It is well documented that RAID is not a form of backup. But with large arrays, what is a valid backup? If you have a 50TB array, what is there to back up to except...a RAID array? Do cloud backup options use some other form of redundant data storage?
I am upgrading my NAS. I am using the USB 3.0 port on the front of the NAS. I copied all the data off onto some spare HDDs and a 4TB SSD. Copying speeds off the NAS to the HDD and SSD were good. Copying speed of the data back onto the NAS was good for the HDD. However, copying back onto the...
System:
MoBo with PCI-X slot
16 1TB HDD in RAID 10 with ext4 partition
1 PCI-X 16-port RAID controller
Scenario:
MoBo fails.
Question:
Would the data be recoverable if I could not get another MoBo with a PCI-X? Instead, I use the SATA ports on a new MoBo, a PCI and a PCIe SATA controller card...
Have you ever had time to play a game and you end up spending most of the time deciding what game to play? Once decided, you find that your free time is almost done.
I am transferring 82.6 GB worth of video to my NAS. The laptop uses WiFi 6e, the router is WiFi 6e. From there, a 2.5 Gbps connection to my NAS. Yet I am getting between 51KB/s and 6.8MB/s. The only other traffic going on at the moment is Youtube streaming to my Roku. Internet speed tests...
What PC game defined you as a PC gamer? I do not mean what was your first PC game, but with what PC game did you consider yourself a PC Gamer?
For me, King's Quest V
I have always played with the music disabled. Despite some games having excellent soundtracks such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and World of Warcraft. It interferes with my ability to listen to the area around me.
What about you?
What is your Windows version timeline for your primary PC? No dates, just the versions.

We recently hired a person who uses a Macbook Pro. And has been using Apple products since the late '90s. So we purchased a Macbook Pro for him for business use back in February. $$$$. Supposed to arrive this month, but we got a notice that it's on backorder till June. Why are Macbooks so...
Just made an interesting discovery with Far Cry 5. It works with Corsair iCue. I noticed that whenever I finished a quest, the pattern on my memory, fans, and CPU cooler would flash in a red, white, and blue pattern. Then it would go back to normal
Remember the days of boxed PC games. A shelf like this would wrap around an entire GameStop, Electronics Botique, or Babbages. Best Buy, CompUSA, Incredible Universe, and Fry's would have large areas of their stores dedicated to boxed PC games and apps. Nowadays you'd be lucky to find the...
Ever play the arcade games Tempest or Starwars from the early '80s? I did. Ever wonder about cathode-ray tube (CRT) technology from back then? Raster CRTs are what we are all used to. But there is another which few people are familiar with, Vector CRT. This video from the Slow Mo Guys shows...
Just found out about the GTA Trilogy DE and bought it today. Saw numerous other threads about it but none with a poll
While I have played them all, VC has always been my favorite. Partially because of the soundtrack. Every time I hear the song I Ran by Flock of Seagulls, this video comes to mind
50 years ago, Intel introduced the world to the first microprocessor, the Intel 4004.
The grandfather of CPUs started the computer revolution and led the way to the digital world we know today.
Without it we could still be playing board games, creating all those documents and spreadsheets by...
Strange situation here. The new system I put together, freezes once every few hours when being used casually (nothing in the event viewer). But when gaming, video encoding, or anything else that puts a load on the CPU, it has never frozen. I tested this by running some burn-in software all...
My gaming system uses two LG 27GL650F-B. I disconnected one to briefly install an OS on another system and configure for remote access. When I reconnected it, I go the Out of Range message, but still had video. Officially, the monitor supports up to 1920x1080. It now shows 4K as the...
LAN gateway IP on new ISP-provided gateway/router must remain 192.168.1.254 in order for me to retain write access to it. (I don't know why)
IP config before the new ISP gateway/router was 192.168.2.0/24. I do not want to change all the static IPs on the LAN
IP range I am trying to configure...

What wattages for this equipment would you suggest? I tried some online calcs, but they all show less than 500W?
Ryzen 7 5800X
RTX 2060
ATX X570 chipset
3x M.2 SSD
2x 16GB DDR4 4000
Any other components that should be considered as significant power usage?
I have video files that have extreme volume differences during different events. Turn it up to hear the dialog then an action event comes up that annoys the neighbors. Is there a way to level out the audio or reduce it to not exceed a certain Db?
I found some old laptops that still work fine but the HDD is wiped. Both have 4GB RAM. CPUs are a Core 2 Duo T5500 and a Celeron 205. I installed the latest version of Linux Mint and it is running rather slow. Is there another flavor someone could suggest that will run Libre Office and web...
We are planning to implement a wifi bridge across our house. We once had one setup when 802.11g was the fastest, but when we got internet >50Mbps down, we switch to the cable. Now that there are WiFi speeds beyond 1Gb/s, we are getting rid of the cable and going to a bridge again.
Any...
I have a chosen software for video/audio conversion and video URL downloading. I am opening more space on my HDD. I need software that can convert audio formats to .mp3 @ 128 kbps. I have a lot that are .flac or .mp3 @ 320 kbps.
The key setting I need is to be able to take the whole folder...
With Flash now officially ended and blocked on web browsers, is there any standalone app that can run .swf files? I am trying to find a way to play Fishy!
I received the chair below for Christmas, the seat is wide enough, but lower parts that jut forward from the back are squeezing my lower torso when I lean back.
Yitahome gaming chair
Could anyone suggest one with a wider back and/or the sides don't stick out as much?
This is my old chair.

I have a NAS on my LAN and I would like to link the custom music folder to the mp3's on the NAS. Shortcuts won't work. Is a symbolic link required? If so, how do I do that?
UPDATE: Apparently such links only work locally and not to a shared folder. I copied them over instead
I suddenly began to get very slow internet speed, sporadic connections, then complete disconnect. Logged into my router and instead of the usual external IP address, I had 192.168.100.20. I released and renewed and got a normal IP back. Any clue what could cause that?
I have a NAS with BTRFS. I also have show hidden files enabled in Windows Explorer. Because of this, files that start with "._" (resource fork of BTRFS files) are visible. I want to make it so that the resource fork files remain hidden on the NAS, but not locally. Is this possible?
I am piecing out a plan for upgrading my 6TB HDD to 3x 2TB in JBOD or RAID 0
Last year I put together a new system
MSI MPG X570 Gaming Edge
AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
32 GB DDR4
MSI RX 5700 Mech OC
Corsair Force MP600 (500GB)
Moved 6TB libraries/game HDD to the new system
So what I am looking to do...
How do I determine how many floating-point operations per cycle my CPU is able to do? I have the rest of the formula to determine the FLOPS.
sockets * (cores per socket) * (number of clock cycles per second) * (number of floating-point operations per cycle).
I am charting FLOPS from past...
