So, does internet addiction cause these brain abnormalities or did the brain abnormalities cause internet addiction?

Then the participants underwent brain scans to look at any differences that might exist in the brains of the IAD sufferers and in controls. They found several areas of decreased volume in IAD participants, and for some of these areas, there was a negative relationship between volume and the length of time the participants had been addicted to the Internet. In other words, the longer they were addicted, the less volume they had in certain regions.

I love this sort of studies. What they never bother to tell you is everything you do changes the brain. People tend think of the brain as an object when they should really think of it as a dynamic, adaptive system.
 
This just in "internet addiction" (which is nothing like any other sort of addiction) shows up in the brain (which no other addiction has done before)
