I shucked a bunch of 4TB Seagate Backup Plus drives years ago and was curious if I could put a new drive in the enclosure and it would just work? Like one of the Exos 18TB drives or something.
I have a standard, regular old 1080p TV, and don't plan on getting a new 4k TV anytime soon. I am thinking of getting a PS4 to play Horizon Zero Dawn. I may or may not play anything else. In this situation, do you think the Pro is worth the $100 extra over the Slim?
Thanks
Thanks for the input. I think I'll just stick to 5e. It's only 8 runs anyway, so if I have to do it over again at some point, oh well. None of my gear is better than a gigabit, so I wouldn't be able to utilize the bandwidth of the higher end stuff anyway.
As far as the quality of the cable...
I'll ask again just to be sure...
Got a new house and want to run network cables. Here are some details:
Coming from central location housing the server (bedroom)
Runs to two other bedrooms (2 runs each) and living room (4 runs)
Potential runs to IP Security Cameras (PoE) (undetermined number...
I am creating a new asp.net MVC 5 application. Authentication is handled by a third party using smart cards. Once a user is authenticated by the third party, I am sent the user's unique ID (inside the http header) which I match up against my database in order to find relevant information about...
Thanks for the idea. Write caching was already enabled though. I did check the box to eliminate Windows from flushing the buffer since the drive has its own power supply, and once I checked that box, the Asus AI Suite crashed.
I thought that was weird, but then realized that part of that AI...
I have two different 3TB USB 3.0 external drives (both Seagate 7200 RPM drives in the shells). I am trying to copy some data from one to the other (brand new). I have them both plugged into the USB 3.0 ports of my desktop, but I am getting horrible speeds.
If I copy some data from the first...
I second Handbrake. And yes, you will need to work around the encryption (if there is any) by using one of several programs (including AnyDVD HD as mentioned).
Here is an easy way to get an mkv (or any one of many other mainstream file formats would work too) blu ray compliant and ready to burn.
Download BD Rebuilder from jdobbs software (direct download here). It is freeware, and it will do it all for you. You will have to download some other...
Cinavia is a copy-protection scheme that is put on discs. It doesn't matter what method you use to rip a disc containing a cinavia protected audio track, any device that is equipped to detect the cinavia signal will cut the audio within 20 minutes.
DVDfab will allow you to create a BDMV-REC...
OK cool. I only chose VMware because that is the one I always heard of when I heard people speaking of VMs in passing. I am by no means partial to any of the software out there, so if one is better than another, I would certainly like to know.
About the VPN... Basically, I want to start my...
From what I have read, I need to delve into the world of virtual machines. I am needing to be able to VPN into my school, but at the same time be able to use my internet (and my home network) as usual. From what I understand, this can be accomplished by installing a virtual machine and using...
I checked back at Newegg to see if, by chance, the ram had come back in stock. I guess I checked at exactly the right time because I was able to grab a set. Checked again right after, and it is now back out of stock.
I wonder if the CORSAIR Builder Series CX500 V2 500W has the same issue with the whining. The 500w is $50 and has a $20 rebate with it too. It's not modular like matteos suggested, but I just happened across it, and thought I would ask about it.
Newegg reviewer stated that they were using...
Funny that I hadn't even considered the vibrations of the sub! That would certainly not be pretty!
I'm looking at my TV stand, and I may be able to make it work there if I either stack the computer on the DirecTV receiver, or vice versa. I'll have to measure to be sure. What do you think...
Hello. I have been wanting to build an HTPC for some time now, and I believe that I am about ready to move forward. If you could take a second to look over my prospective build and let me know if you see anything that you believe I should be aware of.
Case:
Fractal Design Core 1000 - $47

And to be honest, if the biggest software company in the world, entrusted with the most basic functioning of computing around the world, can't see this gigantic flaw in this simple authentication system, then they are the ones laughing. Because we just paid $14.99 too much.
I have my entire DVD collection backed up as movie only to single layer discs (which requires compression most of the time). On the rare occasion that someone wants to see some special feature or something, I'll break the original out and watch it, but other than that, the originals stay in...
I went to BestBuy to test drive some keyboards to see what I might like, and to my surprise, I saw that they had the Logitech Illuminated Keyboard on clearance for $47.99. I couldn't remember offhand what I had been seeing them go for online, but I didn't think it was this low. Looks like it...
The encoding is being done in anticipation of building a dedicated HTPC. For now, playback is being done on my standard rig (i5 2500k). TMT5 shows DTS-HD from a BluRay source, but not from an mkv. I read that this is a limitation of TMT5 which prompted me to try the other players.
I am...
I soon plan to jump into the HTPC arena, and in preparation for this transition, I have decided to start converting my BluRay collection for storage on my hard drive. My ultimate vision for this project is having a nice little XBMC frontend with my movie collection available at the click of a...
For whatever reasons, I have never been a fan of Sony, but I was looking for a media player to do a lot of what you are wanting to do. I grabbed a Sony SMP-N200 at a local Target store for $50 since the reviews I read online made me believe that it would suit my needs.
I can't talk about its...
I have no issues streaming 720p mkv files to my SMP-N200 via Serviio with transcoding off. I'm sure that I have streamed 1080p as well (just to see what it looked like), but I run mine wireless, and 1080p stutters at times, so I stick to 720p.
If you get your hosting plan set up and already have you domain linked to it and whatnot, you can edit locally, ftp to your server space, and test there. It would save you from having to do the whole LAMP thing locally, and you would eliminate the possibility of having the two systems...
Not bad! Thanks for taking the time. I wonder if it would be possible to make it look less like he was wearing sunglasses? This may have just been a bad idea in the first place. Hmm.
Thanks again.
I am working on creating a database system for a local non-profit wildlife rehabilitation organization. Just something simple to help them move out of the pen and paper era, and hopefully make things a bit easier for them. Anyway, I figured I would call the project WildlifeDB (unbelievably...
Heh. It was from a review from another tech site. Try this one... link. At any rate, it is a discontinued Razer brand Diamondback Plasma. It is the blue one.
My mouse is a Razer Diamondback Plasma, and my keyboard is a Microsoft Digital Media Keyboard 3000.
For what it's worth, I have yet to experience a single issue when coming out of a sleep state. Just from booting up (cold boots as well as restarts).
Lian Li Lancool PC-K62
Asus P8Z68-V
Intel Core i5-2500K
G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB DDR3 1600
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB
Sony Optiarc CD/DVD Burner
Antec High Current Gamer Series 620W
The problem is just random. The devices are getting power (at least some due to...
I just recently got this rig built, and on first boot, I didn't have any mouse in the BIOS. I started installing Windows 7, and I still didn't have any mouse. After a couple of restarts not fixing the issue, I decided to just unplug it and plug it back in while booted. That worked. I had...
After having all the parts sitting in my house for about a week, I finally got a chance to put this thing together. I have some last minute things to do on my old machine to get it ready for retirement, and then I will yank out its video card and one of its hard drives (to use as a scratch...
So... I just got all the components in for my new build including my shiny new P8Z68-V. Before I get started installing windows7 on this thing, I was wondering if there was anything I should set up, or change, or update, or whatnot. Kinda hoping that through all your trials and tribulations, I...
