Well, it was an idea. I'm sure it would violate my TOS (didn't know there were provisions in it for that, but it makes sense.)
Question answered, thank you:)
Not planning on installing anything beyond simply the router software. I know that many of the local schools subsidize laptops for the kids (insane, I know) plus we do have a few college students and such. I'm going to throttle the bandwidth for sure, but I'm not sure what the major risks are...
Greetings peoples:)
It has been quite a long time since I came here, but I thought that this place would be the ideal place to ask this question.
Recently, I came back from living in South Africa and I realized that internet is a commodity that Americans such as myself are blessed with...
We recently put together an intranet site for the company I work for, and all seems great except for users who are using Internet Explorer 6. The problem is that the <base> command doesn't work, all links die, and make the site virtually worthless to anyone not using Firefox/IE7. Is there some...
Not completely sure that this is in the right place but I'll throw it up here anyway.
We have a very...... eccentric employee who has had a laptop assigned to him years before I even came on-board and started cracking down on security and inventory. As politics go in the workplace, I've never...
there is a cluster of about 100 in this particular area that I would want to force reboot.
From inquiring further, it seems that SP2 machines don't deal with net send whatsoever unless I specifically turn it on and allow it firewall access.
I'm a little wary of using 'free' programs for...
Is there an easy way to force a reboot on all computers connected to a domain?
We have some 'higher ups' who don't allow us direct access to their machines and yet a lot of the start-up scripts don't fire off because, even after repeated requests, they fail to turn off or reboot their PCs...
We have a LOT of 'homebrew' programming going on, and unfortunately, we've found that most of our programs are not compatible.
So we're trying hard to not go to it. It offers nothing good to us. The only worry is Microsoft forcing it.
Greetings:)
I'm a system admin for a university, and over the weekend, I had a user try to install Windows Media Player 11. After doing so, his system no longer plays any media file that was ripped from previous versions of media player. Specifically, an error of 0x450d6d2c of 0x000000004...
I come from old school style so I've always enjoyed batch files.... but I think it's the only way to go... I'll throw one up and see what happens
thanks all
Ah, thanks:)
Unfortunately, I'm still plagued with the issue dealing with the NET error, it's apparent even within the login, it gives me the error that NET cannot be found, yet it's sitting in it's place in the Windows folder
Okay, here is the deal...
I have a cluster of about 50 computers on a domain. I wrote a batch script that has the following:
NET USE Z: \\server\share
The script runs on the start-up of all PCs, as well as a firefox installer script that checks whether the latest version is installed...
let me make it clear that I am not out to screw anyone over, if I was, I would have RMA'd it already, without taking into consideration all the stuff I've done
I've gotten many different reports from people, everything from bad drivers, to bad HSF connection, to bad PSU...
It was tested with the stock fan on it, and it indeed had them still, so thats why I splurged on the cooler because many people said that the stock cooling isn't good enough for this particular card
and Terra, you can take your piece of trash attitude elsewhere, I didn't pay in euros so...
Okay, I recently ordered a new card from New Egg, it's the Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 256 meg, and I also got the Arctic Cooling HSF unit for it. I plugged it in last night and noticed that I had issues with drivers immediately. I uninstalled and reinstalled them multiple times, up to this point...
I've been put in-charge of the task of backing up a select set of files on a few computers at my office. I'm having major issues though, and I'm lost on which steps I should take.
The main problem is that I have a file called X that needs to be compressed, and sent to a network drive nightly...
Hello, I'm going to finally be in-charge of a win 2k3 server that was recently absolutely destroyed by a hacking attempt and trojan download. I'm getting a fresh install and I'm curious on recommendations on basic security I should impliment.
I'm looking at a good software firewall, a good...
I was put in-charge of a task that I'm having issues with.
I am supposed to get all the computers within the local network here at my job to defrag, backup certain files, and chkdsk every weekend. Unfortunately, the higher ups haven't splurged for a real tech overhaul, so I'm stuck trying to...
Thanks for the response:)
1: Yes, everyone has their own mapped drives. I was thinking of doing that, but above Eudora, I would also like to backup their 'My Documents' just so some genius doesn't come along and happen to delete their own My Documents folder (which has happened, saddly...
I was recently hired for a job as an IT tech, and a few issues have been put in-front of me, and I'm wondering what the best was to go about dealing with them is. Any help would be appreciated dearly. This is at a University and I am still a student, so I'm really looking towards those who have...
d'oh... didn't finish thought
basically, 'secure' meaning that some dude who has win XP can just load up drivers for my printer (which XP does automatically when prompted) and use it, I'm wanting a network that will not allow this....
basically, 'secure' meaning that some dude who has win XP can just load up drivers for my printer (which XP does automatically when prompted) and whatnot.
I don't need any sort of true encryption, just something to keep the average person out
Unfortunately the dorms I live in suck. Not in the manner most complain about, but in the fact that the outside connection is absolutely horrid. For instance, first day I was here, I thought it'd be nifty to run a speed test to see what kinda bandwidth I was going to be able to play with...
that's very unfortunate, I'm a fan of my Golden Sample Ti4200..... but if I have the risk of getting a POS reference card instead of what I truly want, I'm not a happy camper
+1 for Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative
they're brilliant programs and lose the need for the bloatware they call "Real Player" and "Quicktime Player"...
plus they're spyware free....
as it goes.... this is what I always have....

hahahha CD Burner, on a 120 mhz Cyrix chip....
This damn thing can't run tax programs for God's sake.....
I guess I'll do the whole drive swap thingy thing....
Okay, my parents have a computer.... it's a cyrix 200 120 mhz POS... so being the nice son I am, I decided to go ahead and build them a new one. Now pending a few parts, it's basically complete. But now I need some advice on something dealing with Win XP, Win 98 interactions...
So they have a...
that's what I'm doing right now, but I dunno, being a perfectionist, I suppose that I just want to get that damn boot record off the second...
ah well, fuck it for now, I'm starting to not care:)
well this is how I used to boot it
since I didn't want the Win XP boot record fucked with, I put the MBR on the secondary drive with the Mandrake installation... then in Bios, I'd simply just boot from the secondary drive...
basically.... how in the heck do I kill the MBR on the second...
indeed I did...
It would fix the MBR of my primary drive with Windows XP on it (/dev/hda)...
BUUUUTTTT.... I suppose I have a MBR written to my secondary drive (/dev/hdb1)... which is pure linux...
how could I kill it on the secondary drive?
I have my main harddrive (/dev/hda) as my Win XP partition, and a second harddrive (/dev/hdb) as a Slackware drive. Well I was having issues with the Kernel in Slackware, so I decided to jump down to a lower version of Mandrake to see if my hardware was the issue, or if it was the Slackware...
yeah that reformat question was suspicious of a noob, but never fear, you seemed to do alright...
Anyway, what kind of service do you have? Comcast? DSL?
Hey guys:) I love the new forums bigtime:)
Anyway, I've been having an issue with a CD rom drive that I bought recently.
It's a Pioneer DVD/CD Writer model A06U. The issue I'm having is that it turns off and on during various times.
Example. Right now, it has no power going to it, then...
