Yes Steam puts some lines in the registry, and yes it installs a service, But you can still put it on a flash drive and it will automatically update registry and services when ran and name/password entered. However the read/write speed as Bender mentioned may slow things down considerably...

Not for sure but I think it is possible. I keep Steam on a separate partition from my windows and whenever I do a windows reinstall Steam gives me no problems. Just enter my name and password, good to go... Ply

Sounds like the mobo chipset is getting to hot. The northbridge/igp will do just what you're describing if it overheats. Try putting a fan on it or check for proper seating of the heatsink... Ply

I think there are three versions of starforce now. The publisher confirmed that the version of starforce used on United does not install any drivers, registry entries, yadda yadda. It puts nothing on your system. Could still be the cd check mechanism they use though. Yeah the Steam version...
