Not to be an ass, but do you have any way of providing verification? I mean, this is the Internet after all, and while it doesn't make a world of sense that someone would just pick this up it would still be nice to know.

    WHS 2011

I've got 2011 running in a VM right now before I install it on my server, but so far it seems like a pretty solid upgrade from v1. I'm currently using 2008 r2 and 2011 isn't really any different other than lacking some of the roles (full blown ADS). So far I've been able to set up SABnzbd and...

    Smoothwall and Active Directory

Sorry I didn't specify more. I meant the latter, how to make sure the two play nice with the necessary DNS configurations. The last time I configured a domain controller was... lets see... about 8 years ago in my Win 2k Admin class. It has definitely been awhile. I've been wanting to configure...

    Smoothwall and Active Directory

I've been looking at configuring ADS on my server running 2008 R2 and I was looking for some advice on properly configuring it at my smoothwall to work properly. The information I've been finding so far on Google University has been old and doesn't seem to match up to SmoothWall Express...

    Core i7 930 vs Xeon W3520

I've found some comparisons since it seems that the Xeon's are becoming more popular for workstation machines, but again, nothing solid. I know that Dell has them in their Precision workstation series and I've seen a number of forum threads about people using them on A/V workstations. The bits...

    Core i7 930 vs Xeon W3520

I'm actually in a similar debate, though I'm considering the E5620 (2.4ghz, 32nm, 12mb L3 cache) and I'm having problems finding solid reviews comparing the i7's and the westmere xeon's. Wasn't sure if the e5620 would be better/worse than the i7 930.

    Post your Smoothie/ipcop/etc. specs

I have that server (though when I bought mine, it was a combo deal and not pre-built), and it works perfectly using smoothwall. I tried using Endian but it wasn't detecting the cards, and as it turned out there wasn't built-in drivers. I did find a guide to downloading and compiling the drivers...

New Office - Server Room Updates #2

Great job overall, especially on the wiring. My rack at home is nowhere near that clean! But I agree with the others that you put the money in the right places. If you can get away with saving a buck on using standard desktop equipment instead of expensive server grade stuff, go for it.

pfsense in vmware on whs.. second nic for dedicated file sharing?

It's definitely an intriguing idea... Thinking about moving my smoothwall onto my file server. Just not sure since I use my file server for converting video files to play on my phone/iPod.

Western Digital 1.5TB WD15EADS HD Owners...

So far the only issue I've had is on some 1080p mkv movies I've ran into some skipping. Haven't been able to figure out why. It's not the network (running an Intel server NIC in SLA), and the device (xtreamer) played flawlessly before. The only real different in the system is the RAID controller...

Western Digital 1.5TB WD15EADS HD Owners...

Just an update, got 4 of the WD15EADS drives from Newegg. Installed them as soon as they came in and one of the drives has bad blocks when I started to build the array. Went ahead and built it with the other 3 and everything works great. Getting the drive replaced from newegg and will add it to...

    Post your Smoothie/ipcop/etc. specs

Is the board using the Realtek 8111c chipset? I recently rebuilt my router with a Supermicro board w/ an Atom 330 and had a bitch of a time with that chipset. Endian doesn't have driver support for it yet (uses the Realtek 8169 driver) but Smoothwall worked fine. There are some instructions out...

Western Digital 1.5TB WD15EADS HD Owners...

i'm looking at picking up 4 of these drives as they are on the compatibility list for my raid card (adaptec 5805z). seems like most of the issues i've been hearing these days are due to cards not playing nicely with drives and causing problems. at least that's my observation.

    LAN Party Networking

keenan's totally right on all counts. I picked up two 24-port Netgear gigabit switches (GS724T) for $50 a piece on Ebay last year. You can always find some sort of sweet deal on there and it's well worth the money spent for a LAN. I've used these at a small LAN recently (50-60 people) and they...

    Macbook pro (unibody) screen flicker

i took mine in on Saturday for repair. I was getting a single line flicker across my screen and was also having issues with it locking up. Server upgrade - Your opinions?

File serving, newsgroup downloading, streaming to my media center, vmware server, and some other odd and end stuff. enough stuff that i'd want to run something beefier than a pentium dual-core. i figured going with desktop equipment over server equipment would save some money and let me get a...

    Server upgrade - Your opinions?

if i keep the 5130's i only need to replace the motherboard. the issue is that the motherboard i have now doesn't have any expansion slots so i can't add a raid card and more drives. the server motherboard i'm looking at is only $250 (asus DSBF-D16). though it's not hard to find a desktop mobo...

    Server upgrade - Your opinions?

I want to upgrade my server to add a RAID card and more hard drives. Currently I am limited by two things: 1) the motherboard is designed for a 1U case and is currently in a 4U case 2) the current case doesn't support more than 5 drives. Specs: (2) Intel Xeon 5130 Dual-core processors (2.0ghz...

    PFSense

Wow... it just got insanely heated around here... Unfortunately I can't really throw anything knowledge-wise into this argument (Cisco vs PFsense) other than the fact that if PFsense (or smoothwall, m0n0wall, etc...) were as good as Cisco or Juniper, then you'd see them in massive networks...

    New Juniper Router Install

Chances are it's some regional optical network. There are a bunch of them out there that have Lambda Rail in the name as well, though I guess it could just as easily be NLR, which would be the Global NOC as well. We like to do it all :)

How many of you are on MobileMe

As a side note, I just checked DropBox's website to see if they offered any pay plans for more place. for $99/year you can get 50gb of storage, and 100gb for $199/year. Just thought I'd share.

i've never used MobileMe (or it's predecessor .Mac) but I use Google apps + DropBox and I'm perfectly happy. 100 off technet

Yeah, it's saying I don't have an active subscription anymore (it expired on 3/10). Tried calling them earlier to use the other code and they said since I was past the "30 day grace period" that I had to purchase a new subscription. Which is funny considering I still get several calls a week...

    Disappointed with Untangle

I'm also running it on a 1ghz Athlon w/ 1gb of ram that didn't seem to like it much... but it loves smoothwall!
  39. C

    Disappointed with Untangle

I wasn't that impressed with Untangle either when I tried it. The whole thing seems bloated and cumbersome. I've been using Smoothwall for some time now and have been MUCH happier with it, though I've considered testing m0n0wall or Endian if I get the time.

Better to buy or rent your modem...

I've always rented my modems for the sheer fact that I don't want them blaming my equipment for problems any more than they already try to. Sure, I may have already bought that modem once or twice over but it's one less hassle when something does break. I've also found that as far as replacing a...
