Safe max. voltage for Wolfdale on air

The only proper answer to this (ultra generic) question is "whatever Intel says the recommended voltage is". No one here has the experience with a sufficiently large sample to make any recommendations about "safe" voltage. Everyone here- myself included- could chime in with whatever they...

Change from Wolfdale to Yorkfield worth it ?

Take your 290 pounds and buy some solid state drives...there's a difference you'll notice. BTW, your info about the q9550's overclockability is somewhat naive. I just did what you're thinking of- went from e8400/ 4GB RAM to q9550/ 8GB RAM- and it's NOT as easy as just changing the FSB. The...

    Windows 7 IE8 stopped working

IE seems to continually hard lock on my Win7 install also. I just kill the process in Task Manager and IE will offer to restart and go back to the point it froze before. Usually it's good for a few more minutes and then locks up again. Fortunately, IE isn't my default browser so this bug...

How to setup RAID in Windows 7?

First, disconnect the 1TB drive...either the power or data cable will do. Now, in the RAID BIOS, configure the three drives into the array you want (volume size, stripe size, etc) and save. Reboot back into BIOS and set your RAID volume as first in the hard disk boot priority. Boot to the...

    Vista sleep problems...

There are also a few settings in Windows that need attention to solve this problem. You need to disable Hibernation. In Control Panel, go to Power Management and disable "hybrid sleep" (if it appears as an option). In Device Manager, open your Network Adaptor, go to the Power Management tab...

How to remove a damaged hard drive screw?

Yes. With all the other screws removed, tilt the hard drive in the cage which should either cause a gap under the screw head so you can wedge it or cock the screw in the hole and allow it to unthread while being turned. You may have to remove any other drives in the cage to release any side...

    Reverse ATX cases...

He may have meant "expensive" in terms of time and consumables (i.e., cutting disks) compared to using a proper tool. 99% of PC modding is simple metalwork...go to any metal shop and see if they have a Dremel. Betcha they don't.

    Fan Life. They Eventually Die?

You make it sound like it's a given that squirting a few drops of oil will revive the fan for years...how can you be so sure? My take on this is that a fan is a cheap part that performs a critical task...the consequences of fan failure far outweigh it's replacement cost and having already...

    Fan Life. They Eventually Die?

Maybe on Nigerian etail sites they do but I've never seen a computer fan that cost anywhere near that amount. High quality PC fans are so cheap I don't understand the desire to extend their life...if a fan is in question, I'd just as soon replace it and not worry rather than attempt to eke...

    TJ07 SATA cable management?

Seems to me there are two main factors that determine how nicely the SATA cables will be run... -Port orientation on the board (horizontal or vertical) -Length of cables Obviously, neither is TJ-07 specific (so, sorry for the generic answer) but these two things can/will make all the...

    Fan Life. They Eventually Die?

Fans are a mechanical device and every mechanical device fails sooner or later. Most likely cause is bearing degradation...bearing wears and presents too much resistance for the motor to overcome at startup.

Problems Installing Windows 7. Seem to be the only one in the world :(

Seems to me that you have a hardware, not software, problem. I'd approach it from that perspective and start testing RAM, HDD(s), CPU, etc. till you either isolate the bad component or determine that all is good. If you decide that hardware is not at fault, try installing a plain vanilla XP...

'Safely Remove Hardware' in Windows 7

I'm unsure if you can specifically designate a drive as "removable" or not. I do know that on my board whether a drive is listed depends on which controller it is connected to. The HDDs and optical are all on an Intel ICH10R controller- which is running RAID- and none of them (even the...

    Post Your Workstation 2009!

Yes, I am. No special multi-display capabilities that I can see beyond the rudimentary ones in the beta-Nvidia driver/control panel that's included in the OS. Although my PC didn't "chug" running Vista, Win7 is decidedly faster and uses @ 25-30% less RAM at idle. I never hated Vista but...

    Windows 7 Beta Goes Public

Yes, it does. I have it installed on two PCs already. On the older Opteron/s939 platform I needed NO drivers after install- it had them all and even went and found the printer drivers when I plugged it in. The new(er) PC- e8400/P45/RAID 0 array- only needed a Creative driver to be completely...

    Balance caseventilation a myth?

I think this would depend entirely on the temp differential. Your example with the patio door shows that the concept is valid but is probably so noticeable because the outside air is much cooler than the room ambient. The colder the air, the heavier it is (and the reverse is true as well), so...

    Balance caseventilation a myth?

This is the sort of nonsense that casemakers are fond of showing as examples of how air flows... In my experience, this is almost completely wishful thinking. Notice how the front fan's airstream (supposedly) turns hot after passing the hard drive cage and then finds it's way all the way...

    Balance caseventilation a myth?

For the most part I think "positive/negative pressure" and "case airflow" are, if not outright myths, then at least, wishful thinking. The average case, with average casefans, doesn't move enough air to build up noticeable pressure- not to mention that the average case is so riddled with...

Why can't someone make a case like this?

You don't need a traditional "cage" for SSD's. Producing no heat or vibration, they can just be affixed to any vacant flat surface and be fine. The original Stacker (by far the best of the series, IMO) had the front I/O panel of your dreams- not only front mount mounted, it could be placed...

    Painting a steel case

I'd go with a spray can over an airbrush. Be aware that flat black is just about the flimsiest coating you can apply and you'll have to be very careful during assembly not to mar/scratch it. A satin finish is more durable and I find it generally matches the rest of the case finish pretty well.

    e8400 Overclocking Fun!

Using a Gigabyte P35-DS4, both my e8400's have been much happier running 500 x 8 rather than 440 x 9. The first one- the golden chip I should never have let go- was 10 hour OCCT stable at 1.265v while the new one requires 1.35v. This might just be a quirk of the board/chip pairing but there...

Hard to say as I never used the stock drive racks. I removed those right away to make room for the watercooling bits. I can say that a Coolermaster 4in3 drive unit (stock piece in the Stackers) works wonderfully in the TJ...I hardly ever hear my 5 drives- even during defrag. Of course, the...

    Q9300 idle temps

The first thing to do would be get a more accurate temp monitoring app...RealTemp would be my recommendation. Read the documentation and go through the calibration procedure. Secondly, I'd start testing your chip's vCore. My Gigabyte wants to use 1.2v as the default but in fact, the chip...

    Q9300 - What O/C did you get?

She's watercooled- albeit simply. Swiftech ApogeeDrive (pump/block combo) and a PA 120.3 radiator. These 45nm chips run pretty cool, presumably due to the low voltage, so you don't need to get extravagant.

Q9300 @ 7.5 x 441 with vCore of 1.175 (in BIOS). 8 GB of g.Skill PC8000 @ 2v (5-5-5-15 with 2x multi). All other voltages left "Auto". Will not boot to desktop above 444FSB at these settings. Removing two sticks of RAM and even switching to 2 x 1GB of OCZ memory (the stuff that Microcenter...

New Copy of Vista with "Windows.old" ???

New Copy of Vista with "Windows.old" ???

This is a good example of how Vista seems to have changed things for no apparent good reason. Installing XP, after you picked the target partion/drive the next screen displayed format options (including "leave it alone"), so you were essentially forced to consider what to do. Vista skips...

New Copy of Vista with "Windows.old" ???

It's not what you did this time, it's what you didn't do. When you reach the screen that shows the available drives and asks where you want to install the OS you can highlight the partition/drive and use the "format" option to erase the current install. This eliminates the "windows.old" folder...

    XP 32 Vista 32 & Vista 64 Triple Boot?

What you want is easily doable but I'd also agree that just XP and Vista x64 are all that's necessary. Be sure to install XP first and then begin the Vista install from within the XP os...that way the Vista bootloader will automatically integrate the XP install (it will call it a "legacy OS").
