The 3090 pricing ain't cheating. This place is awesome. I just saw a 3080 TI go for $500.
But yup, totally cheating having the PSU already! This actually had a big influence on my build approach. If I was starting from scratch, I probably would have ended up with a smaller case and something...
Finished this last week. Goal is 4k gaming and fast load times. How did I do?

I have a 4590 with 8 gigs of ram, and I saw a big jump going from gtx 750 -> 960 -> 1070 each time. Currently very happy running 1080p games. I'm about to upgrade too, but mostly for load times and 4k. AM4 and 12400 systems are great values right now.
Incidentally, I just bought a Gigabyte...
I've never tried water cooling before. Looks like AIO options make it relatively straightforward these days.
I'm researching a midrange upgrade. Not sure if Intel or AMD, but almost certainly not the latest gen. Looks like some recent stuff can run pretty hot. I've long been a fan of Noctua...
That is beautiful, nice work! I've never gone with a white case before, but that is really striking, it's pretty tempting.
I'm considering a Torrent compact, but I read that the cable management is significantly more annoying than the full size. If it was already a pain at full size, I'm not...
Yup, 💯 on Verizon screwing 'em. And HP. I was happy to see a lot of the great ideas from webOS make their way into iOS and Android eventually, at least.
Yeah, you're right Aurelius. Google's way of doing things is better when there's competition. I've been living in the Nexus/Pixel semi-walled garden since the start. Honestly I've been pretty happy with them, but improved competition would make them even better.
If I'm honest, I still miss my...
Very interesting, thanks for sharing your insight, particularly since you have much more data. It really does feel like as a consumer, pretty much everything is luck of the draw. This is why I like buying used / refurb and lower- to mid-end stuff, so at least it doesn't suck as bad when I hit...
I spent so many years buying midrange laptops from various brands, and they all fell apart on me within 3 years. Then I spent $700 on a used macbook, and many years later it's pretty much in the same condition I got it. New prices are nuts, though.
I'm a big fan of HDFury. Using a Vertex 2 to handle 4k/HDR switching with an LG OLED65C9, and pass audio off to a 10-year-old Onkyo TX-NR818.
I love doing this because it gives me cheap Audyssey XT32 and generally great audio quality without compromising on video quality.
Does no one do OnePlus any more?
In any case, I'm yet another Pixel guy, and I like my P6Pro. Also note, Pixel 7 is just about to announce, likely worth a look.
I'm using an 11 year old Razer Orochi, and honestly I love it and have no urge to upgrade (for FPS use). So I thought I'd post here and ruin that by asking, should I have an urge to upgrade it? :)
I think it's pretty awesome that a thread about 5.25" drive bays is this long in 2022. I mean, what am I supposed to do, put my Midiland S2/4100 control module on my desk like some sort of savage?
Definitely had something like this happen to me with Amazon orders. I think in my case I guessed that it was a burst pack of powdered detergent that must have been adjacent to my product before it was packed. And I guess the pickers gave no effs? Can't say I blame them with the working...
Apple certainly has always attempted to exert control over every aspect of their products, it's kinda their thing. Gotta say, I found the giant repair kit to be fascinating (e.g. https://www.theverge.com/2022/5/21/23079058/apple-self-service-iphone-repair-kit-hands-on). Even when they let you...
Is there any major difference between all of the different GPU ODMs? I haven't paid much attention, beyond getting the impression that EVGA was one of the favorites.
I've only just learned about this concept, reading about the 5800X3D. Seems like this makes a lot of sense at the midrange, at least for some gaming workloads. But for high end stuff, I'd think it doesn't matter as much.
Just popped in to say I'm still using my S2/4100 set that I bought in 1999. Well...it might be a different control module, since a bunch failed on me, but still. 😁
Wow, I'd have thought this was well worked-out by now, thanks for the heads-up. Certainly makes sense why it would require uEFI-specific support, since there is no disk controller intermediary, in lieu of direct PCI access.
It's actually the opposite of what it appears. I already own it (from a long-ago torn down mining rig)! My current gaming PC has a 450w, which limits my options more than I'd like.
So either I upgrade my tiny PSU, or upgrade the case. Incidentally, the Cougar can't fit a lot of the modern GPU...
After some reflection, I'm probably going to see if I can hold out to black friday, so I have a little time to mull this over.
I remain tempted to keep my current SATA SSD... But there is also a part of me that likes the idea of a clean install from scratch, and I rather get the NVMe up-front...
