Microsoft's new 3D facial modeling system is pretty damn impressive, don't you think? Thanks to Marcus P. for the link!

The researchers start by recording 3D facial performances made by an actor using a marker-based motion capture system (100 reflective dots are applied to the actor’s face). This recorded data then undergoes a facial analysis to identify a set of face scans needed to reconstruct certain facial features, and to determine the minimal set of face scans required. The scientists then use a laser scanner to capture high-fidelity facial scans. Finally, they combine the motion capture data with the minimal set of face scans.

Third face kinda reminds me of Contempt Costanza.

Why the need for markers on the face? Why can't the computer just track facial features directly?

Just a matter of time till someone puts the dots on their fat jello azz and gets some funny expressions.

For a moment I thought this was actually being done in real time...

when you do a game like NHL hockey, you need to have all the players to come at the studio to scan their faces, do the game has all the real faces....
