Nah, can't really return it. It was ebay, and it was stated that the plug was missing. Anyway, I did get it for about the lowest price I've seen a 280x go for, and I've been hunting it for a while. I just didn't expect the connector to be such a hassle.
Cable didn't work, apparently these are...
Definitely not hardwired:

Found this, might have to trim away some of the plastic around the plugs, but hoping it will work

I just picked up a good deal on a used Gigabyte 280x to to pair with my current one. Just one small problem. The 1 to 3 fan cable is missing. This card apparently has a 3-pin header and 1x 3-pin and 2x 2-pin fans. Maybe my google-fu is weak today, but I can't seem to find this cable anywhere. I...
Are there any good ebook metadata editors out there? I've got a metric assload of ebooks, and the metadata is mostly crap, and the filename formatting is all over the place. I'm looking for something that can do for my ebooks what mp3/Tag Studio did for my music, and that can handle multiple...
Does anyone make a low-end IPSEC VPN client device?
All I want to do is to connect a single VOIP phone to our office network, so all I really need is something with 2 ports that can be an endpoint for one IPSEC tunnel and shove any traffic that comes in the LAN side into the VPN. No fancy...
They do seem to support openCL.
*sigh* So the only thing that expensive little chunk of silicon is really good for is video transcoding, which I have zero use for? Seems like such a waste. I mean, I know anything integrated is crap, but you'd think it'd at least be better than a CPU for this...
Whenever Ivy Bridge finally hits retail, I'll finally be replacing my trusty but ancient Athlon64-X2. Since I have a real graphics card, I thought I'd use the integrated GPU for folding. Apparently that's not yet possible. Well, what about SETI@Home I thought? Nope, the BOINC client doesn't look...
Be aware though, that non-volume licensing versions of 2010 may flat out refuse to install on a TS machine. Just ran into this when I tried to install it on XA6 with the Action Pack disc instead of the licensing kit one. (I just love MS's media vs license games)
Thanks guys, this gives me some good info.
I had assumed that with the modulars I'd just be able to buy a new cable when a new connector comes out (say if the PCIE connector grows to 10 pins with the next generation). If that's not the case I may as well just keep buying molex-to-whatever...
I'm woefully out of touch on the state of PSUs. Both my boxes are running on ~4 year old Antecs, which are still doing fine, but I'm getting tired of having this rat's nest of power adapters that grows every time I change out a piece of gear. Thinking of upgrading at least to something with all...
I'd love to see the benchmarks re-run using the SSD as a ReadyBoost drive and compared to SRT to see what kind of performance difference this really offers.
Does anyone even still make wireless mice that aren't optical? I'm looking to buy a set for my HTPC. I'll be using the mouse on a glass coffee table and don't want to have to keep a mousing surface handy. I found one cheap-ass set with a ball mouse, but found out that you get what you pay for...
Normal behavior in Win2K when a problem is encountered printing a job is to throw up the standard 'retry, cancel?' dialog box, and if no there is no response after a certain amount of time, to automatically try to restart the job. Is there a way to change this behavior, or at least the length of...
Thanks guys, good call on the memory. Pulled one stick, and it ran right through like a champ. Now I just need to explain to my friend that he's the proud owner of a $150 piece of RAM that he can't use. I suppose I could offer to take it off his hands, at a steep discount of course :D
Well, doesn't seem to be the HS. I cleaned them both, and reapplied a much thinner layer of paste, and still no change. Unfortunately the Albatron isn't in Tom's comparison, but I'll try running it with just one DIMM and see what happens. I can try pulling the DDR from my rig and using it there...
:) yes the fan is on, and the HS is in the right direction. Will only go on one way with the retail mounting setup. Thermal paste is a little heavier than usual, but should still be better than tha t damn thermal pad that came on it. Maybe I didn't get all the residue off? I'll reclean it and go...
Well, it's definitely getting hotter than that. I tried setting the overheat alarm in BIOS at 53C, and it tripped maybe halfway through the install. I've reseated the HS several times, to little effect. I'm not sure what to do short of buying a massive HS, but damnit, the retail should be enough...
My buddy just got the parts for a nice new A64 system that I was going to assemble for him. Should have been simple, but I can't even get it through a windows install (2K or XP). Once I got it thought the initial setup, but it couldn't make it though the configuration phase after the first...
