Google has released the FCC’s report on Google’s data collection from unprotected WiFi networks. In a nutshell, the FCC agreed that what Google did was wrong, but broke no laws. Google blamed the entire fiasco on an engineer and was heard to say in their best Sgt. Schultz voice, I know noth-ING :D

“While we disagree with some of the statements made in the document, we agree with the FCC’s conclusion that we did not break the law,” a Google spokesperson told VentureBeat over e-mail. “We hope that we can now put this matter behind us.”

Google needs to be punished. Also people need too lock there WIFI . Learn the technology your using

Oh it got punished alright...fined 25K. I wonder if this new bill cispa which is KGB's wet dream will allow our fascist overloads a peak into this data collected.

Yes, we should totally punish them for not violating any laws *and* coming forward with what happened. Remember they weren't caught doing it, they openly came out and said it happened. Those bastards.

Cliffs? What did Google do exactly?

Basically Google turned on wireless data collection for it's Steetview cars.

The conceptual idea is that as Google drove along they'd be able to map the relative wireless penetration, type of wireless network, and other wireless information that could be gathered.

The problem is that some of Google's data capture included more than just wireless network information. Google also captured "other" data that was on unsecured networks, such as passwords and browsing data, that could potentially include things such as Credit Card Numbers.

Google was pretty quick on the fess-up to the amount of data that was a captured by the Streetview system. But, as the FTC had to admit, there's really no laws that say that you cannot capture unsecure network transmissions... and if somebody was transmitting stuff on an unsecure network... well... DUH.

One of the big questions raised during the investigation covered whether or not Google's executive staff had ordered the overly aggressive network data capture. As the FTC report noted there was no evidence to suggest that aggressive capture was ordered by an executive.

Hope that answers your question.

Doesn't the NSA just do whatever it wants as it stands now anyway?
