I used the patch process here: coreavc-for-linux. It is a lot better than before but it still can't play it back without a lot of stuttering. I'd guess it's about 20-40% underpowered. The patched mplayer can use dual CPUs with the coreavc codec so testing the e2180 is next. On that site there is...
I tried the Samsung file and the 420 overclocked to 2128 Mhz doesn't have enough oomph to do it. Have you played this back on anything? I tried using mplayer with "mplayer -vo null -ao null Samsung..." and it started complaining so it could be the file has errors (I've seen a lot of buggy H.264...
It could indeed use a few upgrades but I'm trying to keep this as inexpensive as possible. I'm also trying to keep it really low watts but that part isn't working that well -- I think the best route for that is to use onboard video and all of the newer Nvidia (and ATI) boards no longer seem to...
My HTPC also does BitTorrent duties. I wanted the lowest power system possible without spending a lot of money. Here is what I would recommend:
Celeron 420 = 8w at idle/HALT, like 1/2 of Core 2 Duo cpu
PCChips P53g = cheap, has everything including SPDIF/digital audio if you can find a bracket...
TV: Regular standard definition 27" CRT by Philips (using svideo input)
Software:
Gentoo Linux
MythTV (see www.mythtv.org) with Nvidia drivers
Driver setup:
- XvMC with 1024x768 virtual display resized by card to NTSC-M (SVideo output)
My original HTPC:
CPU: Celeron D 340 (2.93 Ghz of...
So do you want a handheld GPS unit? A GPS adapter for your PC/laptop? Or perhaps a GPS Navigation system for your car? There are GPS units in many things.
Can you get reception over the air? If so, grab an Air2PC board off of eBay for $30-$40 (see one seller selling them for $40 shipped -- that is the manufacturer). They are all selling the older model but it works. I've had a few glitches in the video but I think that is due to my tinkering with...
You need to be able to play MPEG2 video. 300 Mhz is not enough. I think the recommendation is 700+ Mhz but 600 Mhz may work with if using an Nvidia card with XvMC. Personally, unless I had a 700 Mhz system sitting around, I'd go for something a little more peppy (like 1 Ghz).
You likely can...
I'm ending up with basically the same system after a round about try of a bunch of different components. I just ordered the Jetway last night. My current HTPC is a Celeron D 340 with an Asrock P4Dual-915GL. This setup works great except the AGP card goes over the PCI bus which is also used by...
To followup, GopChop works okay but if you're using MythTV 0.19, use the internal system and lossless transcoding. It works better. Except when you flub it and get a chunk of commercial in the output :(. Time to try again!
Yes. But if you didn't know, Outpost/Frys puts Polk speakers on sale on a fairly regular basis. I picked up a pair of R15s a couple weeks ago and I've seen them go on sale ($40-$50/pair) every 2-3 months it seems like. Too bad this deal went so fast... I don't get it. But it should be back again!
I almost ordered but I've got a Celeron-D and it's for a PVR which needs to be quiet. For those that have the CD hanging over the CPU heatsink/fan -- some CD/DVD drives are shorter than normal by about 3/4 - 1 inch. I don't recall which in particular but some googling should get results.
I think the best deal at the moment is the ATI X800XL Pro refurb direct from ATI on shop.ati.com. It's $170 or so after "1010" coupon and then ~ $15 for shipping so under the $200 limit.
The Dell LCD deals typically come along at the end of their fiscal quarters. I don't recall how that all...
The X800 XT PE for $229 at ZipZoomFly is out of stock but they have a retail and non-retail X800 XT for $219. I'm cancelling my ATI order and waiting to until I get back from vacation. It looks like were in major Price Drop Country. Wahoo!
At this price who cares... If you're going to get a new video card and you are considering PCI-E and you already have a CPU for this or you want a cheap CPU... Makes sense to me.

Is that the motherboard you're talking about?
Also do all the socket 754 motherboards have the issue with 3 sticks of ram going down the next speed setting? I got in on the ancient AMD bundle deal with the A64 3200+ and the Asus K8V SE Deluxe...
Sound advice! Cancel now and buy a refurbed 6800. I got so excited about this I thought it had two DVI ports. Too bad about that but I'm staying in :).
This or the possiblity of a X800XT PE for about the same price (from ATI, refurbed). Hrm... I dunno. I'm going to wait on ATI a bit and see if it comes through.
$179 for Asus K8V SE and AMD 3200+ (definately agree with prior poster on the mobo sucking)
ValueAmerica - tons of stuff for 50% off of good prices just like the other posters mention... I picked up $50 DeWalt drills for $25. Playstations for ? It was crazy crazy crazy. Free money for all!
