I'm a righty and used the Intellimouse Optical for a long time also.
I prefer symmetrical shaped mice so when it came time to get a new one I tried the MS Laser 6000 wired but found it to be a bit too flat and uncomfortable.
Then I found the Microsoft Sidewinder X3. For me it's as...

I bought one of the True 380W a few months ago for a buddy's system, picked it up local and it did have the stronger 20+ amp (can't remember the exact #) 12V rail. They should all be newer models, but YMMV.
These truepower 380's are pulled from new Antec Sonata cases so they only have one fan.
Do you have the Creative Speaker Settings program installed? You can use that to switch between headphones and speakers. That's what I use and it adjusts the sounds for you.
You can disable CMSS if you have the EAX console installed.
You can select what apps you want to install or just window drivers by choosing to do a custom install. I like having at least the Surround Mixer and Speaker Settings apps installed.
It's up to you what you want installed though.
I believe CMSS is mainly used for music and doesn't affect games. EAX should handle the 3d sounds in games.
The hiss might be from having your volume set too high.
Download the latest drivers from Creative. It says update on their site, but you don't actually need any previous drivers installed.
Remove any old drivers you have installed and when Windows tries to install it's own drivers, click cancel. Then install the Audigy drivers.
This used to be a good deal when they first came out, but now retail prices are similar so you're not really saving any money. Plus shipping is crazy from ATi, I think it was like $15 for ground service.
you'll need a software decoder to watch DVD's. Like MScrip mentioned, WinDVD and PowerDVD are good choices.
Before you reinstalled XP, what program were you using to play DVD's?
lol funny you mention that xonik, just yesterday my Audigy 2 decided to stop working and I tried reinstalling it and the drivers but to no success. I move it to another PCI slot and bingo everything works again.
splooger: did you check your sound and mixer settings to see if they're not muted?
