India has followed China in warning 21 social networking sites that they face being blocked in India unless policies are instituted to monitor and censor content. The process has begun to formally notify and serve summons on the companies. Google and Facebook have both responded to the original complaint by citing their global non-interference corporate policies.
The case first began with a private complaint filed by journalist Vinay Rai against these firms for allegedly webcasting objectionable content. Representatives of the 21 companies were thus summoned to court and a long proceeding began.
