I think it is a stretch to call this guy a hacker, he didn't "hack" anything. How about "scamming scumbag?" That would definitely be fitting.

Campbell would then break into the women's Facebook accounts and make the risqué pictures their profile pictures, visible to all, Sohl said. He would also post a link to a website called Pinellas County Sluts, which had photographs of all of the women on it.

God I hate stupid journalists. You are right steve, this guy didn't hack anything and clearly isn't a hacker. Heck I would go so far as to say he isn't even a script kiddy even that is too advanced for this guy.

Granted I think this guy is slime personified. But I can't help but thinking, if you don't want people seeing you naked why take the picture and post it in the first place. All he did was move the photos from private to public and pass them around.
Please, don't think I'm defending him in the least. He deserves everything he's getting and probably more.

From the article: "One method Campbell used, Sohl said, was to send emails to the women saying they had received a greeting card. The email instructed the recipients to type in their email addresses and passwords, but did not lead to any greeting cards."

Will people ever learn? If they fell for this scam they deserved what happened to them. Maybe next time they won't type thier passwords into every form asking for them.

Luiz I wouldn't call him any of that either. All he did was trick them using the oldest one in the book.

Social Engineering hacks are still considered hacks. He got the women to voluntarily give up their email address and password. The majority of "hacks" are performed this way. What, you think every great hacker just knows how to 0day exploit thousands of people?

He can still be considered a hacker for getting the info, the women on the other hand should be considered idiotic for typing in their info to a malicious site...

< Not saying what he did was right, but this is another case of the "Functionally illiterate" discussion from earlier threads >

Lycidas is right, the article correctly labels this man as a hacker, what he did is social engineering. Kevin Mitnick is one of the most famous names in hacking and social engineering was his primary method of illegal entry into computer systems. Oftentimes its easier to exploit the human factor than it is to find new exploits in software.

I wish the media would start calling this guy a "phisher" as that is all he truly is. It isn't even truly social engineering, IMO. If the term phisher started entering the public consciousness, perhaps people would see it isn't some Hollywood style hacker typing in long lines of code into a command prompt, it's mainly you giving your credentials to anyone who asks.

I could agree with phisher. :D

Exactly, not a hacker by a long shot.

As expected... no pics.

Yea.... I agree with phisher... and while I agree he's a scumbag, these women are stupid to put their naked pics online... cuz once it's out, it's out forever.

Isn't social engineering, using information you know about the target and using that to exploit them by using their interests, hobbies and things like that? To me it sounds like this guy just sent out an email hoping for the best. Either that or a very mild form of social engineering because the email he sent out basicly targeted "Functionally Illiterate" people which is a huge group. I guess it was a form of social engineering, but a very vague one at that. He phished and caught the illiterates out of the huge target group.

Some of the women had sent risqué photographs to their boyfriends, who were stationed overseas in the military, Sohl said.

Wow. Great idea to fuck with the family/girlfriends of our military personnel. Not only is he a douche for making their lives even more difficult, but there's the added bonus that he'll probably get his ass kicked multiple times when they get back home!

Good points. The method he used was certainly some form of phishing. I would defend the social engineering claiming that since he knew the victims, he used that knowledge to make his phishing scheme more effective. The "cards" he sent probably came from spoof'd emails or at least tailored to their lives.

No one cares that military personnel's families are involved. That doesn't make what he did any worse or more wrong. Military personnel are not all "heroes" as the media likes to play them up, however I would always show respect for someone who served in the military no matter how big or small of a role they had in it. Now, if only people would show me respect for my job... lol

That is true. He probably did use spoof'd emails and since he knew them he knew how to trick them. Socially engineered phishing attack :p.

Back in my day, these guys were called con-men.

Some hackers are con-man, Mitnick would fall into this class since he did a ton of social engineering (cons), but also used phone phreaking (hacking) to cover his tracks etc.

If you guys would like to see a greeting card, just post your email address and your password so I can upload it to your accout.

[Now I'm a hacker!]

yeah lol, I wouldn't call this guy a hacker by any means, and his victims aren't exactly the brightest group... That being said he's still a complete asshole.

Wow, 19 lives traumatized and potentially destroyed by this asshole's stunt and he gets a slap on the wrist. I hope the 19 sues the fucker into oblivion.

All I want to know is what percentage of them were blond?

Not defending the douchebag, but having your nude pics posted on the web is hardly life destroying. Embarrassing? Yes, Traumatizing? Possibly..life destroying? Not even close.

I agree that they should all get the chance to sue him, not that they would get much.

Depends on how old the girls are and what they do for a living. There's too many variables that might define how this will affect each girls. Facebook isn't just about saying hello to friends and families. I would hazard to say most of them will be embarrassed by it and not speak of it again and it'll be forgotten, but there might be a few of them that'll be affected by it - coworkers who saw her nude - they'll never look at her the same at work. Ladies who plug their businesses on Facebook - the more conservative customers will look elsewhere (arbitrary, I grant you.) Or the younger girls would be condemned by their parents for having suggestive photos at all - although if this were the case, I'm sure the asshole would be put away for a long time for child pornography.

That's a good way to learn not to upload nudes pictures to the internet.

This guy is a prick but some people must learn the hard way.

Lifes goes on.

You are right. He is not a hacker. He is just curious about the woman and probably fallin love with her photos

No, that's a very bad way to learn. A good way to learn is for someone to read articles like this, contemplate the consequences of uploading photos of themselves, and then decide not to do it. Fools never learn from their own mistakes, but a wise person learns from the mistakes of others.

The mistake wasn't uploading the photos. They had it locked down. The mistake was giving out their credentials to the jackass social engineer.

ha ha! i love the name of the website he created where all the pics could be found....pinellascountysluts. classic...

> implying the women are fools just because they made some mistakes

Just making a contrast between foolish and wise behavior. The women made a mistake, but they may or may not learn from that mistake. If they learn, then they learn. If they do not, then they are fools. Please do not read more into what I say than I actually write. :)
