What kind of scumbag would target senior citizens with this kind of scam?

The letters, which claim to be from Artisan International License, Compliance and Investigations, state that the recipient has been caught downloading porn movies. In common with their ‘legal’ counterparts, the scammers offer to make the whole sorry episode go away for a few thousand dollars. If they don’t settle, further legal action is threatened.

it's actually common lately here in canada, I get people all the time telling me they just got a call from microsoft that there computer was infected and they want to help clean it... or from the canadian goverment saying there computer is sending unsolicitated emails and legal action may apply if they don't clean it, would they like help .... and it's not just senior citizens.

Unfortunately seniors are target #1 for soulless scumbags like this. They've often got substantial savings, are more likely to be forgetful/confused and are often lonely and may override their feelings of caution if a scammer is being friendly and spending time with them.

I don't care. IMO Logan's Run should be mandatory policy.

Don't send me to jail for trolling.

Fucking Genius!! I wondered if this was going to happen at some point with the pay-up sceme of U.S. Copyright Group making healines.
It will also make US Copyright Group look like the scammers they are and no one will pay.
Let it roll.

I handle my eldery mother's bills for her and you should see the junk mail she gets. I've seen it disguised as everything from netflix folders, to FedEx envelops to even like mailorder precription packages.

Just this week I found a new one, this was one actually named "Sometown Water Authority", with "Sometown" being the name of the small city she lives in. Of course it has an out of state address and tried to get her to send them money.

So basically we now have hard evidence that the "legit" copyright trolls are the same as the "fake" ones.

I say we need to outlaw this immediately to protect the elderly just so we can see the RIAA, MPAA and the rest of their ilke decry the protection of seniors.

I was waiting for the "Scams that look like RIAA" letters to start. I think it just did.

Actually, even the real one's are scams if you think about it :)

We could call it the "Protect Senior Citizens from Internet Scumbags Act". No one would ever vote against it.

Some politician's aide will come up with a snazzy acronym for it. Seriously, I wonder how much they get paid - whoever came up with "PATRIOT Act" should have gotten a huge bonus and early retirement for coming up with that one.
