It’s a scary internet out there, it really is. Dasient, an anti-malware firm claims that more that 1 million websites were classified as malicious in Q2 2010, a sharp increase from previous years.

Web based attacks have been one of the fastest growing areas of malicious activity in recent years, as more applications migrate to the Web and as users engage deeply with social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

So if there are 1 million known domain TLDs serving malware, why doesn't someone get crackin' to shutting them down?

Because people might want to go and get some malware? Hopefully microsoft get the legal whatever to do what they were going to do, then that may be allowed.

Every website ive ever been served malware from either attempted or successfully served malware through advertisements and infected ad servers which serve auto launching PDF files. Stopping the automatic opening of PDF files within a browser is just one way to combat a small portion of the threat out there.

MS will never do anything about this. The main reason why the malware exists is because a good deal of the users these days know where the on/off button is and that about sums it up.

There is even malware out there that claims it removes malware :) while most people cant make that distinction, we can.

MS in all it's wisdom doesn't protect users by nailing shut it's operating system instead it opens the floodgates and in promotion of their own malware protection to suffice users needs while in reflection the biggest problems have been with MS own applications (now it seems that Adobe is one of the problems).

It is a never ending story hence people should start using Linux because Linux does offer a stable system without usage that doesn't require a day job of updating (and keeping track of them).

This is the only thing I can agree with in these responces. Most users are dumb when it comes to anything other than on/off and visiting web-pages. At last the general population finally has been trained not to open random file attatchments in email......but this is probably partly why viri and malware have made a bigger influx into the websites.

When user infections slow from random web-infections, there will be a rise another area I'm sure. Cat and Mouse.

Interesting. But a firm that makes their money through the existence of malware releasing a statement that claims malware is more dangerous than other... well, that's kind in their best interest, isn't it?

It might be true, but either way it's profitable for them to increase the general fear of malware.

"more dangerous than ever"

Ugh, wtb a ten second edit option for typos. Or preview by default instead of submit for the news section... :)

Really, so I don't need to watch the release mailing lists of postfix, dovecot, mysql, php, apache, bind, etc etc etc.. on a daily basis to see the new updates all of which contain bug fixes and commonly for exploits anymore? WOW Linux never looked better!

If you don't run a server that is accessible from the outside why worry ?
Linux has one simple feature well implemented that is you dont run as root (administrator). In all those years that MS attempted an OS i have yet to see them implement it well enough.

And yes there are security updates for Linux :)
