Buying a WD 500GB drive on Monday, I have questions

Actually, you can use a regular RE drive in non-RAID applications. The only caveat that you'll face is the drive will only spend up to seven seconds attempting to recover data from a bad sector. Regular desktop (SE) drives spend up to several minutes attempting to recover data from bad...

    The Future Of AMD Procs

I remember hearing rumors about this over six months ago. The latency issues of DDR-2 amongst others is a real deal-killer for AMD. G-DDR3 looks like where AMD will probably take its future processors, however official memory standards need to be hammered out as well as general memory pricing...

    Show Your LCD(s) setups!!!

I run at 1366x768. If there is any blur, it's probably because that photo was a 1/4-second exposure in a dimly-lit room (hence the orange tint). I tried using the flash but I got a huge glare strobe in the lower left corner of the monitor when I did that.

    Show Your LCD(s) setups!!!

No, I actually sit about 3-4 feet away from it most of the time. It totally changed how I used my computer. I don't sit in front of my machine and type away, now I lay back in an office chair and put my feet up on the keyboard tray :D About the desk: I think I got it from Staples back in...

what lcd wipes do you guys use?

I bought the same thing for my LCD TV. Works great as it comes with a spray bottle of cleaning solution and a pretty big cleaning cloth. At work I got a set of microfibre cloths and a Kensington LCD cleaner. I think Staples sells it for pretty cheap--it works creat for cleaning laptops!

    Show Your LCD(s) setups!!!

Hope this works: Sharp LC-37G4U LCD HDTV. I have a Shuttle SN45G hidden behind it but I'm thinking about replacing it with a Mac mini. That would only be slightly larger than the audio control of my Klipsch 5.1 Ultra speakers.

Any news on 939 PCIe based SFFs?

That's not a bad idea and I poured over that suggestion a lot several months ago. I came to the same conclusion that I did about the SN95G5 - sure it's faster but my games still look the same. Yes I know it's $60-100 for the chip vs a whole new system with the SN95G5 but if I wait a little bit...

You think dual-core will come in s939 flavor?

OK, I reread the article where I had originally got my information. If this information is correct then it looks like the upcomming dual core processors will share a single memory controller (I had thought it was two). Go here for Overclockers.com impression of that same article. That...

You think dual-core will come in s939 flavor?

Socket 939/940 dual cores will basically be a dual processor setup with only one chip that has direct access to the memory. Actually we already have this now as some of the early dual processor Opteron motherboards featured that limitation. Performance wasn't hit that bad but at least it...

    DVI analog/digital output

There are fixes but mainly it is because the nVIDIA drivers forcefully adhere to the EDID and its' limitations. I've received some feedback from some people at nVIDIA and they said that MS requires them to utilize the EDID data if they want to pass WHQL certification. Don't know if it's true...

Any news on 939 PCIe based SFFs?

I too am waiting for SFF 939 + PCIe. I'm currently running a Shuttle SN45Gv1 with a Barton 2500+ @ 2000MHz and a GeForce 6800GT (ultra bios). I would get a nice speed boost if I upgraded to a SN95G5, however since I'd be running the same video card, my video games would be faster but they...

    S-VIDEO to Widescreen HDTV. Limitations?

The ForceWare notes says that 1024x768 is the maximum for S-Video. Be aware that there are issues with nVIDIA and HDTVs when using DVI.

30 inch LCD TV gaming... why won't it work?

I've used a Sharp LC-37G4U for about three months now and the only problem I had was that it took a lot of work getting it to display at it's native resolution on nVIDIA cards. Other than that it works like a dream. :)

Played Doom3 on a 30 inch LCD TV tonight...

I aggree that you should definately look at the display before making a purchase, but I do not believe that it is necessary to take your computer into the store before making a purchase. As long as you know it is PC compatible and it is possible to get a PC to run at the panel resolution, then...

Played Doom3 on a 30 inch LCD TV tonight...

Large screen HDTV and an HDTV is a wonderful combination. I personally use a 37" Sharp LC-37G4U. I don't have Doom III yet, but my target resolution is 1368x768. I do play Halo at that resolution though. ATi video cards work great but nVIDIA cards may have issues when used with HDTVs.

So, what settings are you hoping for Doom3?

In order to sidestep scaling issues and resolution problems I'll probably wind up running at 848x480 on my BFG 6800 GT. Hope 4X AA and 8X Aniso can clean up the pixellated wunder that I wind up with. :(

why the dell 2001fp sucks (in pictures!)

Screen door effect on LCDs? How close do you guys sit to your monitors? Then again the dot pitch on the Dell 2001FP is 0.25mm. If you sit less than 2 feet from the monitor then yeah, I guess it would be noticable. I have a Sharp LC-37G4U and I cannot see the pixels unless I'm 7" from the...

why the dell 2001fp sucks (in pictures!)

Dual monitors? Are you talking about using one monitor to get 1368x768 going then attach another monitor via DVI to the video card and clone the desktop from the first monitor to the second? I'm not having any problems driving my monitor, ie getting it to display at all. My problem is...

why the dell 2001fp sucks (in pictures!)

Actually LCDs and plasmas can suffer from both image retension and permanent burn-in. LCDs don't have any phosphors so they cannot burn in per-se, however they can have long-lasting effects if the screen has a DC electrical leakage problem. LCD burn in is exorbantly rare but still happens...

Problem with my HP L2335, HELP!!!!!

ATi cards don't seem to have any problem. I finally got some response from nVIDIA on the matter but they wouldn't give me a firm answer as to whether or not they would fix the problem. They did say they would fix the 1280x720 -> 1280x768 scaling bug, but that's not what I'm complaining about. :(

Max resolution with 6800GT's on DVI?

Officially: 1600x1200 Unofficially: Whatever mode you want to run via custom resolution tab. Actually: Take a good hard look at the EDID information on your monitor. The maximum resolution listed in your EDID timings is where the ForceWare drivers draw the line. You will get nothing...

nVidia 6800 and DVI resolutions > 1280x1024 HELP!?!

My problem is my monitor's EDID only goes up to 1280x1024 and anything beyond that gets me a virtual desktop. Long story short, I talked to one of BFG tech support's level 3 tech guys and he said nVIDIA is aware of the issue, however they have not commited to a driver release or any time frame...

When I run at 1600x1200 via DVI, my monitor blows up and says that it can't say that resolution (as it should!). However when I try that on my GeForce 6800 GT, I get a Windowed desktop. Why do I care? Because my monitor's EDID information says that the maximum resolution it supports is...

    1366 x 768 Help!

1280x1024 will be your maximum resolution via DVI unless the EDID information of your plasma TV says otherwise. Via analog (VGA) you don't have this limitation because the nVIDIA drivers don't use the EDID information as the framework for generating resolutions. 1368x768 is a real...

    1366 x 768 Help!

If you hook up your TV via DVI you will be limited to 1280x1024 by CURRENT nVIDIA driversand unless your plasma TV has support for 1368x768 in the EDID information of the monitor. monitor or video card?

If the monitor is flickering on and off, then it's probably the picture tube. I've heard of that happening to several monitors at work and seen it myself a few times. Not any easy fix, but definately a good reason for RMA. If you're out-of-warranty you can try to get it repaired but it'll...

nVidia 6800 and DVI resolutions > 1280x1024 HELP!?!

You're exactly right, however the reason why I believe my problems to be related to the card or the ForceWare drivers is because I get pan & scan mode for everything above 1280x1024. Technically my Sharp TV does not have the capability to display resolutions higher than that and it should...

nVidia 6800 and DVI resolutions > 1280x1024 HELP!?!

PowerStrip or RivaTuner have EDID dump features. If your EDID was done right, the maximum resolution of your monitor should match what the actual resolution of the screen. However in my case, Sharp was lazy and and capped the EDID at 1280x1024. Luckily for me that didn't prevent my old ATi...

I agree with everything you said except this: I disagree because I believe the two issues are actually linked. I cannot run ANY resolution greater than 1280x1024 and if I do, I get a windowed Virtual Desktop. Below 1280x1024, I can run virtually any resolution to my heart's desire...

No, you have to make 1368x768 on your own in the "Change Resolutions" flyout tab. I also tried PowerStrip and Rivatune, but in any case every time I try to set my monitor above 1280x1024 I get a pan & scan Virtual Desktop that's windowed to 1280x1024 or 1280x768. If there isn't a solution...
