    Dell Alienware AW3423DW 34″ QD-OLED 175Hz (3440 x 1440)

Same problem here ... I'm not sure what it is but the AW3423DW makes me feel ever-so-slightly dizzy or out-of-focus. It's a difficult feeling to explain but I never had this problem with my other monitors. I feel like I'm also in the minority though. The HDR experience is truly next-level but...

Steam Deck officially announced by Valve

That is also interesting... m.2 is a slot and not a socket. I suppose it could mean it's a proprietary socket they are using or they just made a typo on the website.

Steam Deck officially announced by Valve

That's a good question. I'm assuming there will be a recovery mode if the device becomes corrupt but it's most definitely on a different partition of the SSD.

Steam Deck officially announced by Valve

It looks like the Steam Deck website has been updated to include M.2 information but it's listed as "not intended for end-user replacement" https://www.steamdeck.com/en/tech

Creating a dedicated PC gaming console/machine? (re: Windows, etc)

Has anybody created a dedicated Windows-based gaming console/machine? I'm aware of SteamOS which runs Linux (Debian) but it's limited in the number of games you can play so I'd like to focus on Windows (10). Does anybody have any tips for doing this? It looks like Windows 10 Enterprise has...

FS: Ubiquity networking gear! EdgeRouter Pro and EdgeSwitches

I'm selling excellent condition EdgeSwitch 48-port and 24-port POE switches and an EdgeRouter Pro. They have been used in a home environment (no smoking, no pets) in a server rack and have been working flawlessly. Instead of having two switches, I've upgraded to a single 48-port POE switch so...

Motherboard with best fan controls? (re: Z270 motherboards?)

I've heard of that but doesn't that just involve installing another piece of software? It seems like BIOS control would be the most accurate/stable? (ie. the external controller needs to poll the motherboard for CPU temperature, etc, instead of the BIOS directly reading the CPU and then...

Motherboard with best fan controls? (re: Z270 motherboards?)

I'm currently using an Intel 6700K with an ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming. It supports ASUS Fan Xpert3 which is OK but it doesn't support fan hysterisis or delayed fan spin-up/spin-down. The other Z170 motherboards support it but not this one. I know I can install ASUS AI Suite but I'd rather not...

Should I buy an M.2 or SATA SSD? (and recommendations for 250 GB SSD?)

I'm looking to upgrade my OS drive SSD from 120 GB to around 250 GB and I noticed that my motherboard supports M.2 cards. (The motherboard is an ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming) Is there a benefit to going with an M.2 drive versus SATA? Any recommendations for a 250 GB SSD drive? (only for OS; I have...

Acer X34 has too many problems... what's the best 27" g-sync monitor?

I've purchased an Acer X34 (ultrawide 21:9 monitor) and I absolutely love it except for the problems. (monitor keeps showing connected/disconnected even with different cables, large green line on the right hand of the screen but only sometimes, scanlines on the left of screen, etc) Anyways...

Should I enable iGPU or leave disabled? (re: GTX 980)

I have an Nvidia GTX 980 that I use 100% for video output. However, I might want to use Intel QuickSync in the future, so is it worth enabling the iGPU? Does it have any performance difference if I leave it enabled but don't connect any monitors to it? What is the recommended approach when...

UPS recommendation for server rack? (both 220v/110v; mostly needed for 1-2s outages)

Thanks for the reply! Pennsylvania (northeastern; USA) Both are fine ... Amazon is probably better since I have Prime though. Unfortunately I only have a Best Buy nearby. Rackmount would be preferred but depending on price I could also place it on the bottom floor of the rack. I'm running...

UPS recommendation for server rack? (both 220v/110v; mostly needed for 1-2s outages)

My home server rack has a built-in 220v power strip and most of the devices are running off of that. The main server also runs on 220v and has a 1000w PSU plus about 20 HDDs. I'm not sure on the power draw but it's probably significant. The other important hardware in my rack is my router...

Question about Linux containers (LXC) and best practices? (re: Plex, nzbget, sonarr,

I've been using ESXi for a long time but I'm looking to switch to ProxMox and use Linux Containers (LXC) for most of my applications. In my current system, I have a "Download VM" which runs Debian 8 and nzbget, sonarr, couchpotato, etc. I also have another VM running my media servers such as...

    Recommendation for 24+ port switch?

    Recommendation for 24+ port switch?

Thanks for the suggestions everybody. I've decided to not worry about PoE since I have no devices right now and PoE injectors seem to be cheap enough. What are you thoughts on the Ubiquity EdgeSwitch Lite? (ES-48-LITE-US)

    Recommendation for 24+ port switch?

Can anybody recommend a 24+ port switch? I've been using a Dell PowerConnect 2824 and I think it's finally given up. It's going to be used in my home network, but I want something managed that can be rackmounted. I've never needed power over ethernet, but it seems that could be interesting...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Hmmm, aclmode=discard still allows a chmod to modify permissions. Does ZFS On Linux have an equivilant to aclmode=restricted? It looks like ZFS On Linux uses "acltype" instead of "aclmode" and has the options of off, disabled, noacl, an posixacl.

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Is there an alternative aclmode for non-Illumos? I'm trying to understand the different modes and it sounds like aclmode=discard might work? EDIT: To make things even simpler, can I specify on ZFS, that any NFS requests from 192.168.0.20 should map to user 'jmk396' and group 'users' and then...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Gea, Thanks as always for the reply. I don't really concern about security at all. I was just thinking about Windows interoperability. For example, Windows doesn't have a "Primary Group" concept like Unix does. Therefore, if I have a Unix user with a username of "jmk396" and a group...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

I think I've asked this before but I don't remember seeing any answers... What's the best strategy for creating UIDs and GIDs for sharing between both NFS and SMB? For example, Solaris seems to use unique UIDs but then all users share the "users" group. Most Linux systems use the "User...

24" IPS (or similiar) with faster than 60 Hz refresh? Still doesn't exist?

I get motion sick playing games on a screen that large. I know I could try to push the monitor further back but that's not really an option for my setup.

24" IPS (or similiar) with faster than 60 Hz refresh? Still doesn't exist?

Are there any 24" IPS (or similar) monitors that support greater than 60 Hz refresh? My ideal monitor is 24" IPS, 120 Hz, G-Sync, and perhaps 4K but I know that's not going to happen for a very, very, long time :)

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Thanks Gea. I've tested OSX and SMB1 is definitely much slower (about 50% slower). However, on Debian-based systems SMB1 and SMB2 are very similar like you mention. Regarding NFS3, I understand about the authentication and authorization, but I'm wondering about "best practices" when I'm...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

I'm sorry but disregard. I've re-run some tests and it seems correct now. However, SMB 2.1 is not that much faster than 1.0. I'll post some screenshots/benchmarks later. I do have another question though... What's the best way to define UID and GIDs to be shared with other systems...

Recommendations for 24" IPS with 100 Hz or higher?

Are there any 24" screens with IPS and support a refresh rate of 100 Hz or higher? Right now I have the ASUS VG248QE with G-Sync but I don't really see the big benefit of G-Sync and the TN panel has been really bothering me. I do have a GTX 980 and since the monitor is "only" 1080p, I often...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

EDIT: Is anybody using Solaris 11.3 beta and SMB 2.1? After running many tests, when I enable SMB protocol v2.1 then my read speeds are incredibly slow on Unix client devices. However, if I switch to protocol v1.0 then it's much, much faster. Could this be a bug? I'd love to test Nexenta for...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Sorry to ask again about authentication/authorization, but I'm still a little confused. I've installed an Active Directory server (Windows 2012 R2) on my home network and have successfully bound napp-it (Oracle Solaris 11.2) to it. I've also connected my Windows 10 machine as a client and...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

I've used napp-it and joined my Active Directory (using the Services -> SMB -> Active Directory), but do I need to configure anything else so that Solaris itself is aware of the domain and so I can login (ssh, ftp, etc) using my AD accounts?

Did I setup Active Directory correctly? (re: OSX, Linux, Vmware can't join domain)

Yes, the DNS server is listed as 127.0.0.1 on the AD server. However, it looks like I might have been using the wrong UPN to login ([email protected] instead of [email protected]). When I use the later, it provides me a new error in the log: 20150811200146:VERBOSE:lwio: GSS-API error...

Did I setup Active Directory correctly? (re: OSX, Linux, Vmware can't join domain)

I've just installed Active Directory on my Windows 2012 R2 server and my Windows 8/10 machines connect perfectly, but Linux and OSX can't seem to connect. The AD server's computer name is "DC01" and I used the following commands to install AD: Install-WindowsFeature AD-Domain-Services...
