Its not just about framerate, its about hi-res and higher levels of image quality. Have your friend pick up another half gig of ram, and a copy of FEAR, and then see how he likes only being able to play it at 1024x768 =]

I play WOW on my 1.6ghz PentiumM laptop with Intel Extremely Slow Graphics all the time. I can just get about 30 fps at low res with the detail on low.

Oh yes, good point. Can only get 7800 series in PCI-e. I would definitely recommend more ram, even to the point of 2 gigs. Ram isnt too expensive at the moment, and it certainly cant hurt to have more.

Ram would definitely help, and the processor is a bit weak also. However, the performance gains on a decent system from a 6800gt to a 7800GTX are NOT misicule, its the difference between running alot of games at 1280x960 4x/8x vs 1600x1200 4x/8x at about the same framerate.

Good point. Just read over the [H] review of the 512mb x800xl, and you are right about that. However, what I was trying to get across is that the 512 isnt any faster than the 256, just more expensive.

Dont even think about blowing your money on the x800xl 512mb. Its considerably slower than the 6800gt in every game, and quite a bit more expensive.

I should add that the game isnt perfectly playable at 16x12 with 8x MSAA. Its darn close though, seems to be about 25 FPS. Next generation I suppose....

Try BF2 with 8x MSAA and 16x AF with a 7800GTX, and tell me it still looks good on 6800U =]

Yeah man, the difference between the 4600 and the 6800 cant be overstated. It is pretty much like night and day, going from 800x600 to 1280x1024, with antialiasing and antistropic filtering. It will be the best $$$ you ever spent.

With a 6800, you will be able to play any game out now, at absolute top detail, 4x/8x, at at LEAST 1024x768 and get amazing frame rates. And the vast majority of games will be more than playable at those settings, up to 1280x960 or even 1600x1200. I hope, for your sake, that you dont just have a...
