Duke Nukem Forever review

Not sure why we needed another thread for this. ;)

So far we've got this, rockpapershotgun working on something, and that 45 minute crazy Brit thing that's pretty merciless so even by the end of today I think we'll have a decent body of material to work off of.

This PC Gamer review reads and has a score to follow it that I suspect comes from a person wearing some pretty nice nostalgic rosey colored glasses but that's ok. I understand that. :)

http://n4g.com/news/202402/far-cry-2-first-review-pc-gamer

They gave Far Cry 2 a 94/100. I can't come up with a more credibility damaging piece of evidence than that, speaking for myself.

2/5 stars.

^^ They're right. It could be the biggest POS of all time and it's going to sell well, as evidenced by some of the responses we've seen in the ever growing number of DNF threads.

So material is starting to trickle out. Past this, of course, you can always find people on forums who have been playing the leaked versions and see what they're saying.

I think PCGamer summed it up pretty nicely...

"there’s no getting around that at the end of that long road is only a good game and not an amazing one. It is what it is"

"Don’t expect a miracle. Duke is still the hero we love, but struggles to keep up with modern times. Crude humor and classic weaponry keep him in the game"

so pretty much what I was expecting...great for the nostalgia buffs, they'll love the naked girls, bad language and typical Duke stuff but for people that never played the earlier games or are expecting a classic remake they need to look elsewhere...the game is literally the same old Duke from 20 years ago...they should have at least tried to update the game a bit to appeal to a bigger audience...I would have given it a final score of 70-75%

I don't want a modern duke nukem that is made for a wider audience,
I want the same duke we have been waiting 15 years for. Not some dumbed down kiddy version that's made to please the masses.

Another new review. Headline: "Fail to the king, baby." 2/5 stars.

Let's shoot down the two fanboy apologist talking points that I've seen come up a few times right now.

1.) The reviewer has played the full game.

2.) The reviewer clearly loves Duke and loves gaming and loves PC gaming and has been doing it longer than a lot of you probably have.

Actually, I thought that review was kinda stupid. He ragged on the game for being low brow and juvenile. No shit? It's Duke. The other criticisms seemed fine, but he probably wrote that part to impress his wife.

Im waiting for a few more reviews. $50 bucks is too much to spend for memory lane. If they game was $20, I would probably pick it up.

$20, seriously? I wouldn't give Gearbox a single fucking penny after this abortion. Them buying the rights was only a cashgrab, it's obvious that never had any plans in doing this right and making this what they've built it up to be.

I was seriously looking at Colonial Marines, but no way in hell I'm going to put more $$$ in to Randy PITCH-ford's silver-lined pockets.

*nods* True enough.

Dude, chill the fuck out. It's just a game. Stop acting like you're owed something.

just download the demo and see for yourself  :p

He is owed $50 worth of entertainment. If he feels its only worth $20,so be it..Me,Im thinking $15 Steam Holiday Sale.

Looks like exactly what I was expecting from it. Still debating on whether I want to pre-purchase and save $5 or wait a bit, but I'll more than likely be purchasing it.

People need to stop blaming Gearbox for how Duke Nukem turned out. News Flash: THEY POLISHED THE GAME AND GOT IT OUT TO THE PUBLIC!!! THAT'S IT!!!! They didn't make the maps, models, animations, lighting, story, etc. They just cleaned up the things that needed to be cleaned up. That's it. They even said when they got it that the game was nearly complete and just needed some touching up. If anyone should be pointing the finger at a poorly made game it should be 3D Realms and their ridicules amount of money and time spent on making this game that should have been out yeeeeeeeeears ago. Gearbox didn't make the game, they just polished it. As the saying goes "you can polish a turd, dress it up and put glitter on it, it's still a turd."

Regardless of what people are saying I'm still going to get it. It's Duke Nukem! Not to mention this game has gone down in history as one of the longest developed games ever.

Agreed. Borderlands was a Gearbox game and was a very positive experience for me.

Regardless of what people are saying I'm still going to get it. It's Duke Nukem!

If you liked the demo then obviously that makes sense. More power to you. :)

Have you looked at the reviews or any of the footage posted in this thread by any chance?

Not to mention this game has gone down in history as one of the longest developed games ever.

Yup.

I think PC gamer is the only place to get the review right so far. Everyone else seems to be expecting something magical, and much different than any Duke game before. It seems like it's just an old fashioned follow up to the last Duke game, nothing more, nothing less. Most of these reviewers seem to expect it to be a life altering event or something.

Saw the preview on TV and i must say the game looks sucky. So does the graphics and game play. The graphics/game engine looks like it's from the late 90s.

Not surprised you'd say that.

I'm not perceiving that but YMMV. I'm getting the idea people wanted a game that didn't suck.

I'm really going to be eager to see your feedback on this game come next week.

My money says better than 50/50 that you'll be one of these people I talked about earlier that's been all up in arms in defense of their beloved Duke and when you get this game, play it for a while and it all sinks in...a few days...a few weeks...the hype dies down and the smoke clears and the emotion is gone and you digest it all...I'll bet you'll turn around and be one of the nastiest haters of the thing on this board.

You and a few others I've seen in these threads.

My money's on the table. ;)

What did people expect out of a game in development for 12-13 years? Go into Duke for the fun of it and not FPS innovation and you might end up enjoying the humor. But you can't blame Gearbox , what are they suppose to do? They bought the rights to the game , did a little clean up and patching and released it. Are they suppose to carry on the already beyond reason development period? That wasn't why they bought it.

Its more of a PR release , the one game that was said to release when hell froze over.

I cancelled my Steam preorder. The game looks way too scripted for me. It doesn't appear to have that super fast paced multi-player feel of the original. Ah, miss the days of D3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood.

Where are all the people that so praise this game now?!

My time is more precious than the 5 dollars I would *consider* paying for this title. Actually with 5 bucks, I can fill my gas tank about 1.25 gallons worth. The gas is more worth it than this poor excuse of a game.

I daresay Daikatana was more fun when I remember trying it on a friend's PC.

Some of your expectations for this game were WAY too high. Of course it wasn't going to be amazing, there is no way it could have been after its development history. You can point the finger at Gearbox all you want, but 3D Realms is mainly responsible for it.

But hell, I'm getting it anyways. I find the rage surrounding it highly amusing.

Worst Game of the year.

Fixed!

EDIT: To the guy above me, I don't think most of us are raging. Most of us that saw the light from that gawdawful demo aren't paying for this title and lost all desire to play.

Game of the year.

More feedback and such, some of it from outside the USA:

OK i've played for a while and just finished the Duke Burger section of the game which is a fair bit of gameplay in...wow OK where to start, I'll try and keep it simple.

First of all the demo, wow...the demo was absolutely rubbish compared to the actual game so far, honestly I was expecting abject failure after playing the demo and l can safely say that the full game is way better than the demo.

Is the game good? YES
Is the game great or worth 12 years waiting? NO

The graphics are dated there's no way of getting around that, however they don't exactly look terrible, the game has a very clean look to it, the textures are pretty crisp in a lot of the areas and there's an awful lot of unique models filling up the areas, it's not like HL2 where you see the same crate 1000 times, the areas are themed and have good design and you see a lot of custom meshes and textures to support that. Some areas suffer from lack of detail, mainly the larger outdoor areas, there is some 2D backdrops outside going on, the kind of thing we saw in Bulletstorm.

The gameplay is fairly standard run of the mill FPS game, lots of different guns most returning from the original duke, you get to blow shit up and generally kick the crap out of things, the arsenal feels hefty and powerful and generally sounds good as well, no pea shooter noises like in MW2. Along with fighting you have some limited driving sections which you can wizz through quite fast unless you're a total fucking moron like that guy on youtube just constantly bad mouthing the game. There is also some platforming and puzzles a plenty, they tend to be quite varied as well which makes for a good break from shooting things constantly, I certainly didn't feel like I was doing the same thing over and over.

Comedy is golden, there's plenty of it, they did a good job with the infantile humour, witty one liners and even a lot of environmental jokes, I saw a small picture of what looked like women at first on closer inspection looks like 3 men in drag, no doubt some of the developers. Plenty of laugh out loud moments for me so far, losing at pinball, turning on a vibrator in a strip club and watching it buzz across the floor, drawing a big dick on some poor kids book instead of my autograph, and a bunch of other stuff too numerous to mention at this point.

Interactivity is something I liked a lot from the first games, you were able to fiddle with things in the environment, use toilets/lights/camera, activate projectors etc. They've come back with this feeling again, there's a whole load of stuff in the environment you can use, a lot of mini game style things, a lot of which will raise your max health by a little once you've used it which I find is a nice bonus. You can do weights, play pinball, play pool, play air hokey against an NPC, play a load of arcade machines like whack a mole, basket ball. Use all the vending machines for drink snacks, smokes, condoms and er...more...

I went in with realistic expectations, I knew the 12 years had been mostly blown re-doing the same stuff over and over for newer engines and that actual development on this last iteration ended before it was complete and there was a long wait while the company went under, the IP was sold on and finally completed, I think despite that it's overall not too bad so far, I would actually say about an 80% review is fair at this stage, if you're a fan of duke I believe if you go into the game with an open mind and appropriate expectations you'll enjoy it.

I can say if you go into it like that TotalBiscuit guy on youtube, which is heavily bias agaisnt the game you'll find stuff to moan about, you always will. I think his early look at the game was just way off the mark. Actually he's just posted a round up after 5 hours play so I'm going to watch that now, see if he's singing a different tune.

Dude, chill the fuck out. It's just a game. Stop acting like you're owed something.

Randy is that you??? Stop dicking around and get cracking on that dedicated server support you've been hyping...

He is owed $50 worth of entertainment. If he feels its only worth $20,so be it..Me,Im thinking $15 Steam Holiday Sale.

$5 at the most

I am a few hours into the game and I think its decent. However, it pulls a Crysis/Half-Life (Xen areas) with alien environment and totally put me off. The plot during that part was kinda freaky and could be the stuff of nightmares.

I've just watched the 2nd part of TotalBiscuits, all I can say is this guy is a bit of an idiot. He says things like the bonus health system is inconsistent, no it's perfectly consistent, you get a bonus for interacting with special items for the first time only.

He said the game was brown brown brown, which it's not, there is a big variety of areas which range from the sort of muddy green caverns, bright colourful duke burger, flashy colourful casino.

He also says there's issues with large sections of the game being without enemies, based his video performance (skill wise) I'm not surprised he spends ages running around lost, it's funny for someone who complains about the hint system he sure does actually need it lol. He complains about the linearity of the game then gets lost for 5 minutes driving around in circles

Frosty, if it's not too early I'm going to ask you the magic question:

Do you like this game at $45-$50 (the asking price at present) or do you pretty much recommend people wait for sales and such?

http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1037372055&postcount=107

^^ I think that's TotalBiscuit's follow up after 5 hours of play. He still hates it. Big time.

Frosty: You got my attention. I know you're someone with a pretty low BS tolerance so to see you as fairly happy with the game as you seem to be is worth noting.

Just keep in mind it's his subjective opinion, he seems to think that if a game has linear sections or that if you take control from the player for more than 1/2 a second, or you're not fighting monsters literally every 3 seconds then the game is completely crap, the guy must have ADD or something. If you don't have a soul crushing problem with those things then you can safely ignore about 50% of the negative things he has to say.

I have a fairly low tolerance for BS, the game certainly has its issues don't get me wrong, but this guy makes it out to be an abject failure which it's not. I maintain my position that a review score of 80% that PC gamer gave it, is fairly accurate.

The only part of the game I really do not like was the boss with 3 titties, I failed that a lot of times where as the rest was a breeze, the mechanics were easy to work out but I was getting one shotted a LOT and couldn't work out why, eventually the hints in the loading screen informed me that the floating brain monsters can return rockets back at you so do not shoot at them with the rocket launcher, switch out to the shotgun and deal with them, they take more hits but you dont run the risk of dying later on in the boss fight.

If anyone has any questions, just fire away, I will try and answer.
