Google, Facebook Remove Content In India

Hey, did you hear that story about offensive content being removed by Google at the request of government officials in India? I could've sworn it was just here a minute ago. ;)

Online giants Google and Facebook said Monday they had removed allegedly offensive content on their Indian sites as part of a court case seen as a test for Internet control and censorship. They have been named alongside another 19 Internet firms in private criminal and civil cases being heard in a New Delhi court which will determine whether they can be held responsible for obscene material generated online by users.

Ummm so Google is still for censorship in other countries at the request of the local gov't.( See Google's entrance into China)yet they came out against the censorship that our Congress was trying to push on us with SOPA..so it see as long as Google is making money they are for censorship, they are against it when it hurts them making money...
 
Hey don't worry, the censorship is here too. They just hide it better and selectively enforce it until the complete control grid is in place. After that when you complain about it no one will here you and there will be no recourse for you but to accept it or get labelled a terrorist.

i wonder if they also hold the local phone company responsible for those who call and threaten others via the phone, or make plans to do something illegal?

That is over simplified don't you think? In the China case Google really did seem to push the issue against censorship right up until they were threatened out of the country. There is also a difference between proposed legislature (SOPA) and pre-existing law in India. Yes, Google is there to make money but they aren't the vicious money grabbing bastards you seem to suggest.
 
If they need to be for censorship or whatever to get into a country (China or India especially, huge markets) they'll do what they have to do.

Not surprising. Arguably if they weren't there someone else would be. That's their argument anyway, while saying "we do no evil."

well, they are more hardcore than Americans/Europeans, but compare to them, Indians just do it privately and not publicly (like some kind of trophy show off)

and as compre to Asian countries, the laws are lot different and the world FREEDOM doesn't really give that much of freedom to ones as it does in western culture.
