If you've never touched linux before i'd probably say you should use ubuntu. It's reasonably popular and a lot of new linux users are going to it. Plus its based on debian so its a good way to get your feet wet.

I think two tests that werent mentioned and are important to me are start up time, and total memory usage. It takes a good minute to start KDE, while openbox is fired up and ready to roll in less than a second. The total mem usage isn't that big of a deal until you start getting into lower end...
Any modern distro with X should support this. It's especially easy if you have an nvidia card. Here is the applicable section from my config.
Section "Device"
Identifier "Geforce"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "NoLogo" "1"
#VideoRam 131072
# Insert Clocks lines...
How about the RF that gets thrown by your components. The metal cases shield it, but acrylic?
If you want to do a quick test try putting a simple radio alarm clock or something next to an acrylic case or next to a case that has its side off (on the same side as the missing panel...
Look its not like he's going to go buy a different laptop. He has the one he has. It has an ATI 9200. As does the mac mini i use at work that runs gentoo. So I know for a fact that the driver that ships with xorg for that chip works fine. It doesn't sound like its going to be a gaming...
The bible might be the best selling book in existance, but how many people have opened it and read it. Apply the same reasoning to the video game.
As for devil worship, There is no god, so it carries through that there is no devil. Therefore i cannot be a devil worshiper.
I don't know anyone that actually went to go see jesus chainsaw massacre. All these companies are doing is making a product for a niche market. The rest of us will stick with what we usually do, the standard issue blood, guts, and prostitutes.
Just like how jesus chainsaw massacre played...
Had 3 gentoo machines at ~1 year each and then we had a huge storm that knocked out power for 12 hours. Our UPS's couldnt handle that kind of loss and so we lost our uptimes.
XOR is a bitwise operator. It is an exclusive or. so the bits can be 1 and 0, 0 and 1, but not 1 and 1, or 0 and 0.
example
XOR on these two bytes
11001010
00101001

11100011 <--- after XOR
Most of the 'dot-files' as they are called in my neck of the woods contain config settings and temp data for various apps. They are pretty much set it and forget it type things. So usually there is no point in ever looking at them.
As far as hiding files in your home directory from other...
Check your grub.conf and see if you are using initrd to boot your kernel. I seem to remember initrd causing a double mounted / here at work. But I can't find anything on it. I'll keep digging.
PS: It never caused any problems btw.
You need to specify your question some more. What type of compatibility are you looking for? What exactly do you want the machine to do? If its just going to be a file backup machine, install samba and you're golden. Distro doesn't really matter as far as samba goes in my experience.
So...
IMO no other case manufacturer can hold a candle to Lian-Li.
They are the ONLY case manufacturer that hasn't totally turned their cases into big heaping piles of rice.
I second vsftpd for the daemon. It's worlds easier to set up imo. Otherwise you could use sftp that comes with the ssh suite.
I also second Gftp for the client.
As for the web server. If it's not apache, its not a webserver. :D :D
Most of those programming books have poor amazon ratings, and are overpriced vs. the used books on amazon. Call me frugal, but i calls em like a sees em.
The server(s) functionalities will be somewhat as follows
media backup/distributer:
Well lets see, do regular backups for the backups. I'm not sure what you mean by "distributer".
game server
Game servers are easy to set up with the dedicated installers provided by the vender...
If you aren't opposed to buying a book or two.
Some of the books I have seen that I wished I had when i started out are these. Linux in a Nutshell. The main thing that attracts me to this book is the list of linux commands that it contains. That would have helped me out a ton when I...
IIRC Fedora still comes with bash. He can do everything from the command line he wants to (i'd recommend it in fact).
Baby steps though. He'll progress to a [H]arder OS soon enough.
Plus, its pretty likely that they run one of those dirty RPM based distros (most businesses are retarded...
The most important thing i can offer you is this. When you finish the install, don't ask yourself "What do I do with now?". The answer is so painfully obvious most new linux users miss it. Do what you usually do with the computer! Code, surf, listen to music. You may need to ask in order to...
