Keith McMillen Instruments (KMI) announced today the SoftStep KeyWorx multi-touch foot controller, the world’s first foot controlled digital interface, providing a new and faster way to operate a computer. Available for Mac and Windows, SoftStep KeyWorx is a valuable new tool for everyone using a computer, from gamers, video editors, programmers, data entry professionals, disabled people, repetitive stress syndrome sufferers, and anyone who wants a faster way to use their computer.

Great idea, both for disabled people and average users.

People are gonna get thrashed in Starcraft by people using these things alongside their mice and keyboards! :D

Thought we got rid of this sort of foot action when sewing machines met electricity?

If you're not allergic towards DIY and want to save some money I recommend gutting some mice and keyboards and cheap keyboard sustain pedals with TRS jacks. When was the last time you pressed the middle-mouse button? I've got a foot pedal for that thanks to an old Logitech Pilot mouse, was able to trim a large piece of the PCB off without losing function.

Right now I'm working on something for keyboard input (complete with manual keyboard matrix decoding) that doesn't require gutting of sustain pedals. This is very good to have around, be it as a Push To Talk for your choice of voice communication software or an extra button.

I can see that being really useful along side a kb/m, but no way could it replace them. I'd like something like that for gaming, it would be awesome for assigning some of those far away from wasd keyboard actions.

So what happens when you are surfing porn? Yeah, hands free, but there will be some erratic feet movement.

I guess it has some use but it should have been designed with more tactile feedback because a persons feet are not very touch sensitive (especially with shoes on) so they are going to be continually pressing the wrong key and will find it more frustrating than it is worth.

I know alot of disabled people who can make use of these, kudos on that, though I doubt the average joe will try it out :)

nothing new here they tried this back in the 60's and rejected it for the mouse

Hardcore guilds in WoW will start requiring guild members to purchase this, similar to the Ventrillo requirement to maximize efficiency in their raids.

I agree, i don't see much use for it (programing???), but it does make a difference if you are one handed, that limits a lot of your gaming options. Being able to do wasp (with footpad), and move the mouse would make all the difference in the world to such people. It's impossible to do wasp, and move a mouse with only one hand; well not with out some serious modding at-least.
