I am very happy with my JVCs that were all the rage a little while ago and I saved some dough. The HA-RX900 is the model I have. I have had high end AudioTechnicas, Grados, AKGs, and BeyerDynamics in the past. These are definitely worth the minimal cash I spent.
These go for about $82 shipped on ZZF and NewEgg. This is NIB, never opened. I had some wild hair up my ass one day and started ordering parts for a gaming rig which I wouldn't use to any of its potential. I'm asking $70 shipped via USPS Priority with insurance. I take check or MO. If you have...
Get that Yammie mentioned earlier. Grab some of these here X series speakers and a sub. Get a pair of mtm towers for the fronts, the bookshelves for the rears, an mtm for the center and a sub, you're gonna pay a decent chunk for the receiver and the speakers and get an excellent sounding system...
I went a bit vintage. I got a pair of Baby Advent IIs off of Craigslist for about $10 and have a Yamaha R-70 receiver which I traded a headphone amp for. I just do music, not gaming but the Chaintech AV-710 has a nice 2 channel output and I picked that up for about $30.
OK folks, as I said, I bought a pair and was quite impressed.
I have Marantz TA-100 A/V receiver from the '80s, 100wpc RMS. I have a Sony SCD-CE595 as my source. These are incredible for imaging. Also, the sound isn't bad at all. However, they don't compare to the big Fisher 3-ways I have...
Thanks for the very thorough review guys. I am a local computer repair tech and while I don't build computers for friends I do recommend they read [H] and I also make recommendations based on [H]'s reviews.
I didn't even know they existed. Only way to tell if they're any good is by auditioning. Never really tried anything Plantronics other than at my phonemonkey jobs. I freaking hate being a phonemonkey.

That's a DT770 with the living shit modded out of it... Get it! Oh, and ask MisterX about an M3 or maybe go to www.rockhopperaudio.com for it.
I don't do movies so that is of course fine. As far as I know it's all good for it. I am going to audition it on Saturday. www.classicaudio.com shows it's worth either $102 or $350. I'm going to have it serviced by a buddy of mine if I decide to grab it.
I had no problem using my Chaintech AV-710 for two channel. The DAC for the other channels though is crap. The rear channel DAC though is superior to those on an Audigy2. As far as 3D sound goes, I never really tried it. For $23 though it's great.
Has anyone heard this piece of equipment? I have a chance to get one for $99. It looks pretty interesting. Also, I'm getting some Sansui SS-20 vintage headphones... why? Just because.
I have a pair of Alessandro MS-1s>HeadRoom Total Airhead>Cardas 12 inch mini to mini interconnect>AudioSolutions portable CD player. All in all this system is pretty decent for classic rock.
The game may not take advantage of things like Creative's 3D crap but the onboard will definitely take up more CPU cycles than an add-in just to get sound output. So, an add-in card would most likely increase performance because it will free up more CPU cycles for the game.
EDIT: Sound...
Yeah... earlier the comment about 'next to nothing' was for good reason. $400 for a full 5.1 set is pretty much nil. If you want good sound you're looking at least $400 per satellite. Oh, for 7.1 just a thought but you may want to try something like the M-Audio Revolution. Yes I know it doesn't...
Well, soundstage is just the perceived location of the sound being presented to you. Like the Beyerdynamic DT770-80s that I had had a very deep and wide soundstage allowing me to spot people perfectly in gaming. Whereas the AKG K271S that I had had a very wide but shallow soundstage. I think...
