ProjectFi is live to everyone and the Nexus 5X is $199 / $249 through it.

For my personal phone, I've been using Net10 on an old "HTC First" phone for the last several years. It uses AT&T's network, and it has issues getting signal inside buildings, while my business iPhone6 (n Verizon) never has problems. Is the primary factor for building penetration the network...

Questions about what "normal" idle and load temps should be for 6700k at stock...

Yeah, fan control. Duh. Ok, so I'm using my mobo to regulate the fan. I had it set up for silence. I replaced the two clickity fans that came with my Fractal R5 with Noctua NF-A14s, and replaced the clickity fan that came with the Evo with a Noctua NF-A15. All PWMs. Just for the heck of...

Questions about what "normal" idle and load temps should be for 6700k at stock...

Using a CM Hyper 212 Evo heatsink with a Noctua NF-A15 pwm fan. I didn't like the sounds coming from the fan that came bundled with the Evo, so I replaced it with the NF-A15.

Questions about what "normal" idle and load temps should be for 6700k at stock...

My 6700k is running at stock speeds, though I did load an XMP profile to get my ram running at the rated speeds. Right now the system idles at around 31c (about 10c above the current room temp), and when running Prime95 26.6 with the Small FTT test for about 11 minutes, the hottest core touches...

Replacing fans in a Fractal Design R5.

Yesterday I tried the Fractal fans on the old rig. They click there too.

Replacing fans in a Fractal Design R5.

I've got an ASUS Maximus VIII Hero motherboard. They've got their fan control software bundled up in the AI3 suite, but the suite is buggy and I took it off my system (and had to do a system restore) due to persistent BSODs on shutdown. I've used the qfan utility in the UEFI to set up a profile...

Replacing fans in a Fractal Design R5.

So, for the case fans, would it be better to get PWM or FLX? Does the PWM fans operate identically to FLX when just using 3 pins, or are they mechanically different? I ask because I'm not 100% sure if I want to use the switch on the case to change fan speeds, or if I want to have the...

Replacing fans in a Fractal Design R5.

Does a PWM controller come into play on non-PWM fans? The Noctua fan and the Fractal fans are not PWM, they're 3 pin fans. I'm not sure how the custom PWM controller would come into play with their non PWM fans.

Replacing fans in a Fractal Design R5.

Aw geeze. Well, I've got my fan controller in the middle position and haven't had any stability issues in the month that I've been running this rig. The only thing odd that I noticed about the built-in fan controller is that if you try and manage to get the switch to stick between settings...

Replacing fans in a Fractal Design R5.

The fans also click when connected to the fan headers on the mobo. As I said, it's subtle. I might be hearing it more because the case is still on t6he desk about 3 feet from my head, and the room is silent. When I plug in the 120 mm Noctua fan from my old rig to either the controler or the...

Replacing fans in a Fractal Design R5.

I just completed a build with a Fractal Design R5 case. The two "Dynamic GP-14" 140 mm fans that shipped with the case operated with a subtle, but constant clicking sound. I contacted Fractal support and they sent me 2 new fans to use with the case, but they do the same thing. Soooo, I'm...

Keybot issues with ASUS Maximus 8 Hero and wireless mouse/keyboard combo

I've tried the ASUS support, but they seem to be useless. The Maximus 8 boards have a usb jack on the back that's dedicated to their "Keybot" function, which allows you to select boot options from a powered-off computer by hitting a key on the keyboard. I've found that if I connect a...

Looking for a good 2 piece speaker set for home PC

I've been using a Logitech Z560 4.1 speaker system for the last 13 or so years. It's been a solid performer for gaming over that time. However, for the past 8 years, I've been almost exclusively been gaming with headphones, and use the speakers for only for occasional music. Due to space...

ASUS z170-a vs Maximus Hero? Is it worth the extra $100?

Yeah, I ended up going with the Hero. Outside of glitchy shipped bios (that were corrected with updates), no complaints so far.

Strangely high temps with an i7-6700k, what did I do wrong?

Hmm, messing around with this some more, I reset the bios and flashed it with the latest revision, then tried the Prime95 test again. Much different results! The red lines are my temps, the faded colored lines are the super-high temps from before the BIOS flash. 10 to 20c difference here...

Strangely high temps with an i7-6700k, what did I do wrong?

Hmm, I tried lowering the CPU core voltage to 1.260, and now the CPU isn't cooking like it was. and I'm actually getting a few points higher in 3d Mark. Prior to this, CPU core voltage was defaulted to auto in the BIOS, and seemed to be hanging around between 1.32 and 1.36 while running under...

New gaming rig build, $1600 budget

I haven't updated this in a bit, but everything's assembled and I'm trying to do the initial validation to make sure it's gonna work. I ended up about $200 under budget, so I'm keeping that in mind as I work on this, in case I feel the need to add an extra fan or change the cooler completely...

Strangely high temps with an i7-6700k, what did I do wrong?

I'm just trying to verify/validate the build to ensure that the components are good and that I didn't make any errors. It seems that coretemp 1.0 r6 (with logging turned on) was causing the freezes. At least, it caused a bsod and the freezing only occurred while coretemp was logging.

How long did it take for you to hit the mid 80s on Prime95?

Strangely high temps with an i7-6700k, what did I do wrong?

No OCing. Ok. No Primes. I'll check out ADIA 64. My idle temps seem to be around 30c. The room's temp is around 21c, and the temp inside the case (from a theromometer that I placed inside the case away from the flow of the fans) is around 22c.

Strangely high temps with an i7-6700k, what did I do wrong?

Ok. Primes is no good. Still the same crap. I'm doing the blended test. Any ideas? The system's desktop also froze and forced me to reboot a few times in the past few hours. The drop off at the end is primes getting turned off.

Strangely high temps with an i7-6700k, what did I do wrong?

Hmm, apparently I flipped out the idles without letting it sit for a while. I popped the cooler off the CPU, wiped off the MX4 on both the cooler and the CPU, used Arctic Clean to clean up both, then reapplied the MX4 as a small dot in the middle, then carefully re-attached the cooler and...

Strangely high temps with an i7-6700k, what did I do wrong?

I just put together a rig using an i7-6700k on an ASUS Maximus Hero VIII and a CM Hyper 212 Evo cooler. I used AC-MX4 thermal paste. I applied a small lentil bean sized dot of the paste, put the cooler on, then removed the cooler to double check the spread. It didn't spread out well, so I...

TDP of CPU vs TDP of cooler, is there a good ratio?

I'm looking to OC it as much as I can while keeping it quiet. I'm going to us a Fractal Refine R5 case, which I know has some sound dampening features. I figured I'd establish a baseline to start at stock speeds, then start moving it up and seeing what my ears can tolerate.

TDP of CPU vs TDP of cooler, is there a good ratio?

The set up will be like this: i7-6700k, stock speeds on up. One GTX 980 ti video card. Fractal Define R5 case, with it's 2 140 mm fans (68.4 CFM each). Default positioning is 1 for exhaust and 1 for intake. The cooler I was going to try is the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO. It's rated for...

TDP of CPU vs TDP of cooler, is there a good ratio?

Does the TDP rating on the cooler usually assume max fan speed? If you were to replace the fan on the 180 watt cooler with one that moved 40% less air, would that make the lower the TDP by 40% too?
  29. D

TDP of CPU vs TDP of cooler, is there a good ratio?

If a CPU has a TDP rating of, say, 91 watts, would a cooler that's rated for 170 watts be better than one that's rated for 140 watts, or does it matter? Is there a ratio of CPU TDP vs Cooler TDP for maximum heat dissipation?

New gaming rig build, $1600 budget

I went ahead and took the plunge on the Hero. Seems like a solid board, based on all the reviews. I think the 500 gb HD should be enough for me. I've currently got 2 SSDs in my rig, a 148 gb and a 223gb, and have 125 gb free between the two of them.

The MSI Gaming M7 seems in the he same price range too, and also has a following.

ASUS z170-a vs Maximus Hero? Is it worth the extra $100?

It doesn't look like there's a bunch of difference between the two boards just by lining up specs vs specs, but I've also read that the ROG stuff is higher quality than the z170-A. Do any owners of either have input? I ask because I'm coming in a few hundred dollars under budget on my...

coil whine at >60fps on new EVGA 980 ti?

I do my gaming on a monitor with a maximum refresh rate of 60. However, Just for kicks, I disabled vsync and tried running Skyrim with my new video card to see what would happen. Well, FPS shot up past 60 fps and into the hundreds, and I got to see what "screen tearing" looks like. However...

    i7 860 with a GTX 980 Ti, good enough for 1920x1200?

Hmm, I'm wondering if something else is wrong. I'm seeing videos on youtube showing smooth gameplay and Ultra settings, with a i7-860 at stock or 4.0 overclocks. It's weird. I've seen a game overpower a rig before, with framerates staying in the <20 range, but this is just weird, bouncing...

    i7 860 with a GTX 980 Ti, good enough for 1920x1200?

Occasional chug is one thing, but constant stuttering from the moment you click "play" (with all visual settings turned all the way down) is another. It seems like my i7-860 can't handle this game, either at stock or with a 43% overclock.

    i7 860 with a GTX 980 Ti, good enough for 1920x1200?

I didn't, but I just went back and tried: Disabled vsync in the Fallout ini files and enabled adaptive vsync in the NVidia control panel. Tried running in windowed mode, even in a tiny window. Same problems.

    i7 860 with a GTX 980 Ti, good enough for 1920x1200?

Ok, OC time. Got it up to 4.0 ghz. FO4 was noticeably "less" jittery, but not much. Still not playable. FPS still flew up and down like a yo yo. Upgrade time.
