Not sure but I take your point. I've also been looking at the ST4000VN000 NAS series drives. I think they'll match up well. In truth I haven't got to the point of looking closely at HDD brands and models yet. So far I've only decided that I'd like:
- quieter, power efficient drives: 5900 spin...
Hi,
I'm building a server at home to function as a NAS, amongst other things. The configuration I want to get to (feel free to comment/advise) is a raid-50 array made up of 10 Seagate 4TB ST4000VM000 drives. I won't do this immediately and plan to start out with a smaller raid-5 array.
Some...
Hi All,
I'm not normally one for starting or indulging in speculative threads I may be starting one here. So apologies in advance to those that don't appreciate that kind of thing. I can't help it.
Anyway, I'm mulling over whether to wait for sandybridge laptops and motherboards to appear...
And what has this interjecture got to do with what the OP is asking?
::shudders:::
Get off your high horse and stop trying to interfere with people's right of free speech. You're also talking utter nonsense. Otherwise, if you had a worthwhile point I might give it more thought...
Ha, thanks for pointing out my error. It never occurred to me that an OP might contradict the apparent purpose of the opening post and therefore the drive behind the whole thread.
This thread is a confused mess. I'll step away before I misinterpret much more;)
Regards,
Dave
Hi,
Your use case seems reasonable. You don't sound like you're looking for out and out performance, just a boost in boot time, desktop snappiness and app launch time.
However, what you've just described is why i want to go 17". Anything smaller and you have no room for maneouver down the...
Not true any more with the re-engineered models. That said, it depends on what CPU you load up with and your own personal taste when it comes to track pads.
The envy is a quality piece of kit. HP's biggest issue right now is with their screen resolutions. I've personally turned to the new...
Hi,
I'm very close to buying a new laptop. It'll either be an Envy or one of the new Dell XPS machines. But I'm not looking for people to tell me which machine I should go for.
Instead, I'm trying to decide whether I should purchase with 4GB of RAM, ie. the default, or go for more. I can use...
Hi,
I'm mulling over a laptop purchase and am wondering whether to go for an i5 or i7 processor. Can someone give me an idea of the performance differential between the two processors please? Is it small enough to make the power efficiency of the i5 attractive?
Thanks in advance for any...
Hi,
I am hands on but really don't consider the laptop market to offer enough credible choice to make diy worthwhile to me(yet). This machine isn't intended to be a play thing. It will be a high performance and predominantly business oriented workhorse.
Right now I'm leaning towards HP Envy...
Hi,
I'm after a new laptop and have some requirements that I'm hoping users here can comment on and assist with recommendations etc:
- Not a small screen: 15-17": edge to edge display preferred, high quality(bright) and non-reflectve
- Screen resolution conducive to software development...
Yes, I have hot-swap bays. But what I think is being "bought" are the rail screws. If you already have them (I do), then any mounting system should work.
Yeah, I've pointedthis out to ASUS and suggested they push for better USB support in their next bios release. I've now installed from CD.
Regards,
Dave
It can be either. Also, USB-Stick. It simply specifies how the device will be "seen" by the OS.
But because floppy booting is different to HD booting a USB-FDD bios setting will prevent usb hd type images booting.
That's what I've determined from looking into this some more.

Hi,
I've installed ESXi 4 to USB but have hit issues that I need to understand. That is, the bios isn't detecting the usb stick as a bootable device and is passing straight through to HDD boot.
Relevent info:
Mobo: ASUS Z8PE-D18 flashed to latest bios release
Bios Config: USB detecting...
Hi,
I'm building a dual socket system right now on an ASUS Z8PE-D18. I'm using 2 Ultra-120 rev C for cooling (overkill but I don't trust anyone else's products). My query is that the Thermalright's come with a socket 1366 backplate but the ASUS mobo also has a backplate which is preventing the...
I'm also slightly concerned by the risk of vertically mounting 2 heavyweight coolers on a server mobo. I suspect they're weren't designed with the expectation of mounting two big Thermalright coolers on them.

Dave
Hi,
I'm about to purchase an SSD to go into a Lian V2K. How are SSDs meant to be mounted? I assume Lian Li offer some kind of driver bay converter?

Dave
Hi,
I have 2 E5530 processors on order and need to provide for cooling. Can anyone recommend a good but quiet cooler? Indeed, given that dual socket configurations can't be overclocked can I passively cool them?
If so, with what? Clearly, I'm looking for a cool but quiet workhorse...
I'm not asking in order to save money, though it is a fringe benefit. Rather I'm wondering whether virtualized environments like vware are sensitive to memory bandwidth. That is where AMD's operons are particularly strong.
Regards,
Dave
Hi,
On consideration, the performance requirements of a virtualized environment strike me as being different enough that I need to reconsider my choice of CPU for my server build. That is, the characteristics of a virtualized environment may mean that it's not a no brainer to go with intel...
A feature that I like about the PC-P80 is the removable/washable dust filters. is this the only Lian-Li case that is so convenient in this regard? I say that cos the PC-P80 design is a bit busy for my liking - plus my son would likely never leave the thing alone with all the blue lighting etc.
Hi All,
Between now and Christmas I expect to be buying a higher end spec laptop. I will probably use this for some time as a development and gaming workhorse. Can anyone advise me of moves in the mobile cpu and chipset space that may be relevant to my musings, ie. are there technology step...
Hi,
I'm evaluating investing in a Xeon processor (5500 Series) & mobo. What isn't clear to me is where Intel are on their roadmap as regards introducing new models and potential socket changes etc.
I don't want to be investing in the trailing edge of this particular technology curve if i...
Key things for me from a case are:
- E-ATX form factor support
- Design Ergonomics (airflow and filtering, ease of maintenance/use)
- Expanadability
- Flexibility, e.g. Well suited to Water cooling or other adapted use cases, can install SSDs without having them sitting or hanging in the...
Hi,
I'm being wooed to consider purchasing an ASUS ZPE-D12X mobo. Can anyone give me an idea of how (in)capable this mobo is? How does it stack up against some of the supermicro boards?
I'm considering this because I've decided to build my own server and house it in a tower. That has got me...
Hi All,
I am about to build a second Tower system to accompany my existing Lian Li enclosed setup. Of course, I'm thinking to go Lian Li again. But due dilligence is never a bad thing so I am opening myself up to alternatives...
That is, what case would people recommend for a dual socket...
