    Network MP3 Player

I have my house pretty much setup for a combined system. With 1 Server, 2 HTPCs which play stored audio and video. However I'm looking for something to play MP3s from the server in a bedroom. Silence is priority 1. I was thinking a via mini sized board with a small case and small LCD...

    Samsung 205BW Owner's/Review thread

Has anyone else had problems finding these in stock? I picked up 1 on Monday on Newegg to check out the quality. Since it ecxeeded my expectation I went back to pick up another and they were sold out. I couldn't find it at either zipzoomfly or directron either. Seems like its not in stock at...

2 PCs, 1 set of speakers.

I want to listen to 2 PCs through 1 set of speakers(5.1). From what I've read I should be looking for a mixer. Are there any other options such as maybe a bunch of Y splitters?

    Need some Hardware Help

I was planning on having 2 cards. 1 of which would need to be dual DVI the other could be single(which I have a few of laying around). Most if not all the dual DVI cards at newegg are overkill for my use. Just looking to save a few bucks. Not sure if I'll sell the NF7, Its been with me...

    Need some Hardware Help

I'm looking to upgrade(replace) my HTPC, NF7-S w/ Athlon 2500. For a MB I was looking at ABIT AN9 32X, although its somewhat overkill but meets the reqs of 6+ sata slots, raid 5 capable, and dual nics. For a CPU I'll be going as cheap as possible. For a tuner I'm leaning toward a...

    PC won't renew IP address

I run a Linksys WRT54G router on my homenetwork. With 2 XP boxes connected by wire, 1 of them works fine the other constantly has issues. Physically the router and cables are fine because if I switch the cable between PCs the good PC always works. The bad PC can't renew its IP address, it...

    RoadRunner of Verizon FIOS

They are installing Verizon FIOS in my area, looks like I can get 15Mbps/2Mbps for what $45 a month. Much better than the 5Mbps/386Kbps that road runner gives me. Is there anything hidden or wrong with FIOS that would make it a bad change?

    ROM machine to TV

Just curious but since hes going to be playing ROMS, why would you need the quality of DVI. Don't get me wrong I use a DVI-HDMI cable for my setup but thats because I want the quality. If all I was playing was ROMs and wanted something cheap I'd go for S-Video.

Can't get second Hauppage 150 working

I'm stumped on this one, although I think it has something to do with memory aloocation or IRQs. My HTPC is built on an abit k8n, and is running winXP SP2. I have 2 hauppage 150s, and can get either to work in the system alone, in either of the 2 pci slots. However whenever I try to...

Purchase NOW or LATER (Opteron 170)

Not much of an OC, but at 1.36V my 0541RPMW 170 is stable. I actually didn't intend to OC it so soon but I didn't change the BIOS settings when I took out the old CPU. Running 2 instances of Pi the temp leveled out at 41CPU. Cooling is a Scythe Ninja, no fan. Hopefully I'll have time this...

    File server for 4-5 people

We have an old file server at work. Has a P3 700. OS is on a pair of mirrored drives, storage is on 4 drives in RAID 5 the SCSI card has 256MB of cache. It doesn't get much use now, as we have 3 newer larger capacity file servers. However some users still access it and us techs throw...

how long before BTX takes over?

Inetl trys to pull these new standards every once in a while. The last time they tryed it was a more condensed and stadardized front panel header, there were a few MB and cases that supportsed it. But it soon faded away.

What to do w/ old Laptop?

I saw the projector project some time ago. I'd like to try it but I have no place for one in my house. Also I'm not sure how well the laptop would work since the system is quite limited and not easily upgradable. I'm not inteested in selling it because of the historic value. Currently I...

The UnOfficial Black Friday "Camping-Meetup-Gettogether" Thread

Yesterday I wnt to the mall for the first time in 2-3 months, they opened a Circuit City. Good thing to cause the first floor was lacking in electronics stores. Right above it is BestBuy and the basement has CompUSA. I may stop in if the deals are right.

What to do w/ old Laptop?

A long time ago I got my first PC, an IBM laptop 600Mhz, 64MB ram. Not all too bad for back in the day, especailly after I threw in another 128 of RAM(my first upgrade). About a year later I upgraded and built my own system. I then gave away the laptop to a fmaily member. Well last week I...

Got some spare time? Ultimate Server, no budget.

If its just web, email and, ftp stuff you don't need a ton of crunching power, you should focus on storage capabilities. Large RAID arrays and the like. You don't need huge collections of processors unless your going to do some hardcore processing. Rendering, sorting, simulations and some...

    Dual Samsung 19" CRTs

My old 17 was an envision, the 15 was...old(very old). I liked the lack of frontal buttons on the 997s. I like the picture frame look. Availability was another issue.

    Dual Samsung 19" CRTs

My X800 has a VGA out and a DVI out, used a DVI-AGP adapter and am dual monitors. I've been using a dual setup for almost 3 years now, this is my first matched pair. Going from a 17" and 15" to this is simply amazing. Much crisper than before as well.

Logitech Z680s for a home theatre sound system?

I used to have the 560s in my dorm room. The first time I cranked them up(75%) was to watch Saving Private Ryan. I had people coming up from the first floor(I was on the third). The beach scene was ridiculous, you could feel all the mortal strikes. I've since grown and only have a...

Using a GPU to cruch seti/fold

I don't think there would be a problem with any system protection faults. The video card almost constantly sends data back to the CPU. 1 of the major benefits of PCIE is its fullduplex so more data can move between GPU and the CPU. The problem with coprocessing will be the GPU itself...

Itching to upgrade..what's on the horizon?

SATA has already been released, the only benefit of SATA2 will be the drop in price of SATA. Hard Drives can't even utilize the current bandwidth, doubleing it will have little effect. PCIX is old and obscure. PCIE however will be out sometime in May. How long until theres product on the...

    Digital Camera as Webcam...NikonI' 2200/3200

Is it possible to use a digital camera as a webcam. I have no experience in the area but it seems that it should have everything required to be used as one. Also since my POS Olympus digital camera died I'm looking for a replacement. Right now I'm eyeing the Nikon Coolpix 2200/3200. If...

    MX700 mouse not recharging

My mouse is very picky about its place in the cradle. I often have to drop it in 2-3 times before it will "take". Make sure the mouse LEd goes off and the green charging light comes on, if not drop it in until it works. My friend has the same problem, and I've heard of others with similar...

    Fridge Case

Most of the people who have tried submersion have longer standoffs to hold the parts off the bottom. This would allow water to gather at the bottom and not short anything. I'm guessing water would actually stay at the top for the most part. Oil has pretty high surface tension. A small drop...

    Fridge Case

The fridge idea has 2 main problems. 1 the fridge isnt designed to remove as much heat as a computer produces. Second is condensation. We'll solve the condensation issue first. 1, Seal up the inside, this means making sure the stock seal is perfect, then cover it in duct tape to be...

    Sound Dampening a Sonata?

My current Sonata has a Mag3 and 3 92mmx38mm Deltas (100+ CFM, 56dcb each). First thing I did what to undervolt the fans to 5V. It made the noise go from jet engine to normal computer. I realized alot of the sound comes from the case vibrating. I'd heard of people using a kind of roofing tar...

Matrix Orbital MX-2 -- display multimeter votlages?

I like the idea of a hardware volt display. However I don't like the idea of an exterior pot to control voltage. Fan controls are designed to be easy to change. If you accidently turn a knob on the rheobus that controls CPU voltage you could easily fry your cpu. Or if someone else didn't...
