Since we are presently dealing with a potential disaster with Hurricane Irene, it’s only fitting to bring some good disaster news. Researchers from Georgia Tech claim to have developed software that will enable cell phones to communicate without the use of cell towers or the Internet. The software is called appropriately named LifeNet and should be available in the near future.

And the software isn't just useful in disaster situations. It could also be used in any region that lacks a reliable communications infrastructure. "
