Have you tried The Battle for Middle Earth 2? its actually a pretty good RTS game. I enjoyed the Risk style setup you could play in it. One of the new Dawn of War games did the same thing but not as well. Might want to give it a try.

I would recommend the Sennheiser PC 150's. Picked up a pair recently. They use a standard mic jack (can't stand USB headsets myself). Comfortable for hours, even with glasses on. Sound good and well within your price range to boot. -EDIT- May have to order them online or see if somewhere else...
