 hello hello, old face, how are you doing?
hey man, good to see you're still going strong. college, you know, got busy, keep reinventing/"finding" myself, girls, the usual youthful shenanigans :p
an old (ish) folder, used to be a borging ninja...questionable, i know :o
and you? i take...
i realize this is a totally n00b question, but, help? i'd like to learn how to build websites. to me that means two things: one, learning how to program them, two, learning how to design them. by programming i'd mean making things like databases work, doing things with php (i don't even know...
[H]OldMarty post here anymore? didn't he have a friend/brother/rival too? i tried asking in the milestone thread, but so many new faces were doing so well the question got buried...
i know there were others back when i was active, is anyone there in the woodwork? i saw relic of all people...
hey everybody,
i'm sure this question gets asked a lot but i couldn't find an answer in a cursory look through the stickies, if i overlooked it i apologize.
i have a friend who ended up writing two full length novels which her brother deleted. clearly she'd love to get them back. what...
wrap the SATA connector (not the power connector but the SATA cable) in aluminum foil.
i don't know what generation your SATA drive is, but i had one of hte earlier generation ones and it was working fine, and then started messing up. they didn't shield the cables on those earlier ones.
i...
i used to post a ridiculous amount here; for me my passion (note, that's not the same as commitment) for folding has always gone in cycles, just came back recently and am absolutely dismayed to note that a purge has occurred.
many of the people whose characters i treasured are gone...
i would say Ad-Aware and Spybot are actually good things to have, if not essential. in my experience they can work wonders, especially Spybot's immunization option.
of course, make sure you run windows (or windiz) update.
i'm a little rusty here too, but Kerio Personal used to be good, wonder if it still is? it's worth checking out...
also heard okay things about BlackIce, i believe.
i would say 24hrs, unless "large ffts" is something different then what i've been used to doing? is "large ffts" the one that heats it up the most?
it also depends what your'e doing, if you're doing folding@home calculations then you should have a higher threshold for stability. if you're...
no problem, i'd get some fan monitoring software (i use smcFanControl) to crank those fans high enough so your comp doesn't get ridiculously hot.
gratz!
i got it to work. i used hte "client installer" here http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download and then used Increase to monitor it.
make sure when you run it from the terminal (you type ./ to run something , so ./fah6) you use the -smp flag (so ./fah6 -smp)
you don't need a HD to run a live version of linux...and iirc, DSL (damn small linux) can boot off a floppy disk, in which case you can run prime95
memtest doesn't stress the CPU, it is not an accurate measurement of CPU performance under load. prime 95 is, both because it heats the CPU up...
though there is lots of good advice here, i really appreciate the in-depth commentary and the overall festive community-oriented feel of system bulid guide articles. my vote for one if y'all have time too.
you should up the refresh rate on your monitor to the max of what is allowed or considered safe (it should automatically limit your options so you can't increase your refresh rate past that)
it's also possible your PSU is not delivering enough power, if you have a Kill-A-Watt you can test the voltage on the rails
if not, try subbing in another PSU if you have one
it shouldn't have anything to do with your CPU.
that's weird, this is going to sound frustrating, but i suggest uninstalling all your drivers, and installing your video card drivers first, and and only those. see if that fixes it. (it looks like you've passed memtest)
if that doesn't...
your video is onboard? not a separate card that you have to set in?
if it's a separate card, try re-seating it. also try rolling back drivers, or uninstalling drivers and installing the ones that came with your card (you should have gotten a cd with it).
alternatively, if your video is...
just how hot does the:
a) cpu temp get
b) case temp get
c) gpu temp get
?
if the extra cooling to your vid card doesn't help, try rolling back your vid card drivers to the edition that came with your video card, see if it works then. or try uninstalling/reinstalling drivers for your vid...
here's the external i have for my mac (it's a western digital mybook pro i have, i think; it's black and maybe 500GB?)
http://www.wdmybook.com/en/index.asp
i love my mybook, it runs well, not many issues with it, sometimes it doesn't quite turn on automatically and that's weird so i have to...
