I did a sg31g2 with an e8400 and a 9600gt, 320g hd, 4gb ram for less than $1k. Pretty sweet system if you ask me. Even threw in blu-ray and still made under budget. edit did not know (poor reading comp) you wanted a monitor and input devices..still i am happy with what i got so you may consider...

you have to get the mighty mouse, either wired or not. it takes a day or two to get used to but the squeeze application switching is a must, not to mention the ball scroll wheel. Personally, I still use only one mouse button, but there's also the contextual "right" click, too.

let's buy a 24" imac and run HL2 at native resolution, 4xaa 16xas with everything else maxed out and see how flawed that is. Asking for apple to take their video cards seriously isn't totally unreasonable. Right now the lack of horsepower in the 24" imac is keeping me from buying one.

I think that upgradeable video on the imac and more options for video cards would "feed the beast" as well. I'm buying a 24" imac as soon as I can get a decent video card in there. Or, I'll buy a macpro in a year, since that's how long it will take for me to afford one.
