Netflix takes up over 30% of peak U.S. downstream traffic? A few months ago they claimed it wasn't 30%, before that they claimed it was, and before that...yeah, you see where I'm going with this. ;)

Despite recent troubles, Netflix is a major force on the Internet, accounting for 32.7% of peak U.S. downstream traffic, according to a new report. Sandvine Intelligent Broadband Networks' report analyzed 200 Internet service providers in 80 countries and found that real-time entertainment apps take up 60% of peak downstream traffic, up from 50% last year. Netflix has more than half of that share. Sandvine considers the hours between 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. to be peak times.

I use it everyday, doesnt surprise me.

<3 me their tv selection.

Yup they want to get paid 3 times for the same data stream, because that would be fair.

Funny you posted this article Steve, cuz due to Netflix (amonger other things) I'm 13gb away from exceeding my 250gb limit for the month, and I still have 7 days left before the rollover :(. First time this has ever happened to me too....

HOW???

They lost 800,000subscribers since their Qwikster BS??? See where it has gone since then! :D

No surprise since my connection gets slower by the week. Thanks streamers.
Just wait 2 days for the damn disc to arrive. Instant gratification is creating a culture of ADD cases.

I think you just have a shitty ISP.

Yea if there is a demand for service beyond their capacity, providers need to step up and increase it. That is supply and demand.

My isp is pretty good, but for $60 a month it should be.

Why not put the blame where it belongs?

Ok page 1 of the report says Netflix 27.6% not 32.7%
They dont say how they got their numbers.
They claim that the average broadband user on USA downloads ~23GB per month.

Skimmed all around the north america section, and again, they didn't explain how they got their numbers, so i would bet that just as 99% of all statistics, they got them out of their ass (as good an explanation as any other, because they say at most that they were provided by Sandvine network customer base, comprised of service providers and are a representative ammount).

In any case the report is just a wake up call to ISP's, meant as an "Hey, this is what you should be planning around!", and the USA trend is media streaming in general at peak internet time (they claim over 60% of all downstream at peak internet usage time)

30% Netflix
30% Torrents
30% Spam
9% Porn
1% the rest of the internet

You know, we aren't supposed to mention Usenet (first rule of Usenet), but I think Usenet uses a large chunk of the bandwidth as well.

I know hundreds of people and out of all those people maybe 2 even know what usenet is, LOL.

Ok, so bandwidth usage is increasing exponentially especially because of streaming video, music and downloading games and other software from the internet (Steam, Origin, etc). And now ISPs are moving away from unlimited usage to tiered-data.

Things are not going to look pretty.

isp will soon have limited usage for all consumers. unlimited downloads could be old news in old days, very soon

Damn you cox communications for throttle my ass near the end of the month

"There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics"

I wonder how much Youtube uses then...you'd think it'd see more usage than netflix does.

not sure if serious.

Amazing how many people love watching shitty old B movies from 10 years ago.

Wow that's pretty good. I thought spam took like 80% or something like that? Guess it's no longer the case.

Netflix makes up for over 90% of my downstream Internet usage on unmetered bandwidth. Windows updates is 9%, and email/web is 1%. Yeah, I don't do pr0n anymore, have grown out of it.

They dont say how they got their numbers.

Studies show that 82.6% of all statistics are made up, according to a new report. This number rapidly approaches 100% if the statistic is stated to the tenth of a percent and the statement begins with "studies show" and/or ends with "according to a new report".

This. If they are awarded or allowed any more money, they should be forced to improve bandwidth and infrastructure with it.

The last two times we gave them a ridiculous sum of money with "you must use this to improve infrastructure" string attached, they just laughed, took the money, and went on exotic vacations. They should be forced to use the Billions of dollars we already gave them, or be shut down and thrown in jail.

I cancelled Netflix Streaming due to the lack of good quality movies to watch, I use crapp Comcast On Demand a lot more.
