

before anyone hops on that good ol fashioned new timey religion bashing... read the actual PDF. it actually does not say that anywhere.

what it DOES say is that there is less incidents of porn sites hosting infections than any other sector... what it does NOT say, nor does it even hint at it, is where they classify religious websites as there are 10 categories (including porn) that they could be under...

but uh.... feel free to twist information to suite your needs there... thats quite alright...i guess....

Obvious really - webmasters on religious websites don't have a clue about security. Porn sites have the cash to pay real admin to look after the site.

Story time: (2010) Searching for something unique via Google I got a result on a Catholic Church website. Odd as there was no connection. Clicked on the link to find a dodgy search script which attempted to infect me. So I emailed the church to tell them it was there and offered to help clean it up. Told him where to look. (It was not accessible from the front page of the site, only via Google. Clever little script that built a search result page for the key word I was looking for.)

Amazing thing was, a few days later I then got one of the most abusive emails you have ever seen from this "religious" webmaster. He was now accusing me of infecting the website!! Even threatened me with his "Irish Mafia Friends" and the "Local Authorities".

I emailed him my phone number and told him to call. Then asked him if he ever actually had read his "book" and stories of Good Samaritans and trusting people. Turned out his "mate" had told him I typed my emails too fast for me to be human...

Religious sites have incompetent idiots in charge of them. They trust in their $DEITY$ instead of reading the security manual.

Why do you think scammers hang around churches, the people there have pre screened themselves for gullibility.

Just wanted to add that the list is of the top 10, which means that religious sites are either rated to be safer or unclassified.

Not religious, hate it with a passion. Calling bullshit on this though. Porn sites are still by far the most invasive of websites. Most porn sites are a part of a little profit ring that will redirect you to partner sites to try and farm as many ad hits as possible from you. Them doing this though also has the effect of exposing you to many more potentialy malicious ads because your computer is bouncing around so much to different networks.

If people want real good security, they need to realize they should get rid of this stuff. Quicktime isn't needed. Acrobat Reader can be replaced with Foxit. Java isn't needed, and the only browser that uses ActiveX is Internet Explorer. You can browse 99% of the internet just fine without this junk. The real unforunate thing is people usually manage to find one or two sites or pieces of software that use them, so the ratio of risk vs reward is terrible. Now if only there was something that could replace Flash entirely.

have porn sites changed since the late 90's ?
i remember back in 2000, there were loads and loads of pop ups and porn dialers.

now i just get my porn from torrents. Much cleaner experience

Actually, secular based philosophies have killed more people than religiously based philosophies ever did.
So, in a sense, the underlying ideology behind porn (which is more compatible with secularism) is more responsible for the deaths of tens of millions if not hundreds of millions of people.

Research Communism responsible for more deaths ect.

This is such a stupid pissing contest.

We've used all sorts of justifications to kill. The distinction between religious and secular motivation isn't necessary because it comes from the same terrible place; The human mind.

If thousands of religion bashing threads have taught me anything, it's that Communism is automatically categorized as a completely legitimate religion as soon as death counts are mentioned. Same goes for other secular philosophies with similar stains on history.

Obvious really - webmasters on religious websites don't have a clue about security. Porn sites have the cash to pay real admin to look after the site.

Many church websites are run by volunteers, and many of them are not the most computer literate. Also, consider the kind of people that visit the websites. How many older people that are likely to visit a religious website have money and are also fairly computer illiterate, especially when it comes to security? The porn sites are in it to make money, and getting a virus is a sure way to lose paying customers so of course they're going to focus on security. It's a simple case of criminals and businesses both doing what they always do: Try for a big and easy payoff while minimizing risk to themselves.

Right on the money.

Way to stereotype.... :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Why would you even post this POS trolling article, Steve? It doesn't ANYWHERE in the PDF state anything about religious sites being less safe than porn sites. The only thing it does tell us is that porn sites are among the safest sites on the web. You just had to throw "religion" in there to get the bashing going. Very mature.

You need to realize these are two different establishments where one offers you a service for a fee while the other wants some offerings for a service!

I initially thought the same. But after looking through the PDF more closely, I found the quote buried on page 33.

Last paragraph of b-istr_main_report_2011_21239364.en-us.pdf page 33

Moreover, religious and ideological sites were found to have
triple the average number of threats per infected site than
adult/pornographic sites. We hypothesize that this is because
pornographic website owners already make money from the
internet and, as a result, have a vested interest in keeping their
sites malware-free – it’s not good for repeat business.

It does say "threats per infected site" instead of "triple the number of infected sites". Maybe they're just playing with the wording. I think everyone here would agree that one of the quickest ways to get infected on an unpatched machine is to just cruise a bunch of porn sites.
