OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Thanks for the insight. After inputting the eval key I went to the update menu and I did not see any options for downloading the pro versions of Napp-It. The main menu does show that I'm in a day trial so it looks as if the key was installed successfully. I'll give it another try tonight...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Gea, I have a few questions for you mainly around subscriptions and licensing. First and foremost I want to thank you for napp-it and everything you've done for the community. I recently read your performance paper surrounding the new versions of OmniOS and Solaris and SMB2.1. It motivated me...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Can anyone point me to cheapest 10Gb card supported by OmniOS? Right now I'm looking at Intel X520's but I'm wondering if there is anything cheaper. Thanks!

What is the prefered ZFS OS Now?

It's interesting you say that as I use Mac's but I have my ZFS storage on a separate OmniOS box. I connect using iSCSI, NFS and AFP and I have no issues with iTunes. What are the benefits you get from running it local?

WD says RED drives can reach 60C

Nice you got me on that one. I by all means meant as long as your using a HD within the manufacturer specifications you should be fine. I think a lot of people assume sustained levels of 50C will increase HD failure rate but given the information from the reports from Backblaze and Google I...

WD says RED drives can reach 60C

But the spec says just that, it can operate at temperatures up to 70C. The idea that heat kills hard drives is just a theory not really a fact. A good read: Hard Drive Temperature – Does It Matter?

recommendations for a VMware server with DAS

I think you need to consider tiered storage. I’m not quite sure what your data set is going to be beyond VM’s but I would suggest a separate pool of SSD’s for the VM’s and SATA or SAS storage for everything else. If this is a work enterprise server then by all means use...

Tips for creating and maintaining offline backup?

I backup my data to two locations. The first location is a smaller HP Microsever that I keep upstairs while my large array is in the basement. The second location is my brother’s house. He has a small Microserver as well that he uses as his main NAS which he has afforded me some space on. We...

Critique my FreeNAS build list, please.

Everyone has a preference for what drives they prefer or which drives they deem as the best or most reliable. You can't really say XXX brand is the best as each hard drive series is different. I have two great reads for you. The first is from Backblaze where they give reliability stats in...

    Virtualized network discussion

The Unitrends VM does not need a network connection to the DMZ to backup DMZ VM's. All of the connections happen via vCenter/ESXi. As long as the Unitrends box can see the vCenter/ESXi server you should be good.

Use a backup product that's virtual that can connect directly to the datastore, like Unitrends.

How much power is your server drawing?

I'm just trying to confirm what your saying here. Your using 20 drives and with 18 spun down and your only pulling 67 watts? What are you using to cool these drives? What are your drive temps? Also how many kWh are you using total at your house to be hitting Tier4 pricing? It almost seems...

Supermicro SC846 4U JBOD Replacement Fans

I have the SM CSE-837E16-RJBOD1 3U JBOD and the hot swap fans are very loud and it's very annoying. I plan to swap them out at some point but the only fans that I've seen that offer similar static pressure with less noise are very expensive. I was using a set of 120mm that I had laying around...

How much power is your server drawing?

houkouonchi, Very few have personally bought as many disks as you but for what it's worth I've had great success with Seagates. Over the 25+ that I've owned in my lifetime I've had maybe 2 failed drives. I noticed that Backblaze had reliability with issues with Seagate 1.5TB drives like...

I'm going to have to disagree with you man. The only reason those bays are open is because I just pulled disks from my JBOD. I've owned this JBOD for over a year and a half and these disks for almost a year. I assure you they have never ran at 25 degrees celsius in this enclosure under any...

DS1812+ 8x2tb Greens dying out ...looking to replace them with 4x4tb blacks.

I second this comment as well in regards to reliability between manufactures. In regards to my criteria for purchasing disks I have different priorities depending on the type of disk. Mechanical drive: 1. Price 2. Warranty 3. Speed SSD: 1. Speed 2. Price 3. Warranty Discrepancies...

Fed up with current home network, need opinion on plan

Dan, I think your taking this a little bit too far man. I said "other features" so you can do research on your own to figure out why a controller based setup makes sense. I've said this a number of times but for the roaming, ease of manageability and expandability features alone makes this...

Fed up with current home network, need opinion on plan

Like I said in my last post it goes beyond just roaming. A single console to manage the AP's is nice amongst other features. If the OP is planing on using more then one AP now or in the near future is makes sense to buy into the Unifi system. And yes of course Unifi supports multicast. You...
