Thx for the great advice guys. A few comments:
1) Yeah, I use a 24" LCD at 1920x1200, thus the desire for SLI. Wanna' keep that option open.
2) What's the 780 do that the 750 doesn't? I didn't see much in the way of features.
3) 8gb is just a fantasy. Can prolly skip it easy.
4) I know...
Final thoughts -- thanks to all who have contributed help to my quest for a new PC!
1) I know everyone is directing me to the Corsair PSU. I want the extra 100w though. Is Zalman a good name? Where else can I turn for a good PSU that's in the 800w-1000w range?
2) Mobo. I want to stick...
Sorry -- just 2GB RAM in my current rig, plain old ddr1.
So it sounds like the consensus is...
1) Get the e8400 chip and worry about Nehalem next year
2) Get an 8800GT now to minimize my risks this summer, as I *DO* want the top-end vid. card available. I can either sell the 8800GT if...
So, I'm trying to decide if I should upgrade now. Been playing Age of Conan and my PC just isn't cutting it. I use my PC for 90% gaming, at 1920x1200.
This is what I have now, running XP:
CPU AMD x2 4400+
Mobo Abit a8n SLI
RAM DDR2 800 chips
PSU OCZ 600W Gamestream
GPU eVGA 7800GT...
Okay...
So, I just built my first comp. Athlon 64 3200, Lian Li PC-65, Corsair XMS 1GB PC-3200 RAM, Antec TruePower 480, 70GB Raptor, Asus K8V Deluxe.
I'm not oc'ing anything. Everything is at stock speeds. The fans in the case are the stock fans that came with it.
Idle, it's about...
Well, have my zalman installed after a lot of headacher. I'm still at like 38 idle / 46-48 load. not sure why it's so hot??? My wired are EVERYWHERE (it looks like spaghetti in my case), but would that make so much of a diff.? I have a Lian Li pc-65 case.
However, it's a LOT less noisy :p
So you're suggesting that I don't put any grease on the HSF itself, not even putting some on and then wiping it off to get it into the invisible grooves of the surface?
That would make life much easier ;p
"After THOROUGHLY cleaning up with the isopryl."
Do you mean clean up the edges? If not, what should I be througly clearning?
Also, my big thing on the zalman is the noise reduction :0
Okay, a few questions off of that page.
1.) As this is an Athlon 64 chip, that presumably has a heat spreader, I should just have to drop a bb sized pellet of the grease on the CPU and then "wiggle back and forth" the hsf plate on top of it.
NOT spread the compound?
2.) Since this is an...
Hi all,
Screwed up the first time I applied thermal grease (the good Silver brand) on my stock HSF / A64 3200+. WAY TOO MUCH APPLIED! :P My cooling sucks - my comp. idles at like 39C.
Anyway, please help me make sure I do it right this time. If anything looks wrong below, I can really...
So a dot on the cpu, and you don't spread it around -- y ou just place the HSF on the dot and let it squish?...
For the HSF, please tell me if this is right (Thanks!)
Apply to only the area the CPU will touch (which is damend hard to figure out). Spread around with plastic bag.
Then...
Well, from everything I've read, the AGP Aperture size in the BIOS should never be set above 128, even if the vid. card has 256MB of ram (as mine does)... ???
Interesting!!!
"On an Intel P4 type CPU with a large metal heat spreader, put a small amount of Arctic Silver onto the center of the heat spreader as shown in the photo.
Only a small amount of Arctic Silver is needed, about the size of an uncooked grain of short-grain white rice or 1/2 of a...
I gummed a lot of the antec silver thermal paste on the cpu and heatsink before attaching the hsf. not too much, but everything was covered. if i install a new hsf, how do i get the old paste off the cpu?
Okay, an hour of Neverwinter Nights, and I'm at 53c... this seems high! If anyone could help offer advice on why this might be the case, and what I could do to bring it down, that would be great.
It doesn't bother me; it bothers the missus :(
She was pissed enough at my 7.1 speaker setup, with the noise whlie she studies in the office (we share an 'office' - my games, her laptop station), I can't leave my comp. on without bugging her silly.
Anyway, yah, I may get a diff. PSU...
My system with all of the above is loud!!! I'm using the stock HSF which, according to AsusProbe, is generall about 4000 RPMs. The monitor on the AsusProbe is showing the Chassis fans operating at about 2000 RPM. The 9800XT fans are going at about 4-5000 RPMs too (and the facking chip is at...
Idle, I'm generally at:
44C CPU / 38C MOBO
CPU has gone as high as 52-53 when playing games / reiterating 3dMark2001 over and over. Is that safe?
I have a Lian Li PC=65B case -- 2 front fans, fan on top, rear chasis fan. TruePower 480 with rear/bottom fan. 9800XT w/ 2 fans.
It's...
No sh*t. I didn't realize that oc'ing the VC wouldn't do anything for system performance. Anyway, ya' that's where mine topped out. I'm using the Asus SmartDoctor utility to boost up those settings.
Also - If I'm not mistaken, the 64/3200+ doesn't OC well. Hell... I tried just turning on...
Hi All,
I can't top 21000 in 3dmark2001. I've boosted my 9800xt to 432/756, but my CPU is running at stock. Memory timings are set std for my memory (Corsair PC-3200 Low Latency - 2-3-2-6). Bios settings are pretty standard (128mb AGP Ap, Memlocked for DDR400). I haven't really tweaked...
Well, I managed to get it out. I literally had to PRY it out with a flat bladed screwdriver. Funny thing is, when installed the right way, it just slid in...
Pretty supid of me. Anyway, when I power up (I'm on laptop now), I'll let everyone know how the sound works.
I really don't think it's my HD -- I have a Raptor 70GB, which is loud as heck, but the loudness isn't a HD purring noise. It's a whirring fan sound, so, it had to be a fan. I'm pretty sure from this thread that it's the HSF.
Just need to figure out how to replace the sucker, and what would...
what's a good socket 754 heatsink fan?
and, is uninstalling a hsf as simple as taking the old one out, wiping off the thermal grease, and putting the new one on?
CPU out that way... ! :P Seriously tho', I think I can probably take the top chassis fan out and fix my PSU problem.
I do notice that initially, right after booting up for the first few minutes, it's pretty quiet. Then after awhile, it turns into the beast it is. I'll try the PSU first...
Well, I realized after I got it in that I had put it in with the fan pointed up on the top of the PSU. Only problem is, because of the fan grill on top of the PSU, I can't get it back out through the back of the PC (the fan grill gets stuck on the PSU cage). And, I can't push it through the...
So, I put my comp. together last night:
Lian Li PC-65B (4 stock case fans)
Antec TruePower 480 (2 fans)
Asus 9800xt (2 stock fans)
A64/3200+ (stock HSF)
This things sounds like an angry vaccuum cleaner. I did install my PSU upside down (I'm not joking... the internal fan - ie., not the...
Thanks! This helps a lot. With my system up and running, I think I'm good without a RAID setup anyway... this HD is FAST! I may just get a big fat IDE drive to dump stuff on at some point in the future.
No, didn't do the cool n quiet... figured it's unnecessary? Also, my temp isn't going above 54C - even with repeated iterations of 3dmark - so I'm hoping it'll be kosher?
Hi all,
My 3200+ A64 is running at 50-52 Celsius when idle (in BIOS monitor). Is this too hot? Everything's at stock (settings, using stock HSF, etc.). Only thing I did was put on Arctic thermal paste instead of the default stuff.
This is my first comp. build, so sorry if this is a...
Is there any point then in having only one SATA drive?
Ie., I have just a single 70 GB Raptor. Do I get any performance improvement from that over just a normal IDE drive (have the Asus k8v mobo w/ sata support)?
Or do you really need to have dual SATA drives in a RAID array to milk...
For gaming now, will 512MB will present that much of a difference in performance as opposed to a full GB? I was kind of torn on that issue, and decided to cut a small corner with only the one stick of RAM. I figured that down the road in a few months, when more games will take advantage of...
Yeah, I was going to go wiht 1 GB of RAM, but I was getting really guilty about the price at the end. I do almost exlucisively computer gaming, so for now 512 MB will probably hold me up until I can throw in another stick.
And yeah, I'm a newb. I haven't had a great gaming system in years...
Well, my 2003 bonus finally hit my checking account, so today was my big day. My a** still hurts from the cost for all of this, but I'll be a happy boy through this next year!
PROCESSOR:

Okay... so, I'm typing this on my girlfriend's powerbook!!! Needless to say, the sooner I can get my comp. going the better. I'm definitely going AMD (thus, the post in this forum), and my question is: do I go with an A64 3000+ or 3200+ NOW, or, bite the bullet and hold off 2 months for a 939...
