I'm looking to upgrade my current HP 1810-24 v2 switch. I currently have a UBNT EdgeRouter X as well as several UBNT UAP-AC-LR access points. Right now I'm looking for something that supports layer 3 such as the Ubiquiti 24port EdgeMax (ES-24-LITE) or get a Cisco SG 300-28 28-port. Of these two...
Just recently moved up to a 8 bay Synology and now selling my Synology DS412+ with 4x 2TB Western Digital Red hard drives. The DS412+ has also been upgraded from 1GB to 2GB of RAM. $600

@Nicholas - I agree with you regarding your hesitation about using Host Profiles. I have used them back in the 5.0 days and noticed some quirkiness. That said it seems Auto Deploy uses them a lot and while I'm certainly not a PowerCLI guy - if you have any links or additional information...
In about 2-3 weeks time I will be receiving 24 new blades across 3 new chassis. Each blade consists of 4x E5-4640, 1.5TB RAM, 200GB SSD SAS, and 2x 2GB SD cards.
My idea is to use the SD cards to install ESXi 5.5 U2, and maybe use the SSD for some sort of caching if possible (we use FC...
Alex,
Having been in the same boat some time ago I'll share my thoughts. First I would contact several companies such as Dell, HP, 10zig, EVGA, Samsung, etc to have them each send you several units to demo. In most cases they are typically very happy to let you try their hardware.
Second would...
This isn't entirely true, your motherboard also must support VT-d along with the CPU as well. (source).
Most server boards do support VT-d but not all desktop motherboards.
@dbwillis, thanks for the link!
I did end up downloading the Essentials .ISO and spinning up a quick test VM. I was able to connect one RDP connection without being kicked off the console, the second RDP connection knocked out console.
They are going to be using this mostly as a file server so...
I agree, for just 2-3 VM's - workstation would work just fine.
If you're wanting to go the "hardware" route then an Intel NUC will certainly work. I use them in my home lab (http://miketabor.com/vmware-esxi-5-home-lab-upgrade/) and they perform beautifully for my needs.
I'm looking for a solution for a small business here in town, they are getting to the point where they need to have a small server to centrally locate files, printers, and so on. There are only 3 computers in the office so I'm thinking about going with either Server 2012 Foundation or...
I know we have a number of users here that use Synology NAS boxes in their home labs so I felt it was appropriate to share this.

I have several hosts that have RDM's (they are the bane of my existence) which is causing VERY slow ESXi boot times (4+ hours). I know there is a KB on how to fix this by running:
esxcli storage core device setconfig -d naa.id --perennially-reserved=true
And I've already created a script...
I've said it before and will say it again - with the list of names that make the vExpert I'm not sure how I'd be on there, but I'm honored to say I've made the list!
I guess I don't need a full Layer 3 switch but more so the VLAN routing similar to what's found on the HP 1910 switches.
@Mackintire - thanks, I'll look at the SG300. I'd prefer a 24 port but could get away with a 20 port.
@Dizzy - the HP 1910 appears to use fan. I'd like to remain fanless.
I currently use an HP 1810-24g v2 managed switch, it's fanless but only layer 2. I know HP has the 1910 but from what I can tell it has a fan.
Is there a fanless layer 3 switch that you would recommend?
One way that "might" work is to setup a profile how you'd like all desktops to appear. Then use something like Windows Enabler, which is used to enabled grayed out features - in this case the copy profile button in windows. To copy said profile to the "default profile" which may keep your...
I've not tried to dual purpose my NUC's but I do use the i5 NUC in my home lab running ESXi 5.5 without any issues.
CPU usage is about 10% running vcenter, SQL, Plex media server, AD, and a windows 7 and damn small linux desktops.
ESXi 5.5 no longer supports by default but you can still get the needed drivers from the VMware depot.
You'll need to allow httpClient on the host firewall:
Then run the following command from command line:
esxcli software vib install -d...
I really love that VMware does this even though I'm a bit intimated by it. Seeing people like Duncan Epping, Jason Nash, Frank Denneman, etc, etc, etc get this award - people on top of the top then I'm like "huh what can I do or share that they haven't?". Nonetheless still very neat that VMware...
Prefer VUM and had used VUM for other hosts. This particular evening I was trying to update hosts on another network than the VUM Server and was looking for another alternative while a firewall change request was being submitted.
Ultimately had to wait for the firewall change and now we're good...
Using the DRAC and mounting the ISO as a virtual drive isn't using command line. ;)
The contents of the ISO image and other zip bundles are completely different, it's not just a process of just changing the file format.
Yeah I seen that PDF but it doesn't mention anything similar to the command I've posted above. It seems there isn't a way to perform a similar command as above using an ISO image.
I have a Dell ESXi 5.1 host that I'd like to upgrade to 5.5 using the Dell VMware ESXi customized .ISO downloaded from Dell.com
I'm familiar with upgrading a host using the .zip bundle running a command such as:
esxcli software profile update -d...
I'm actually one of about two others that are VCP certified. All of which agree with me. However with this project (gov) the developers and management are making the rules. Sure I can change it but only to get my hand slapped and changed right back. All I can do and continue to show them data...
If I had the space for it I too would go with a C1100 or C6100 setup. All the sellers I've seen on eBay offer free shipping, not sure where you're seeing a $300 shipping charge.
It only gets better guys. In another insane move the developers and management has decided to move every other VM on one Dell M820 host and leave only this particular VM, still assigned 32vCPU's.
Apparently they are running some kind of benchmark test and believe they should be getting higher...
Correct me if I'm wrong but that 71% then has to be divided by 32 since the graph I posted above is a summation total and the VM has 32 CPU's.
71 / 32 = 2.22%
You are correct. This is a SQL box and the CPU Idle and Wait are nearly identical, the CPU's are not being used much at all. I'm stuck...
