Apologies if this thread should be in a different sub-forum, and if so, a mod is free to move it accordingly.
That being said, take a look at the system in my sig. What do you think it's worth? I may be in a position to cross over to the dark side and get a 27" iMac for Christmas, and I...
winstalyn
combo of my two ferrets' names, winston and rosalyn (although rosalyn has since passed away, bless her heart, and has a successor named wilma)
processmonitor is showing "NAME NOT FOUND" results for the following:

HKCU\Software\Classes\CLSID\{36EEF7DB-88AD-4E81-AD49-0E313F0C35F8}...
yeah, i ran that. (it was another thing i found whilst googling.)
result: Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
i even thought maybe i had a virus or some malware, but both mse and malwarebytes turned up nothing.
i am beyond stumped at this point.
on the topic of minecraft lego skins, check this one out. it's probably the best you're gonna get.

is anyone else having difficulty getting this update to install?
i always get error code 800736B3 when trying to install, and i've tried every single fix i can find (googled the hell outta this issue, hah), all to no avail.
the only "fix" that sort of worked was to run the "system update...
forgot to come back to this thread with an update.
except for my apparent boneheaded-ness with the shipping, everything went very smoothly. thank you gskill!
i did go to the ups store, by the way, and i won't be going there again. on top of getting hosed on pricing, it took them a full week...
gskill was indeed very quick to respond to my RMA request. already got my RMA # and i shipped out the RAM via UPS this morning.
it cost $21.67 USD to ship it UPS ground, so yeah, definitely cheaper than buying a new kit. :p
just finished sending the rma request form.
i'll update the thread as the process moves forward. perhaps the next time someone is considering an rma with gskill they'll stumble upon this thread and can use my experience as a resource.
i did a bit more research myself and am expecting a...
i ordered an 8gb kit (2x4) of ddr3 1600 (gskill ripjaws) from newegg back in april of last year, 4/2/12 to be exact. i stuck it into the system in my sig along with another 4gb kit (2x2) of gskill that was already in the system from the time it was built.
both kits have always been run at...
to be honest, i'm still a little leary of that ocz psu. if i stick with the seasonic, then there's no way i could go with the gtx 670. in fact, i'll probably have to drop from the 7950 to the 7870.
i promised my friend i could build him a killer rig for $1000 or less. he was originally...
what do you guys think of this psu?
OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W Modular High Performance Power Supply
it's $30 cheaper than the seasonic, but only 600w instead of 650w. i have absolutely no experience with ocz components, so i'm a little unsure as to the quality. i believe either wattage...
it's funny you brought up the hdd, athenian. i was already thinking the same thing and have since adjusted the build down to a 500gb mechanical drive.
although i've thoroughly extolled the virtues of an ssd, he doesn't want to spring for one up front. he's so used to his crappy laptop, that...
appreciate all the feedback folks. keep it coming.
i especially want to wish everyone a merry christmas!
i happen to be alone (just the way it happened to work out for today, so it's not as bad as it sounds), so i'm spending my time playing around with the new chromebook (samsung series 3...
i understand that crossfire is wasted on a single 1080p monitor, but he's not gonna go crossfire right off the bat. he'll go crossfire when he has a little more dough to spread around between a second monitor (for eyefinity) and a second card. i'm trying to build him a system now with some...
any mobo recommendations since you don't like asrock? any particular reason you don't like asrock, btw?
thanks for the cheaper burner. probably the least important component of all, so might as well save as much as possible there.
i talked it over with him re: going aftermarket or stock with...
haha, this thread really blew up. no worries with the derailing. i enjoy a good discussion just as much as the next geek.
to settle the GPU debate, my friend currently plays a lot of minecraft mostly because his crappy laptop can't handle the latest games. he absolutely wants to get into...
thanks for all the help folks! danny, your input is especially appreciated. i know you're the resident gen hardware guru and you always take the time to weigh in on build threads. :)
one last quick question for you. why the 1333 ram? doesn't the z77 chipset run at 1600 natively? or are...
I had another chat with my friend and here's the scoop.
He is NOT interested in overclocking. He's changed his mind and WOULD like to have the option to go crossfire/sli somewhere down the road.
So I'm going to keep the 650W PSU for future gfx card scalability. I can bump down the CPU...
hello all!
i'm trying to build a gaming rig for a friend. he has absolutely zero parts to use/re-use as a starting point. he's going to be using the rig primarily for gaming, and he'll be looking to power a 23" display at 1920x1080. he's expressed to me that he doesn't care about...
12.8 is running great for me on a single 6870. i had rolled back to 12.4 after 12.6 and 12.7 caused bsod's (and this annoying delay where my display wouldn't scale to full screen for a good minute or two upon boot up), but 12.8 has given me zero problems.
thumbs up amd. :)
i've been getting numerous BSODs lately, and i'm fairly certain it's a result of these newer cats. i was running 12.4 and then i (stupidly) decided to "upgrade" to the 12.6 cats. photoshop cs5 started giving me an error about gpu acceleration so i tried "upgrading" once more to the 12.7 beta...
i just upgraded from a 5770 to a 6870. rest of system specs are in my sig. i intend to game at 1920x1080. i haven't gamed much since bfbc2 was still "fresh" so it's been awhile. :p
i'm wondering what a good baseline would be as far as what settings to use under 3d application settings in...
hah, i highly doubt there's any real need to boot into safe mode. i'm just a dinosaur and i always do things like driver updates or reg tweaks or what have you in an especially careful manner.
plus, i'm only a limp gawd after 9.2 years, so there's that... :D
i suppose i'll steer clear of driver sweeper then. it would seem it's more outdated than i had thought.
i'll just boot into safe mode and uninstall from: control panel -> programs and features -> amd catalyst install manager and then do a fresh driver install after i've put the new card in...
well, i wasn't going to use any old sweeper. i was referring specifically to guru3d's "driver sweeper" utility.
so that's one yes and one no on the sweep, heh.
i just want to be sure to avoid any and all conflicts after the upgrade.
i currently have a 5770. i'm about to replace it with a 6870. should i do a full driver uninstall and also run driver sweeper before i install the new card?
heh, so now i'm torn between:
6870 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150521&Tpk=N82E16814150521
gtx 560 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130661&Tpk=N82E16814130661
if they're gonna be relatively similar in performance, which one would...
how about coming from a 5770?
my res is 1920x1080, single monitor. i'm trying to stay sub $200, as close to $150 as possible.
right now i'm a little torn between a 6870 and a 7770. looking at these:

for those having trouble with the windows installer, this was suggested over on the crucial forums:
this worked for me. i was trying to run the updater from a secondary hdd, to no avail. moved it to my os drive and all was well.
i'll need to do a bit more testing to be sure, but i *think* i've solved the issue.
and boy... was this a silly (yet sooo simple) fix!
all i did was adjust my power profile such that hdd's turn off 10 minutes before the computer goes to sleep. before i had the hdd's set to never turn off, and...
windows updates are current
drivers are all current (chipset, sata - both intel and mobo, video, network, etc)
firmware on the ssd is current (which shouldn't be an issue anyway since these errors are occurring on a secondary hdd)
i flashed the most current bios revision before installing the...
i spoke to soon... :(
the issue is back today. i woke from sleep, entered my password, and then tried to click on an icon on my taskbar and explorer hung for a good minute or more. the logon sound was delayed again, too.
is there anything else i'm missing? i'd really hate to have to...
even though the OP has made his choice, for anyone else reading this thread who's trying to decide on an ssd, if you're looking at the 128GB size, m4 all the way baby!
i just picked one up last week and with a fresh install of win7, i'm cruisin'! :)
i happened to get mine when newegg dropped...
the issue is with any of my user directories, my documents, my pictures, etc. and there's something else i've just realized. if i've just freshly booted, there's no problem. after i wake the computer from sleep though, the issue presents itself. i have to reboot after waking or else i get...
my os (win7 pro x64 sp1) is on an ssd, and all of my user folders (except for appdata) are on a secondary hdd. i keep getting "acess denied" errors when trying to open folders and files in my user directories.
i checked permissions and my user account (an admin account) has ownership...
