Amazon has sent out a letter to all California residents that are participants in the Amazon Associates Program after the governor signed a new internet sales tax law.

As a result, we will terminate contracts with all California residents that are participants in the Amazon Associates Program as of the date (if any) that the California law becomes effective. We will send a follow-up notice to you confirming the termination date if the California law is enacted. In the event that the California law does not become effective before September 30, 2011, we withdraw this notice. As of the termination date, California residents will no longer receive advertising fees for sales referred to Amazon.com, Endless.com, MYHABIT.COM or SmallParts.com. Please be assured that all qualifying advertising fees earned on or before the termination date will be processed and paid in full in accordance with the regular payment schedule.

This sucks, maybe California should get some of the money back it spends propping up the flyover states

Crap like this really annoys me as the Job position I have been offered would mandate I move to CA. :(

At this rate, Amazon will be running out of states in which to operate in several years.

California is the best, doesn't matter about the taxes, I buy my stuff from Newegg anyway so I already pay them.

Peeps are jealous, so they've got to hate.

They don't call it the Socialist Republik of Kalifornia for nothing.

Ha never moving there, at least my state can balance it owns budget...

At this rate, Amazon will be running out of states in which to operate in several years.

What they should do is just move their entire operation to Rhode Island.. Their warehouse alone is about 1/2 the state.. Im pretty sure RI wouldnt care.. Hell, maybe theyll even just sell it to Amazon..

This just ends referral bonuses for associates based in California right? I guess it sucks if it's a source of income but not like Amazon is pulling up stakes for sales.

Amazon charges sales tax for affiliates based in California. As a CA resident I'm charged sales tax from them. Amazon or affiliates w/o a physical presence in the state don't have to collect sales tax, I don't see how this would change that as it's worded.

You know, as much as I hate taxes, you can't get around the fact that you have always been required to report online purchases on your tax forms. It's just been really, really easy to cheat in this case.

So everyone saying that retailers shouldn't have to collect: I agree with you. But let's be honest here. What we're effectively asking for is a tax cut.

Better to move to some very underpopulated state already rolling in farm subsidies then.

Yep, basically because California legislators (and the governor) were trying to get more sales tax revenue, Californians are losing income, and California will lose income tax revenue. Smooth move.

You have to report it even if you physically buy a swim suit from a store in another state while on vacation. At least in North Carolina. Use Tax, which predates internet orders.

The federal government should pass a bill mandating taxes on business transactions for both online and brick and mortar businesses. 70% of the collected tax should go to the seller's state and 30% should go to federal. The burden of reporting these taxes should lie on the business and not the customer.

While I've been enjoying the hell out of not paying taxes for online purchases, I admit that it is total bullshit we're allowed to get away with that. Our states are missing out on huge amount of revenue that the vast majority of us accept as sales tax. We need to get with the times.

*INTERSTATE business transactions

Darn edit button omission.

And this is bad because? The problem is that government has this mindset when it comes to finances.

1 - spend the money even if it doesn't have it
2 - complain that it needs to raise taxes to make up for the budget shortfall
3 - repeat.

Joe citizen has to do it like this

1 - cut spending and not buy things that cannot be afforded
2 - done.

That's why people get ticked off at this kind of thing. If the governments of the states and the federal government would be responsible in controlling spending then this bandaid - and that's exactly what internet taxes are - would not even be an issue. If anyone seriously expects taxes on internet commerce to solve budget shortfalls they're dreaming. The state governments will just keep doing the same thing - spending more than they have, and then they'll raise taxes on something else. You need some fiscal conservatives in there to take an axe to the budget and stand up to the freeloaders that are sucking the working stiffs dry. That's the only way government budget problems will go away. Good luck getting any kind of conservatives in office in California. :(

I AGREE WITH YOU

Why in the world would people actually WANT to be taxed more? We are taxed enough as is, the problem isn't tax revenue, it's tax spending.

that is the delusion the republicans will want you to believe... face the facts we need more in revenue and with do away with wasteful spending and logical common sense cuts or we will end up like the Greeks

Screw that. It would have to pay well into the six figures to be worth the cost of living increases and all the bullshit that goes with that state.

Nope. I'm not jealous of Kaliforniastan at all.

Well California is trying to make money anyway it can since they are bleeding cash.

I have to have a budget myself, if I exceed my budget, then I lose my house, my car, my credit, etc etc etc.

Government should have to follow that same principle instead of raising taxes each time they cannot curb their wasteful spending.

The top tax rate after WWII was 94% for those earning more than $1 million per year. I thought we all wanted to go back to the good ol' days, right?

And all you flyover state posters can say, "Thank you" to rich Kaliforniastan paying all your welfare for you.

What if a state only had a sales tax? Would it be reasonable to require online businesses that sell goods to local citizens collect a sales tax?

Why in the world would people actually WANT to be taxed more? We are taxed enough as is, the problem isn't tax revenue, it's tax spending.

Exactly this... we are vastly outspending our tax revenue to where even significant increases wouldn't help anything, in fact it would hurt as people and businesses would have to cut back on their spending to make up the shortfall, cascading into lower tax revenues and earnings overall.

that is the delusion the republicans will want you to believe... face the facts we need more in revenue and with do away with wasteful spending and logical common sense cuts or we will end up like the Greeks

Wrong. COMPLETELY wrong. We need to cut spending, because at the rate we're going we could probably double all taxes and end up with a shortfall, despite that being completely unfeasible in the real world anyway. Spending needs to slow and reverse, and we need to stop increasing taxes which are only stifling the economy and making for lower overall revenue at a given rate.

Oh and to follow my previous post since there's no edit... the government's job isn't to tax everything into oblivion and become a full-on nanny state controlling our lives, it's to keep law and order with basic services and requirements for the nation (defense, transportation, central banking, etc.) then get the hell out of the way. People really have lost sight of what they're talking about here....

Pity, I buy a lot of used CDs and DVDs/BDs from Cali via Amazon.

Taxes and most of what is legislated at state or county level should be regulated by federal law only.
Take age of consent for instance, it's 16 or 17 in most states, but some states still consider teenagers immature retards so it's 18 in California. This country should really be called the Dissociated States of America.

I was going to reply to this, then I realized who the post was from.

Instead I'll just reduce my post to this:

I hope your kids get afflicted with disabilities

'Nuff said.

This x10 !

They should do away with welfare too, that's socialism that we don't need.

Except for those with disabilities (real ones, not "Oh I stubbed my toe and should get welfare for a year, I can't POSSIBLY work even though it only will take a couple of days to heal, oh lord the trauma my life was so unfair I should be paid for!!!"), I agree.

Anyways, there are several other states, including politically red ones, that have mutual tax agreements and those are poised to approve Internet taxes all at once.

For some reason I think when this spreads to even more states, that order by mail or phone will start making a comeback since those are still exempt and benefit from legal interstate commerce laws (cough). Automated phone systems should work well, if slowly.

They don't call it the Socialist Republik of Kalifornia for nothing.
I thought only internet kiddies with too much time and few brain cells did that. :p

(SNIP)

Agreed.

P.S. Just completely laughing out loud at Obama's "Oh, well, the most fortunate among us should be willing and able to pay a little more"... those people already pay 90%+ of our taxes as the top 1% of the population I think it was (or something equally ludicrous), and they want to jack taxes on those people even more? They're wealthy because (mostly) they worked for it, it's not their job to provide for the rest of us and help the government out with budget shortfalls  due to obscene overspending and continued growth of spending that a toddler could understand wouldn't work/fit properly.

Most of our budget goes to 3 things, Social Security, Medicare, and Defense spending, those 3 make up the vast majority of our spending. Social Security won't be able to pay for itself sooner or later unless something changes, it won't likely be around when I retire. I just read a report on the news stating that the total cost of our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will have costed taxpayers $4 trillion.

Let's not include the government bailouts which also include the 700 billion we gave to Wall Street.

Wrong. We already pay enough taxes and like others said we need to cut the spending. I hope Amazon keeps telling the states the go F themselves. I cannot believe so many people are in favor of paying more taxes, disgusting.
