Aside from the fact Best Buy employees open new products, use them and then put them back in the box and sell them as new...this story is kinda funny.

I spoke to their manager and he just made excuses. "When we get in new devices the techs like to open them up and explore them a bit" was his reasoning. I then asked why would there be such a vulgar photo on my phone then and he went on to say that they should have deleted it before it was sold. Awesome.

It's the guy's fault for going to be$t ripoff in the first place. Avoid them like the plague.

At least one of them didn't decide to take it into the bathroom.

;)

"The OP needs to remember to email corporate and be sure to point out he was completely satisfied with the 2nd supervisor who went above and beyond to remedy the situation. Don't go into details about getting free gift cards or her picking up the phone herself, as that might get her in trouble. Just explain how the first manager didn't do jack, but he was a happy customer after the 2nd manager picked up the slack."

I think this a great idea but would the 2nd manager really get in trouble for fixing the lackluster response of the 1st? If so upper management needs a swift kick in the head!

i hate those dipshits at bestbuy.

you should see the greasy finger smudges they leave on the pc when they do their geek squad "optimize my ass" shit.

if they have such butter fingers, i'd be surprised if they didn't drop your computer a few times while "optimizing" it.

If anything this story tells two things...

1) Best buy still has a policy of "testing" things out before hand and will lie openly to your face if you question them about it

2) You often get some free stuff if you complain hard enough :D

Hell I once had a hand print on the crust in a frozen pie I bought (Claim Jumpers I think) no big deal I'm sure it was covered when the worker was putting the plastic wrapped pie in a box and maybe pressed down a little to hard... but I took pictures sent it away (fucking ConAgra owns everything it seems)... well they apologized and sent me a refund check ($8... even though the pie was on sale for $5)... and yes I did eat the pie, hell it'll be cooked for almost an hour at 425 even if it was a bare hand that touched it the heat should kill anything living :D

Just goes to show that Best buy is like Honey Badger -- They don't give a !@#$.

Which explains why they're the last place I'll shop for anything that is carried somewhere else --even if the somewhere else charges an extra five bucks.

The second manager's excellent service, I credit to them as a person, not the organization.

Not for fixing the problem persey, but for giving out extra stuff for the problem. Instead of making them wait for them to get more phones in the person went beyond normal duties and went to get a different phone. They also gave him free money. They would be glad that they got to keep a future customer, but they would like to do it without any money being spent.

It is 100% completely reasonable to open a product for display. It is also reasonable to have employees play with the display unit. It helps famaliarize them with the product, which in turn helps sell it.

However you can't sell them as new. They are open box/display sales then.

Over at a Meijer my parents bought me a VCR for christmas. I opened it Christmas day and I was checking it out, well there was tape called Valley Girls, hooked it up and it was porn

This story doesn't have anything to do with bestbuy. This story is about employees who don't know how to properly treat customer product. These same employees would do the same thing in any other corporation if given the chance. BestBuy doesn't go around saying it's "ok" to test customer product and try to sell it off as new.

no, the second manager would not get in trouble for giving out twenty bucks of giftcard. The cx was mad and he has good reason, and she reacted appropriately, assuming the article is correct in what happened.

this also sounds very fishy, i dont know what manager would try to excuse this situation like this. This is either a terrible manager or we're not getting the whole story.

I think Steve purposely stories about Best Buy because the nerds around here will makes 10 pages of posts acting like Best Buy kills babies.

A lot of these stories are isolated incidents but the people here will make it out to be national policy.

I bought an external HD at Best Buy 2 weeks ago, didn't get any free pr0n included :(

What's up with stores hiring minimum-wage kids instead of people with PhDs in consumer electronics? (i.e. I don't think the stupid party is Best Buy.)

I don't think Techs open them up an explore them a bit. They can explore the display models, if they want to explore. What does the article mean a customer "went to pick up his new phone"? It sounds like he previously bought the phone and wanted Best Buy employees to do something with the phone, at which point the picture would have been snapped. No big deal.

Something similar happened to me at Futureshop in Canada, which is owned by BestBuy. Bought a Denon receiver. Boxed look like it was straight from the factory and unopened but when I opened the box the receiver had dust on it and I found a very small scratch mark. Phoned up the manager and was offered a new replacement or $60.00 off the one I already had. I took the $60.00 off. I expect one of their people took it home and used for a month or two then returned it and resealed the box. Or it was another customer's return. Either way, despicable.

I am thinking they preordered the phone.

I don't think it's national policy. Rather, I think that either national policies aren't always well-defined, or otherwise aren't well-enforced. Probably because operating under "wink wink nudge nudge" mode earns more money.

If a store is called on the carpet for poor behavior, the rule may be enforced to avoid publicity issues. However, I don't have a feeling that Best Buy sends in secret shoppers for rule enforcement --other than perhaps the rule enforcement of "Were you offered a chance to get a Rewards Card? Best Buy charge? Extended warranty or replacement plan? Monster Cables or accessories?"

The upsells are the rules that do get enforced. Plenty of other things are grey areas. Having worked in other retail establishments back in the early 90's, I saw those practices slip in all the time.

It's a good thing Best buy doesn't sell babies, or ....... well, I'll leave it to your imagination :)

dang im glad i dont work a best buy anymore.. There are some intelligent and helpfull people that work at some best buys.. but they quickly get run off by the so called "upper management" yeah they are whats ruining retail america..

I like Best Buy. I find very good deals there often and I like having a B&M store I can actually drive to and physically see the item I'm about to buy. That being said, you gotta do your own research and know that the "techs" working there are barely making minimum wage and arent usualy gonna know barely any more than the guy working in the TV department at Walmart.

Intelligent people get ran off by upper-management? If they're intelligent, they never had an intention of staying in retail for long in the first place. Why would an intelligent person want to stand around all day, for low pay, helping customers who know less than monkeys? "What's the difference between DVD and Blu-ray?..."

I've seen the same behaviour at Circuit City and Comp USA before, and they are both gone. Best Buy sucks assent. They underpay their employees, over charge customers and treat you like an idiot.
In short, fuck Best Buy, just shop some place else.

Lots of stores sell open stuff. I have gotten quite a few "new" items from amazon.com (from them not a reseller) that have had finger prints all over the "new" items. I even got one with the last persons shipping and rma label.

There are sure a fuckton of "isolated incidents" regarding Best Buy, then...

I think once you get enough "isolated incidents" you can begin to draw conclusions about what kind of company it really is.

Every business has some incompetent or dishonest employees. Just like every business has some incompetent or dishonest customers.

Oh my, US soldiers caught killing innocent people. Must be a national policy. I mean, I read a few articles of this happening over the last decade.

This sounds silly.

Yes, Best Buy is a company that sells, or at least tries to sell everything it has in inventory. Like any other. Damaged, new, returned, used for display. Newegg sells open box returned items too. Guess I better write them off too.

I can't believe people shop at best buy. If best buy was the only place with water and oxygen, I would kill myself by not going in.

IDIOTS.

"Isolated incident" my ass! Go to any consumer ratings site and you'll find an endless litany of horror stories. It seems to be an inevitable cycle with stores like this, they start out small, the chain gains popularity and grows, knocks off the competition, then gets fat and lazy. They get so full of themselves they think they can get away with anything. Then as their popularity dwindles some other new chain appears and the cycles starts all over.
