So I just got this video card (ASUS GTX 970 Turbo), and it's emitting a sort of buzzing noise from the fan at any speed. If I put my hand on the plastic casing, the noise seems to be dampened, but not eliminated. The pitch of the buzz appears to be related to the fan speed.
Here's a video I...
I've talked with one guy who really loves Windows 8, and that basically summed up how he used his computer: because he launched apps purely by searching or favorites, he could use Windows 8 just as fast as Win7. That's the one hope I see for Windows 8 -- if people realize that keyboard...
This exactly. Windows 8 is all around improved, except for the usability nightmare that is the UI changes. I'm hoping that someone releases some software that restores the start button to normal functionality.
Thanks -- it sounds like the adapter is the way to go! I'm focusing on keeping the drives because this is an exercise in seeing how few components I could get away with upgrading (I was thinking only Mobo+CPU+RAM).
The Newegg reviews seem do seem pretty questionable -- are you familiar with...
I was looking into upgrading my older micro-atx desktop on the cheap, and it looks like the AMD Fusion A8 processor would give me a nice dollars to performance ratio.
Every socket FM1 motherboard I can find, though, only provides SATA connections, and I don't want to just get rid of my old...
I tried one once -- at B&H Photo in NYC, they had Envy laptops you could try. I remember it being made of metal, though it didn't have that weird/cool solid feel of the MBP.
It's mostly non-performance related stuff, so if you're just planning on booting into Windows to play a quick game you'll be fine. However, for normal use, there's a bunch of things that don't work *quite* right. Let's see...
* Windows can't adjust the brightness of the backlight, so there's...
I have a Macbook Pro 13. The battery life is pretty good -- I get about 4-ish hours out of it with normal use. But DEFINITELY not the 10 they advertise. You'll be able to stretch it to 6 if you really try.
One thing to remember is that the MBP is no good for running Windows -- the computer...
Hey all,
I'm trying to find a netbook. I'm mainly interested in it as a secondary computer, so computing power isn't a huge issue.
Since the main things that I want are battery life and durability, I'm looking for something with around 8-10 hours of battery life, and a solid state drive...
I've found a bunch of "multitouch" laptops online, but most of them seem to have only 2 touch points (though a couple had 4). Does anyone know of one that supports more?
Thanks!
Hey all,
In the exciting continuation of my quest to install windows on an old tablet pc (Fujitsu Stylistic LT C-500), I now can't get Windows to install.
I successfully booted the computer's internal drive into DOS (the Windows 98 version), and copied the i386 directory from a Windows...
Well, this doesn't quite answer your question, but you could just restrict all internet access from anywhere by editing your Hosts file.
Alternatively, I suppose you could delete hh.exe in the Windows directory, and just eliminate access to the HTML help viewer altogether.
Ah, no, the tablet is still booting off its internal HD...I just used a "Make your USB stick bootable" tutorial (specifically, this one: http://www.thepcspy.com/read/bootable_usb_flash_drive) to make the tablet's HD bootable. (The drive was in a USB enclosure, connected to my laptop.) Once I...
That's what I figured -- right now, I'm trying using a utility for making USB drives bootable, to see if that works.
If that doesn't, though, it's a Fujitsu Stylistic LT C-500.
By the way, thanks for all the quick replies!
EDIT: Ah ha! It worked -- now I can boot a Windows 98 DOS prompt. In...
Most simplistic way of all? Sounds good to me :-)
And nope, there's no OS of any kind on the drive, it's completely blank except for the stuff I just put on it, which I can easily remove.
Okay....you've completely lost me...:(
I'm pretty sure the /s option hasn't been around since Windows ME; it's definitly not in 7, Vista, or XP, since I just tried them all. Unless you're referring to a 98/ME startup disk, which isn't really an option either since I don't know where I would...
It's worse than that, you can't even change your wallpaper:
http://www.withinwindows.com/2009/03/28/surprise-you-cant-change-your-wallpaper-in-windows-7-starter-edition/
OK, so I transferred the system files to the drive, but it still won't boot...I consistently get the message "Remove disks or other media and press any key to restart". Searching for that yields things saying I'm missing boot files...but I copied every file (from this website...
Wouldn't that mean that I'd be stuck with a FAT32 formatted Windows 2000 installation, though?
EDIT: Wait, nevermind, these Microsoft KB articles http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307848/ and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307881 say that you can convert to NTFS later.
I'll have to try that...
Hey all,
I just bought a weird old tablet pc without an OS. It also has no removable storage, and predates USB booting.
I've heard that the problem can be solved by installing the OS over a network, but I'm still not quite sure how to do that (most of the directions I found on the...
Right now, my computer (Sempron 2800+, 1256MB RAM) has a GeForce 6100, which gives me pretty bad framerates on Portal at 640x480, and slightly better ones on HL2.
I'm looking to buy a new video card in hopes that I can run all the games in the Orange Box at 1280x1024 with decent framerates...
My current motherboard (came in a VINTAGE AE-1 barebone system) has been acting strangely, and also seems to have compatibility problems with most operating systems, including, to a degree, Windows, so I've decided to buy a new one. I'm not planning on spending on any more than $70, I already...
Star Wars: Episode 1 RACER...Remember that game?
I got a Voodoo3 2000 PCI...that was right when PCI cards were on their way out...
I was amazed when it wasn't skippy on my 166mhz AMD K6!
Does anyone know where I can download the OSX version of iTunes 4.7?
Also, if anyone thinks posting that would be illicit (like they did on AppleNova), does anyone know of an alternative program that can serve my music over the local network using DAAP?
Thanks!
I already own a 2.1 speaker set on my computer, and I'm soon going to buy a new monitor, which may or may not (depending on which one I buy) come with built-in stereo speakers. If I did buy the model with speakers, is there any way to connect the monitor's speakers with my existing two to...
I'm trying to download a 4,280MB file (SuSE DVD ISO), but most download programs (I've tried wget and Firefox's built in one) seem to get confused about half way through the download, and begin counting into negative percentages (and file sizes). Does anyone know of a program that is capable...
I have about 1,300 bmp files generated by a terragen script that make up a video. Does anyone know of a program that can convert the still frames into a single video file?
Thanks!
When I said I wanted to try repair installing XP Home over Pro, Phoenix86 told me to post the result, so here it is.
XP Home identifies XP Pro it as a completely different operating system, and thus refuses to do a repair install over Pro.
Try starting in safe mode by pressing F8 (I think) just before the XP logo appears, and selecting "Safe Mode" from the menu. Assuming the computer boots into safe mode, start system restore from Start>Accessories>System Tools, and restore it to the point with a name referring to the...
