Yes, there are multiple boards based on the nForce 4 chipset that have PCIe x16 slots. Some have 2 slots, some have 1. There is also at least one VIA k8t890 chipset-based mobo out that I know of, and it also has a PCIe x16 slot.

VIA is coming out with a chipset very soon, the K8T890, which will offer PCIe for socket 939. There's probably going to be alot of news about this soon, as VIA is holding a big press conference right now.

I'm pretty sure that the only reason valve even ported this was so that people who bought hl2 but hadn't played hl could follow the story. I also seem to remember reading that it was an initial attempt to see how simple it was to port things to the Source engine.
