It’s bad enough that drivers talk on their cellphones while operating a motor vehicle, but the number of drivers turning to texting while driving is dramatically on the rise. With that rise, the number of highway deaths associated with phone distraction also increased. The laws in 35 states that make it illegal to text while driving are having little or no effect on the trend.
The NHTSA also held a separate telephone survey of 6,000 drivers and found that 18 percent of adults admitted to texting while driving, and about 50 percent of drivers aged 21 to 24 said it was part of their repertoire.
