If you're buying it off CL, I'd be more concerned with him showing up and taking your money for the Drobo, and leaving you with nothing. Be sure to do this in a public area, and maybe take a laptop or do it at a library, and run diags on the device to make sure it is 100% working. (All the...
Excellent job as always, Danny. I was wondering if you could pick me out a mobo and proc. I prefer Intel, and any mobo with Gbe is fine by me. I was going to go with 4 gigs of G. Skill mem, and if you could recommend PSU for 12 drives, I would be stoked.
Budget for just the case/mobo and some non-RAID controllers. I intend to use WHS or Win2k8 RC2, not sure yet.
I have about 8 drives, and would like capability to expand. I was looking at something along the lines of 4 gigs ram, and preferably NOT a rackmount, I've priced around and those...
Can someone recommend me a case (room for 15+ 3.5 inch hds), proc, ram, and a PSU? Im interested in setting either WHS or Win2008 RC2 as a fileserver. Don't need a true RAID card, just going to use the OS's pooling.
Forgot to add a budget of around 500-600 USD. Looking to add about 8 hds...

I was wondering what you all were thinking about this Fileserver. I Intend to...
Thanks for all the suggestions.
Cyclone: let me know if you have any updates on your printer, that is the one I think i will get (though, might be hard to find, especially if you found it at a thrift store).
There is no newer model of the HP LaserJet4m? or what would be the upgraded/newest...
Just a black/white.
Hows that HP working for you? Clear text (going to be printing lots of that) and is it fast? Ahhh, I just looked at it, its a multifunction, which I like, but its takes cartridges like an ink jet. I would like the multi/function but not an ink jet. Those cartridges are...
I was familiar with the HP laserjet 4m, and was wondering if there is now a better model to buy. I have a fairly in flexible (+/-10 bux) 125 USD for a laserjet printer. What would be a great option for a college student, who can do a lot printing.
Wan't doing much else (CPU-wise) wasn't an array build, just shuttling over some files. Have existing harddrives (mis-matched) and was looking into ZFS, as I hear it can take harddrives of all sizes.
Fellow [H]ardOcp'rs
I am looking into establishing a sortve RAID5/zfs box. I have approx 1k USD, closer to 750 would be nicer, broke ass college student. My laptop lacks usb3, fw, and a pci/pcmcia slot. I have currently 2x1.5tb, 4x400 tb. I was only looking for some sort of enclosure/case with...
Gentlemen (and women),
I have a Fujitsu N3530 Lifebook (sig) and its been having overheating issues lately. I used to be able to play FarCry all night long to my heart's content, and now, 45 minutes of heavy gaming will cause the laptop to shut off. After some analysis, its overheating.
I...
Yes. I love the program, its a fantastic replacement for Windows' cut / copy / paste. You can resume transfers, change cache size, and better CRC checking. Its a must have for file transfers over a network. And its freeware! :D
Dunno about PCI-E but they have a sweet PCI-X one that runs just fine in a standard PCI slot (albeit at the reduced speeds). The SAT2-MV8 SATA. I thought they were slated to do a PCI-E revision of it, but not sure.
Have no experience with doing it myself, but all in all it depends on how valuable the data on that drive is. You could probably find the same hard drive for under 40 bux on ebay or craigslist, but the firmware revisions, and PCB revisions, would be difficult to ascertain, especially from a...
Also, try the freeware lightweight copying / moving program known as teracopy. http://www.codesector.com/teracopy.php
It lets you tweak some cache settings to enhance copying, and is VASTLY superior to the built-in copying / pasting methodology. Its a lot faster, and is resumable in case of...
Should be -- as long as its not a word or a simple variation of a word. Its very difficult to crack open an encrypted archive, and the one's I've seen are simple brute force / dictionary crackers.
You're going to lose the data on the RAID0 stripe in reconfiguring that. Best way would be to back up the data to your JBOD area, and with another drive, RAID1 two matching drives, and restore over your data.
Sounds like since its in your autoexec.bat, you will need to boot from a floppy or bootable cd, and either REM out that line, or simply remove it from your autoexec.bat. Hope you have access to another computer to make the floppy/cd-rom.
If you can't slave it (run it as a non boot drive) in your system, as in it gives you massive BIOS errors, RMA the drive, its fried. If you can boot, hotswap and drop in the drive, does it show under device manager at all?
Should be able to, SATA specs indicate hotswap capability, but check your controller's ability for it.
To fix your laptop, see if you can get the laptop to boot from the OS's CD/DVD (with the harddrive in there) , and load the repair console, after booting from the disc.
I'm so confused about the RAM, its gotta have only a single slot, and i'm not aware anyone makes a 2 1/2 gig RAM module.
edit: crap, double post, my bad.

D'oh. New EEE model, 1002H. Seems identical to the 1000HE, a slight bit slimmer, a bit lighter, but its a smaller battery than the 1000HE.
Asus is rocking the # skus / month battle, just wish there was more of a difference between...
As far as the connector goes, I would salvage the failed one, and splice the leads from the new fan onto that.
Not sure about sizing issues, though your best bet would be to simply measure the failed one, or stuff in one that isnt the right size, but fits anyways.
Get a delta fan, it...
Just guessing here, but I think that even though its a good deal (especially with the upgraded RAM, NIC, and HSF). 400 for a used netbook is a bit high. :shrugs: i'll trade you my new 1000HE for it, I upgraded the RAM to 2 gigs.
