either way, you are the man!!! I whole heartedly appreciate all you guys' suggestions, and mostly yours Guerrilla! ;)
if you are ever in south florida, lunch is on me! :)
absolutely!! I'm staying away from IDE from now on.
and tahks to you too!
well, I'll be damned!!!! I think I got it.
yesterday I went ahead, and removed the IDE dvd drive, and installed a SATA DVD drive.....and looks like it is working. It installed fine! There must have been a problem with either the IDE controller or the dvdrw's driver and their...
yes, the XP disc is on a CD, and the Vista is on DVD. It "copied" the files fine, I assume....but who knows, you may be right. I bought a SATA dvd drive, so I'm gonna try that tonite.
yes, I have vista with SP1.
as mentioned earlier, I tried 1 stick, 2 sticks, and tried each stick...
yes, I meant Bios.
I didn't try raid, but I tried AHCI and IDE in both enhanced and compatible mode. I also tried creating an RAID0 array, and it still behaved the same on all 3 cases.
gonna try a different DVD drive, and Videocard this afternoon
so Asus P45 boards are no good?
I'm gonna get a SATA drive this afternoon, take everything apart, and install it externally and see what happens
I WILL PAYPAL someone $30 if we can get this to work!
I just spoke to Asus tech support...they told me it could be the e8400. They said try to put it in Performance mode vs enhanced, and see.
I doubt this is it, but I'll give it a try
On the DVD drive Issue:
It is an IDE drive (connected via IDE cable to IDE controller on MB)... It installs XP fine, which is why I believed it is not the drive, but could it be that it is incompatible with Vista? I don't think that's the case because it ran Vista32bit in the past.
So should I...
JESUS F(@&( ING CHRIST!!!!!!!!! :mad::mad:
I've tried just about everything I can possible try without luck!!! arrrrrrrrghhhh. I just redid a memtest for 6 hours, and memory passes.
I bought a brand new P5Q-E, and yet STILL does the same freaking thing!!!!
now what? if it's the...
thanks for replies guys.....I've tried the following as well:
a) used 3 different drives, one by one....same issue (hangup)
b) i removed all usb/floppy/etc connectors, and still same behavior
c)i've tried RAID, AHCI, and even did a RAID0, and again all three had same behavior at the same...
i have an IDE dvd drive, not a sata dvd.
yes, it is vista ultimate sp1, and I'm running in IDE mode, not AHCI.
dont know what else to try...i'm sooooo frustrated
i have to believe it is the mobo incompatibility....I've tried everything! new HD's, new install CDs, new Sata cables, and now, I just tried some new RAM (Corsair XMS2 pc2-6400).
i have to believe it is the mobo somehow
well....i may have spoken too soon on the quick format issue..i may have pressed regular format by mistake. I formated the second drive, and it took seconds.
do you guys think that copying the files onto the HD, and then running setup that way may work?
well I'll be damned!
I just installed XP pro SP3, and it installed fine....no hangups, etc. Then I tried to install Vista, figuring that perhaps the drives being formatted and all, would work... alas no such luck!
it is obviously not a HW issue at this point, right? perhaps memory...
this is sooooo wierd and frustrating. So I tried the latest BIOS and nothing. I unplugged all drives except one, and tried each one separately, and nothing! same hangup.
so now I'm trying windows XP pro to see if it is successful, and it going ok so far, BUT, it asked me to format the new...
yeah, the 3rd drive is my "data" drive. I have one drive for OS/apps, one for data, and one as "backup". Does having 3 drives become a bad thing?
here is what I've tried so far (BIOS in default...no OC):
a) Removed 2 x 1 GB sticks (from DIMM2 and DIMM4 slots)
b) Forced Bios Timings to memory 4-4-4-12 (as oem says) and 2.0 Vdimm
c) tried a different install disk of Vista x64
in all 3 cases, it did the same thing.....it hangs up...
:(
new system:
e8400
Asus P5Q Pro
4GB Crucial Ballistix PC2-6400
3 x SATA.
I've tried both Vista ultimate 32bit and x64 with same results:
it starts copying installation files and bar finishes, and then the 1st graphical screen appears (with the mouse icon). After several seconds...
exactly! it HAD a reputation for poor power supplies....the last couple, specially these TT's are some of the best if not the best you can get, for the money and modularity:

if it wasn't for the "aestetics" score of 6, it would have romped....
thanks...yeah, I gotta do some cleaning of my wires and I'll be good. I'm waiting on some low noise case fans, and then I'll do it.
heck no. Scythe INF was a breeze to install....just press on 4 push knobs! :) Can't get any easier than that....no screws behind the mobo, nothing.
Yeah...
Hey Mentok....here is yet another update man!!
I loosened the timings a little, up'd the Vcore and Vdimm, and squeezed a little more out of this sucker!
User Name: ssabripo (my real name is "shervin" :) )
Stability: 4h+ Dual 1M SuperPI + Orthos small FFT+Orthos Blend (Max temp @ 63degree...
uhm.....yeah, I think I'm gonna go ahead and disagree with your there bud! :o
dunno where you get your numbers from, or how you come to such opiniated conclusions from, but as of today, the Scythe infinity is one of the best, if not the best Air cooled solution...
where do you get that conclusion??? the Infinity is far superior than its little brother Ninja, and arguably the best Air cooler out there

WOW....so guys, check this out:
I added one more fan (80mm) to the back of the PC (so now I have two fans blowing out, one blowing in, and one 120mm on the heatsink), and additionally, I tie wrapped some of the cables for slightly better air flow.....
...well guess what! my system is a...
Yup...2nd time in two weeks that the FETs right by the wi-fi card f#ck up on me!!
so the moral of the story is, boys and girls, DO NOT MAX OUT YOUR FSB core voltage unless you know exactly what the heLL you are doing!!! :o
well guys, I tried to go to 500fsb and for the 2nd time i've fried another Mobo Mosfet!!!
geezus, you would think that Asus would do something about the freaking NB voltage regulation....gadaamit! :o
anyways, got my new mobo last nite, and trying to get back to my 3.304 setting...
thanks guys.....refreshing to know most everyone here is pretty cool :)
here is my latest tweak.....I think I'll keep it :D ...not bad for an ugly cased overpowered rig:
dont sweat it guys....I got tough skin. It don't bother me a bit.....seems like he is gonna end up being one of those grumpy old @ss people that you laugh at when he is older :p
this man speaketh the truth!! :D
exactly what I did....got a $180 e6300, OC'd it to 3.2 stable 24/7, and am on par with any e6600 that hasn't been OC'd too much.
late next year, when the QuadCore's are in a good $300-$400 range, I'll snap one of those and OC it again....
for the time...
hooked on phonics anyone?? :p
1) I have an e6300, not e6400....pretty damn good OC @3.22 for an e6300 on Air, if you ask me
2) 700W is an overkill in numbers, but not in bargain....a good OCZ 550-600W PSU or TT, etc, runs you about $100-$120 with modular cables. The TT 700W cost me...
