I wouldn't count on RAID as a backup solution for precious photos. Pay of an offsite backup ASAP. I use carbonite and backblaze and am happy with both of them. Last thing you need is 2 drives dying in a RAID 5 an you lose everything you really want.

I'm using an Acer 1410 right now CULV, comes with 2GB of ram and has a free slot Good resolution @ 1366x768 Win 7 home premium 64 bit 250GB drive Runs surprisingly quick. Can't handle a lot of games but I can play Civ 4 on it with no issues.

I'm pretty happy with my Acer 1410. CULV 2300, 2GB of ram (can add more into the empty slot), plays back HD video fine and I get about 5-6 hours use out of it. I can even run Civ4 on it at decent settings (though gaming does lower the battery life a decent amount).

I downloaded one of the 1080p wmv demos from microsoft today. It played smoothly at like 50% cpu pleased++

Check out ogio backpacks.. they're very well made (been using one with my laptop for about 3 years now and it looks brand new still) I stayed away from messenger bags because even with my 14.1" laptop, I started to feel shoulder pain on long transit journeys to work and back.

For that price range I'd definitely look into the ATHA700s I've had a500s and a900s and just love the line and they're great for long hours of gaming.

DVDFlick seems like a decent free one to use. It worked fine for me the one time I tried it.

If the information is that important, I should hope you are recommending a good backup solution. Regardless of how well put together the laptop is, hard drives die all the time. I'd suggest a good RAID usb enclosure with a regular backup process in place.
